beats the record. here is Saint Petersburg, Russia, it costs me $200 startup, and $39 a month for DSL and that's with a 300MB limit. get this: 8 cents per MB after 300. oh, and for shits and grins, there's no such thing as flat rate dialup, either.
hey, anyone wanna help me start up an ISP over here??
i just moved from California to Saint Petersburg, Russia. I was thinking that getting a sysadmin/programming job in linux would be cake here since typical Russian companies can't afford Microsoft licenses.
bzzt, wrong!
it turns out that most Russian companies don't pay for licenses anyway, so they all run MS products.
someone please tell me that Moscow is different...
i just moved to Saint Petersburg and was very curious about the wireless access here. what i've found is that cell phone use is widely supported, although it is all prepaid. my cell phone provider is also an ISP so i can access my cell phone from my laptop via infrared, which then accesses a GSM connection to my cell phone which dials my ISP and gets me online.
i can only connect at 9600 baud, which compeltely stinks, but then again it costs me only 8 cents a minute.
of course, saying anything bad about KDE at all will drop this post to -1, bit i feel that my voice must be heard.
mosfet claims that "Gnome 2 has taken the direction that "less-is-more" and that the configurability in Linux desktops, including Gnome 1.x, was clutter and confusing to the end-user."
first of all, Gnome2 is highly configurable, but just because i don't have a gazliion options to make changes pasted all over the desktop and right click menus doesn't mean it isn't possible.
for me, i love a subtle, clean and crisp looking desktop. Gnome2 comes right out of the box looking just like that. sure, there are a few options i go into the gconf editor and tweak, but that's just me.
there's nothing wrong with KDE. it fits the bill for some people. hey, some people are Christains, and that's great. but it's just not my thing. i don't see anything wrong with it.
and why does the KDE community seem like the whiney bunch? to give you an example, you won't see Havoc Pennington rebutting Mosfet's stuff. why? because Havoc Pennington doesn't need to, and he knows it.
perhaps KDE should close up their source and box it at CompUSA. remember what happened when Red Hat took KDE source, modified it a bit for their own use? the KDE kids went nuts! i saw crying and whining pasted all over the net about that one, didn't you? RedHat can (and does) change Gnome 1.x and Gnome 2 in their distros. does/would the Gnome team complain? they don't and will not. they are mature individuals that realize their code is open and anyone can make changes and bundle it in their software.
ok, enough ranting. i don't think this merited a mod point, but i don't think it loses one either.
the C-64 scene was incredible in the early to mid-eighties. i ran a BBS in 1985 in the Ventura County area of California, called The Probability Broach, stuipid name i know...
anyways, my point here is there was an amazing peice of BBS software then. i believe it was called C-NET (i had version 10.x or so). this software was written in BASIC and it was very easy to modify and add entire sections to.
there was also another piece of software for the C-64 called HAL or something. sheesh, does anyone remember?
it was amazing to think about all the phreakers back then, calling BBS's with stolen Sprint/MCI codes for avoiding long distance charges. i remember the phone company calling me because a number of phone phreaks used these codes for calling my BBS. i told her i didn't know who made these calls. the operator then told me that as a system operator, i should have a log of all incoming calls and user accounts. i was like, 'look lady, i'm 14 years old. what should i have again?' the phone company never called me again. heh.
to see all the windows weenies yell, 'Go Radeon, Go Radeon!'..and all the linux folks yelling, 'Go Nvidia, Go Nvidia!'
for me, i'm not a Tom's Hardware visiting, overclocking, power hungry cooling expert. i play the hell out of games, but i can't tell the difference between 60 FPS and 100 FPS.
so, my argument rests with driver availability. i know that if i buy an NVIDIA card, i can play games in both linux and windows with superb performance. if i buy a ATI card, looks like a windows only solution. i don't like being stuck in the corner, that's why i use linux in the first place...
i wonder how long it will take ATI to realize how much market share they are losing by not supplying either open or closed kernel module drivers for their cards under linux...
are you kidding? i've found the HUMVEE to be an extremely reliable vehicle! while stationed in northern Saudi Arabia during the whole Desert Shield/Storm thing, we would take these things out into the desert and make jumps.
wow, we could hit a jump doing about 80 and be airborne for 3-4 seconds!
be careful when jumping these things though, it's real easy to hit your head on the inside middle turret handle when coming down for landing.
we basically tried to drive these things into the ground, but the worst case scenario was a broken axle on a single HUMVEE.

if that's the case then they should make the email address optional

People, please use the right tool for the right job. period.

the most realistic portrayal i've even seen was in a movie called Anti Trust
lots of gnome screens with real shell commands. it also includes a quick cameo by Miguel De Icaza.
a must see for linux heads...
i don't have any statistics to prove, but i'm fairly certain that there was an increase in Penium sales when the original Quake was released.
either Quake didn't play on a 486 or it was slow, i don't remember...
maybe you didn't read the article.
he was using a linux box running debian with kde for his desktop.
debian + kde + (insert anything here) = a news story sure to make it on slashdot.

Another interesting fact I remember back in the day was being able to type faster than the 300 baud modems could send.
i think you're getting reading and writing mixed up.
you probably meant to say that you remember reading faster than 300 baud
is AquaNet (unscented)..

asre you kidding me? unless your lawyer costs more than their group of lawyers, you don't have a chance of winning your case.
our (US) justice system isn't about being fair, it's about who has the money. just ask OJ
Here, download these RPMS from mozilla, and you'll be a happy camper.
oh my god, i'm crying with laughter!

could this perhaps explain the strange pattern striping in the sky i see so often in the california mountains?
yea, but maybe your TV is at fault. remember, these films have been reformatted to fit YOUR tv, not mine. duh
(yes, it's funny, laugh)
READ MY PARENT
where is my mod points when i need them the most? the parent of this post is the most imformative post of this discussion.
are you sure about that?
i thought Setec Astronomy was an anagram for Cootys Rat Semen
that's funny, i've heard that they do very well
in SOVIET RUSSIA,

oh wait..
if it were up to me, Taiwan's entire network should be blackholed.
the network in Taiwan is responsible for much of the spam we see today. it's also one of the hottest spots for many worms to replicate themselves.
what does a tilted orbit have to do with a spacecraft docking, loading up on fuel, then undocking??
