a year or so ago there was a huge lawsuit settled where the panel makers admitted to colluding to keeping prices high. TV makers liked this since they could hike the price of TV sets for higher margins. now with prices falling everyone is looking for ways to sell a high end model with something to make people pay a premium to keep the margins high. the 42" EEFL 120Hz TV I just bought for $650 didn't give a lot of profits to Panasonic
i've watched 3d shows on TV for almost 30 years as they played every so often. wearing the glasses is PITA and adding 3D is not something i'm going to pay the extra $300 or so for.
LED TV's are cool mostly for the nice CPU's inside them. i've seen HD shows on them and they look almost as good as seeing something with your own eyes. much better than watching HD on the original HD sets from years ago. but the real value is in internet access. netflix and youtube on TV's is nice. and with Google TV promising to organize all the video on the internet it will make it a lot easier to view shows straight from the network's website rather than pay for DVR. and it makes it so much easier to watch porn on your TV with flash built in. there is a return on investment in buying a TV with Google TV in it. people aren't stupid. they look to buy stuff to save money in the long run, not some gee whiz tech being hyped as the next cool thing
because if they were free then spammers would come in and clog up the data channel with constant texting. since you have to pay for incomming texts it's illegal to spam you via cell
i did a 1 year contracting stint at a US Army Corps of Engineers office 10 years ago. the DC was less than 10 servers in a closet for 140 people. the local offices had more people and more servers. in a few cases the local IT people refused to go with the mandated domain plan and kept separate domains. word was that the managers couldn't make them do it either. this was back in the NT4 days. with Windows 2003 and 2008 it's a lot easier to consolidate the domains and data centers but in the end they will have to force the local IT people to give up passwords so they can consolidate things. think the idiot from SF type problems

Google currently has some good margins and takes in a lot of cash. if they were to develop their own visual studio clone for android development it would cost a lot of money that they would have to eat in lower margins and lower stock price. or charge money for the kit making the cost of entry a lot higher than it is now. kind of like apple requiring the purchase of a Mac to develop for the iPhone
Google is famous for building a piece of cool software to version.8 or so and then releasing it under open source and letting everyone else finish the work. they build some cool software for internal use but for all their consumer products they expect everyeone else to finisht the work or let a cool product like google reader languish
i've worked in a company where every 6 months everyone was assigned a randomly created password that met all the complexity rules. of course it was impossible to remember since most people had 2-3 passwords for the domain and an application they used. people just wrote it down and had the paper with them all the time.

the android OS code is free to use, but to put google apps on a phone you have to pay $15 to google. or something close to that. in return google shares advertising revenue from the handsets you license. apparently they can keep track or revenue for each android device.
PC and Mac apps worked on any PC and Mac as long as the hardware met the requirements. Dell/HP didn't do too much customization of the OS except for including drivers and wallpaper/BIOS for branding
with android the manufacturer first makes a deal with a carrier and then customizes the OS for that phone based on the carrier's wishes. AT&T is already locking their android phones out of some app stores. i bet in the future we'll see android phones won't run apps just because it's from a store the carrier doesn't approve of

This is back in the days when $150 per MEGABYTE of RAM was a killer deal. MS freed geeks from the tyranny of overpriced IBM and Sun hardware. in a few years Windows became boring and something you have to buy.

i don't have anything against copyrights but most of the pirated content is put on the internet by insiders. i know someone that gives me movies a few weeks prior to DVD release that are from the original masters. he used to get movies a few days after theater release that were originals as well. music albums pop up on bit torrent weeks prior to street date. same thing in this case, it's not like kiddie ninja's snuck in and stole the episodes. someone who works for telecino put them up on youtube.
i'm waiting for a case where discovery uncovers emails that the media companies did this as PR and publicity for some new release. it would probably kill most of the lawsuits

i predict google TV will be integrated into most TV's in the next 3-5 years which means every TV will soon ship with Flash
