ah, missed the part about wanting to use the index value too, so then yeah, those short and clear examples are good. btw, thanks for pointing out the enumerate() function... tis handy.
In Star Trek, they always call new functionality as 'subroutines', which leads me to think that the LCARS system was written in Perl (Perl 2000 Xtreme?). A scary thought indeed...
I like the valley because I like the weather. It's some of the most mildest weather you will find (I actually prefer Santa Cruz, where I intend on moving). After graduating in 97, I had a series of jobs at tech companies (not dotcom companies however) and left in mid 2000 to go back to school. Dang, what good timing! My parents support me (I'm 24) and I'm heading to grad school next year. With any luck, the economy wont be so shitty when I get my Masters.

I would prefer a hobbit hole. Nice and cozy, fireplaces, but plenty of natural light. Maybe staffed by underpants gnomes.
dunno about others, but that had a bad CRC error for me (OS X, using StuffIt Expander 7). The stream was fast and steady, wouldnt think that would cause any errors
Since Win95, Windows' GUI look has changed quite a bit, but the overall layout of it all is still as deeply flawed since Win95 (don't get me started on Win3.1)
The Start menu is still a giant UI mistake, the round-about way the interface on so many controls are layed out is terrible (any Control Panel, the IE settings window - gag) and so on and so forth.
I don't have the energy to point out all the flaws, because they are numerous, and there are so many designs out there that are so much better (OS X, BeOS)
I wish some MS engineers would actually try to get things changed to be layed out more cleanly/logically. But then, i guess MS engineers aren't paid to question the status quo.
I have a copy of BBEdit Lite, but there must be a huge discrepincy between it and the full version, because while it has great search fascilities, it doesn't even have syntax coloring, which I have grown to like since my days using CodeWarrior.
Project Builder has everything *I* need for coding. And whenever I do stuff at the command line, I tend to just use emacs. BBEdit Lite is only kept around as a quick(ish) text viewer. And I dont see myself forking over 180$ for a text editor anyway, when PB is free.
a) yes, I'm using ObjC and b) yes i know about PyObjC, but it seemed rather a hack to me, at least last time I checked it out. Tho it was still a lot better than the f'ugly Perl/ObjC/Cocoa bindings
evidently too many people are not getting that i was using examples, not that web form processing is the end-all and be-all of scripting, and GUI work for programming. Someone else made the good point that scripting could be defined as glueing components together.
The line between the two is so blurry that I used the scope of a project as my own definition, because larger projects tend to require more components that interact, and usually more creativity required (which makes programming an art, rather than just being a code/script monkey).
Again, i said it was my belief, so it's my subjective way of judging the two. YMMV.
I agree. I started using wxPython for a project I'm working on in OS X. It's great, and beats the poop out of Swing, but I decided that using the native (Cocoa) toolkit, while it may take longer, will give the program the spit-and-polish I desire from the app.
is that it stops being 'scripting' and starts being 'programming' based on the scope of the project. Processing a web form is scripting. Writing a GUI app (be it in Win32 or wxPython) is 'programming'.
Mike: And the drunk guy says "I can't help being an idiot, I'm Canadian!"
Crow: You're right! They're so pathetic, Mike!
Tom: *blows whistle* Enough! There's been too much Canada bashing for faaaar too long! I say no more!
Mike: Don't you mean "No more, eh?"
Crow: Good one, man! They are so stupid!
Tom: Stop it now! Instead let us offer our Northern brothers and sisters this song of tribute!
*Music starts*
Tom: Oh I wish I was baaaack in old Canada, a land which I never shall lampoon! How I pine for the ice covering Lake Manitoba, and the beauty that is Saaaaskatoon!
Mike: Oh I got one. Oh I wish I was stuck in the hills of Alberta, drinking beer with some big dumb guy trapping fuuuur! As he scraped and he chiseled all the moose dung off his boots I would learn that he's the Prime Ministeeeeer!
Tom: Oh stop that!
Crow: Oh I wish I was in the land that gave us Peter Jennings, Alanis Morisette, Mike Myers toooo! No I take that back I wouldn't go there even if you paid me! O Canada you are a place I must eschew.
Tom: Now this is not in the spirit that I intended!
Mike: Oh come on give in, I mean after all they gave us Ed the Sock, and Rush..
Crow: Yeah, what're you defending? They're such feebs.
Tom: Okay I'll tryyyyyy. Oh I wish I was blowing up Prince Edward Island, going on to bomb Ontarioooo haha, The destruction of Canada and all of its culture is by far my favourite scenarioooo.
Mike: Okay that's a little strong, you can back it down.
Tom: No you're right Mike, this is much more fun! Just where the hell does Canada get off sharing a border with countries far superior to iiiiit!?
Mike: Yikes!
Tom: WHY YOU LOUSY STINKIN' FRANCOPHONIC BACON LOVIN' BASTARDS! YOUR COUNTRY'S JUST A GIANT PIECE OF SHHHH-
Actually, i've had my setup using the grayscale rather than the colored one, as it is better for graphic design stuff where other colors on screen can throw you off. if you mouse over those three buttons, you see (x) (-) (+) which solves the coloring problem (which would also have been a problem for the colorblind out there)
In fact, you can set up your display to be totally grayscale, not just the widgets

I swear that looks like the kernel has four-dimensional dependancies there...

I had Rhapsody DR2 running on my 350 MHz x86 machine a long time ago. It was a trip to see the Mac interface on a PC. =]

oh, and I meant Aqua guidelines as a whole (like keeping the power user stuff just under the surface) not just skinning.
get the look right the first time
Sure it has a few flaws, but after trying different skins with OS X, i kept coming back to Aqua.
