I seem to remember a few years ago when a company had a 3-processor graphics board. They just took their regular GPU, and made each one just do one color of RGB... not sure how good it worked, but since nobody has done it since, I'm guessing making better single-GPU boards has been determined to be better in the long run.
I would expect NYC has the same thing, perhaps as simply as "we'll provide security services for your filming for free, you show NYC accurately".
But even then, it doesn't change how this private company can sue. If the agreement is with NYC (meaning the city government) than the city may have issues, but this private party isn't part of the agreement.
Which is rather strange, don't you agree? Essentially, these researchers have shown that there are "adult" stem-cells that behave identical to embryonic stem-cells. If the lawmakers would think logically, they'd apply the same regulations to research with "adult" stem-cells.
Except you don't have to kill anyone to get adult stem cells...
No, all other calculators are backwards, RPN is the best. It took me all of half an hour to get used to it, and I still love and use my HP (and can't use a regular calc. easily)
You know, it's fine to call Micro$oft Micro$oft on places like/. that are meant to be for 'nerds.' But when sending letters to companies, and when you want to be taken seriously, you should call them Microsoft.
Actually, I think that one of the largest segments of CD-buyers are college students. Almost every student's room I've seen has a computer with winamp or musicmatch jukebox or whatever running on it. Ripping CDs to MP3s, making your own CDs, etc are _all_ very common things on any college campus, even with the people who are always asking me to fix their computers:-) (in fact, CD ripping and burning is the one thing that everybody can do by themselves)
You have that backwards. Mass stays the same with gravity. Weight, is the force of gravity on the mass of our bodies. Something massing (is that a real word?) 1 gram here would be 1 gram anywhere in the universe. It may, however, weigh differently different places.
The pound is a measure of force, the english system for mass is the slug.
And Intel made the P4 to do less things per clock cycle, and to be scaleable to higher speeds. So the fact that a 1.4Mhz P4 is slower than a 1.4Mhz AMD (and slower than a 1.4Mhz P3) is how it was designed (because they knew they could ramp it up to much higher speads than the AMD part)
ps does anyone else wonder what will happen when we get a Pentium 6 (or VI, or whatever). Because the P6 was shorthand for the PentiumPro, so a P6 is crap compared to a P4...
And for people that feel they "shouldn't be bothered" with pr0n or various disgusting content sites - here's a clue: "Don't go back there if you didn't like what you've seen there!"
What about people battling an addiction to porn. Yes, there is such a thing. Why do so many porn places hide the fact that they're porn and then spring it out on you (like www.yellowpages.com or www.yahooo.com (note: an ex-coworker was surprised by both of these at some point working here, it was interesting).
If porn didn't hide itself, and the sites were honest (like if all porn sites were www.blahsexygoats.xxx) then people wouldn't complain.
Eventually, you'll have things like "AT&T would like you to get 3 months of free cable modem service, but only if you go see the great movie 'Plotless'!"
I'll go see a stupid movie once every 3 months in exchange for free cable modem service. (let's see, $7.50 movie, that means.... $2.50/month cable internet... Win!)
a government agency, who primary concern is nation al security (supposedly only outside of American soil)
Ummm... as far as I remember, the CIA cannot do anything domesticaly, but the NSA can do whatever the hell they want. Domestic or International espionage is right up their ally.
The only reason the NSA and the CIA didn't create carnivore, is because the FBI beat them to it.
Of course, the CIA can't officially do something like carnivore, because they are legally not allowed to do internal stuff. Basically one could say that international and domestic espionage is split between the CIA and FBI (in that order).
As far as the NSA goes, they can do whatever they want, because even if it was against their charter, their charter is classified, so we'd never know.
Just state that the Bavarian Order of the Illuminati no longer exists and that the US government is actually controlled by Zionists and Masons.
No, no, no, it's all a cover! The Bavarian Illuminati are simply those that are the true head of the Masons, I mean, duh.
The standard for measuring relative worth in this context is something like rarity of skills...or ease of replacing those skills.
Yes, but there are also things like the importance of the job. Pro Sports players have skills that are very difficult to replace, so do they actually deserve as much money as they get? (yes, yes, I know, tripe, but it makes a point. Teachers are more important to society, yet make less.)
They do have abreviated days and summer vacations (I don't deny that teaching a class is hard but so are most jobs)
They may have abreviated days, but then they go home and spend hours upon hours grading papers. They may have long summer vacations, but they often spend them catching up on new stuff they don't get to learn while working. Or they may teach summer school, depending.
I have friends teaching or preparing to teach everything from Elementary to College, and it's a very difficult job, one that deserves more money than they are getting now (especially to pay off all of those student loans).
My goodness, my friends in Elementary Education here in college spend a _lot_ more time and are under a _lot_ more stress than I am (and I feel more stress now than back when I was a physics major). They work hard before they start teaching, and they work hard once they get into the work force. Yes, they do it because they love to teach, and they know what they are getting into when they start, but that doesn't mean that society can't give them more support.
Okay, in order for God to have created the earth 6000 years old (or 11,000 or whatever) and then make the world seem much older, then he would have had to think about it. But God is pure act, with no potentiality (see St. Thomsas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, I,14,2) If God thinks about it, it exists.
As St. Augustine "One does not read in the Gospel that the Lord said: 'I will send you the Paraclete who will teach you about the course of the sun and moon.' For he willed to make them Christians, not mathematicians."
By the way, I'm not a creationist or an evolutionist, I'm a "I don't care"ist:-) (Besides, doesn't evolution violate the 3rd law of thermodynamics?)
Ah... but you're forgetting that every 3rd grader knows about Pi, so the cops are always on the lookout for that guy. It's that e guy that sneaks up on you. He does all the same stuff as Pi, but is much more insidious. For example, if you had Pi(x) and integrated it, you'd get something weird, but e(x), you still get e(x). You can't get rid of him!
It's akin to not only delivering a news story on a serial thief who's robbed many homes, but giving full and agonizing details on how he broke in to the general public
I always wonder about that when watching various shows on the Discovery Channel or TLC about real-life crimes, usually murders. I mean, after watching those shows for a while one night, I thought "you know, if someone wanted to commit a murder, they could just watch these for all the 'how not to do it's...'"
Word and emacs are 2 different things. Word is a wordprocessor, emacs is a text editor. Comparing the 2 is insane. Besides, (since you brought it up) vi is better than emacs (IMHO, no flame wars please, they are at least comparable), and WordPerfect is better than Word (IMNHATO -in my not humble at all opinion, I work with both, and Word is the bane of my existence)

If the poster would actually read the article, they'd see that the company Logicon sold the Oracle software to the state, not Oracle themselves.

it would be nice to see on of microsofts over-marketed products fail...
See: Microsoft Bob
Well, I'm going to work for the best non-profit out there... I'm going to be a stay-at-home dad.
Except you don't have to kill anyone to get adult stem cells...

I much prefer WASP bashing myself, it's the only group it's PC to bash after all...

Those 2 sites used to be porn, maybe they aren't now (it's been a few years, and I have no desire to double check that particular fact).

Or that he'd run a website that has registration to use certain features...
Ahhh... but this is slashdot, I can blame anything and everything on Microsoft! They caused the Franco-Prussian War!
