I can't say whether or not AT&T unlocks phones, I'll take your word for it. But when Alltel was bought out by Verizon, FTC blocked it in my area as anti-competitive (Southern NM). AT&T bought them out here. I go to switch my account to Verizon, and they won't let me use my old CDMA phone because it has an Alltel label. They won't reflash it. So I had to buy new phones, which of course then had to be reprogrammed with our address books. And no, they don't transfer phone books between models, which Alltel would do.

Unless all carriers unlock phones that are compatible, it doesn't do much good.

My worst possible case is I can pick up my package from the UPS depot at the nearest town 20 miles away. I couldn't even get FedEx to call me when their driver was in that town for me to pick it up.

I could have driven to Phoenix (500 miles one-way), gotten the laptop repaired, and driven back and saved both time and money.

Never again. Now whenever I order anything, I ask them what carrier they use and tell them to use UPS or USPS.

Yes, I am old school. The first languages that I learned were Basic, Cobol, RPG, Fortran, followed by Pascal, C, C++, and some assembler. Then lots more. And frankly, I'm bored. Gee, now we have a language that is 100% compatible with Java! If it's so compatible, how is it different? What are the substantial advantages that it offers that I should bother learning it? And how is learning yet another obscure language going to enhance my employability? I saw one of my old teachers many years ago, and she told me that they no longer taught programming theory as a standalone class. Apparently people want to learn a programming language rather than learning how to program.

Programming theory ignorance and lack of flexibility makes me a sad panda.

The wages that I paid to the people in X are no longer going in to the local economy of X, it's going in to Y. Same thing with off-shoring. Aside from the wages lost to India, we no longer have the money going in to the local economic base in the form of sales tax, which is a major revenue source for local government.

Same issue exists with mail-order pharmaceuticals. Our drug plan wants us to switch to 90 day supplies "to save money", but to do so means that the money goes to another state, not our local economy. Walgreens might be a national corporation, but my money is helping people to keep local jobs, so I'll keep picking up my meds on a monthly basis.

If you want to see something scary, go see the movie Waiting For Superman. Our education system is wrecked, but they don't mention that there's a tidal wave just over the horizon: India's top 1% of college graduates are more numerous than the entire US college graduate class. If India tried, they would be an all but unstoppable economic power.

I think the system did a disconnect and dial-back once they connected, but I don't remember as that wasn't my area. After they were done, the operator turned off the switch.

When I voted for the first time in a Presidential election, it was for Reagan. At that time I was probably very conservative. And I deeply regret that. I would like less government, a more fiscally conservative government, but at the same time I think there needs to be a safety belt for people who are having problems. There are elements of both liberal and conservative points that I care for, but because of the actions of both major political parties here in the United States, I refuse to be affiliated with either of them.

I freely admit I have not yet read TFA. I suspect the study doesn't account for a person maturing and revising their political opinions as they mature and learn more things and more about life.

The only hardware problem that I've had was when I had an authorized service center install a new HD: that drive was bad, and the one they replaced it with also failed. Very fun time, fortunately I maintain good backups. When they replaced the second bad drive, I made sure it was a different brand.

He's running 7 now, and I can't remote to him. I probably could with something like GoToMyPC, but I'd rather spend $100 one time than $30 a month on their stuff. I tried to get him to switch to a Mac when he bought his latest POS, but he was daunted by the price. I guess if I ever get another high-paying job I'll just buy one for him.

My only other use for Windows is downloading programs from my Tivo, as I haven't bothered buying Nero Pro, or whatever the program is that they want you to buy to be able to download them to a Mac. I've been extremely happy with the quality of the hardware and software, the only time I've reinstalled the OS has been when I upgraded the hard drive and that drive failed (as did its replacement, it made for a fun couple of months when you're 500 miles from the store in the middle of the biggest winter in 20 years). Apple's new OS versions have been totally painless, and their backups are wonderful.

At work, they're probably 90%+ XP (100% MS and Dell), but new computers are coming in with 7 and they're having lots of problems with drivers. Fortunately I telecommute, so I don't have to hear about most of it.
