A tablet/handheld is a much better babysitter than books. They offer instant gratification, while books require a lot of work, not inline with today's value system. There are studies on their way to prove how much more educational tablets/handhelds are vs books. They are less of a health risk, as opposed to the eye strain suffered from reading. Much nicer on trees, too.
I can buy 2 (two) Sony Vaios with better specs and 1920x1080 display for the price of the high res MacBook Pro. Faster processor, much better (and full) keyboard, better battery life, superior finish (my previous 2 year old vaio still looks brand new, having been used every day), and still a really nice IPS screen. The extra 20% of resolution is just not worth it.
I can than take the extra $1000+ and pay for my daughter's violin classes for a year. I would be a total dick stealing that money from her, just to have a couple more pixels.
Nothing wrong with objective-c. But Apple's toolchain and developer tools suck. If you don't believe me, take any open source application and try to build it with xcode and Apple's frameworks.
This little piggy went to the market: Retina 3.5 - Create all xibs, and images at x2. Added bonus here is that all coordinates have to be divided by 2.
This little piggy stayed at home: Low res 3.5 - All images from above scaled to 50%. This can be done with a script, but then everythong has to be checked on a low res 3.5 screen to make sure that text and art still looks good. Fix ones that are not.
This little piggy had roast beef: Retina 4 - aka iPhone5. This screen is larger, so if pre iOS6.0 has to be supported (currently still about 40% of the market), a separate xib has to be made. Most likely some x2 art from above will look funny, or backgrounds need extending, so take care of that, too.
This little piggy had none: iPad retina - create xibs and x2 images. This is a much larger screen, so most likely this is a completely new setup.
And this little piggy went... wee wee wee all the way home: before new iPad - this uses the same xibs as above, art again rescaled to half size with a script. Then all art checked on device, and ones that look funny (like text for example) fixed.
So that's wee wee wee all the way home... setups with wee wee wee lots of fun (not). Which is what you said and what I said. And it's a LOT of freaking work.
You have to support 2 (or 3) different phone screens and 2 tablet screens. And interface builder sucks balls. And just hope you won't have to localize.
Is it a phone? Does it have front facing camera? What video resolutions are supported? Can it even record video? Does it have gyroscope? Accelerometer? GPS?... the list goes on.
On top of it, xcode 4.x sucks. And crashes. It's an embarrassment.
On the other hand, Visual Studio is the best development environment, hands down. So you know what? M$ might be onto something here.
+1. Another factor is weight. 10" tablets are too heavy to hold, so they are either laid flat (which is a pin in the neck), or propped up (can't type). The 7" factor is much lighter, and one can even type with two thumbs while holding it.
Shouldn't we be climbing again in the anticipation of the ipad mini release? Or shouldn't the ipad mini release, a month from iphone 5 release at least hold the value?
The stock value was around $660 for about a month before the iphone5 release. The $700+ craziness started after the release, then retracted to $630. So I thought the hype was 700, not 660.
"""I am not sure what you think happened with maps."""
You are not serious, right? This was so big, Tim Cook even had to come out to apologize. And you are saying that users are better off when they have to buy something that they had yesterday? Superior? Show me one map alternative that tells me the hours of the local violin repair shop, how long it will take me to get there with current traffic conditions and also gives me user reviews?
"""Apple sold only 5 million phones instead of 10 in a saturated market. Dreadful,"""
I don't know if your numbers are correct, but 50% off target sounds like a pretty big deal to me. Just google AAPL.
"""but iPhone 5 traffic is reported to exceed the Samsung galaxy 3, which means guess who is actually using their pohone?"""
You lost me here. Not sure how data usage has anything to do with your argument. Or how you came up with this assessment. But just to play along, maybe iphone users are streaming their movies, while S3 users play them from their micro SD card.
Maybe you are just jealous, like me of the wife's new phone. But I got good news: just like my contract, yours will end, too, and we can both get a nicer toy. Then we won't be morose like these people.
My wife just swapped her phone for a Samsung Galaxy S3. In a long time (probably since the iPhone1) I'm jealous and want one, too. The S3 looks fantastic and works great. The interface is awesome, there's no need to root it like with older Android phones.
The patent trolling from Apple also made Google/Samsung to invent. One example is screen unlock. On the S3 you can swipe the screen anywhere and even launch apps (like email or camera) directly from the unlock screen. Better user experience with more functionality.
In the meantime Apple had to do some catching up and they made the screen larger on the iPhone5. But instead of making the screen larger in both directions, they opted to change the aspect ratio, so now ios developers have to support yet another screen layout (at least pre-iphone5, iphone5 and ipad for a universal app). On the other hand, Android was designed from the beginning to support multiple aspect ratios, so one layout can handle it all (and no, this is not a cause of fragmentation, it's a solution to it).
Then Apple tried to stick it to Google with dropping maps. We all know how that turned out.
The solution is simple: Apple should stop with the patent trolling. It is biting them in the rear. Android is here to stay. They should go back to inventing and competing, otherwise they will be out-invented and out-competed. I know they are making money hand over fist, but just take a look at their stock price since iphone5 release.
Some of the most profitable smartphones in the industry have a removable battery and microSD expansion slot. I think many people care about these features outside of Slashdot.
You can hook up an iPod to my Honda, but it also takes USB drives, anything over Bluetooth and for last resort there is the aux port. My previous Honda did the same. So iPod only, is far from the truth.

Oh, wait...
And that extra 15% drives states, like California for example, off the cliff. When eventually mayhem hits, what will you do with the extra 15%?
I'd rather take a device with 13gb free space and a memory card slot, rather than one with 28gb free and no way to expand.
Your courage and determination is inspiring. Wish you the best.
Sorry, but no can do.

[Apple] Steve's gone. Let's turn the page. We'll stop being dicks, no more lawsuits.
[Google] Sounds good. We'll give you maps with turn-by-turn navigation.
Nothing wrong with objective-c. But Apple's toolchain and developer tools suck. If you don't believe me, take any open source application and try to build it with xcode and Apple's frameworks.
Ok, so let's take a look.

Nice.
Posted from my MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8.2.
Enough of this "copying" BS.
All companies "copy". Steve jobs built Apple on taking other companies' designs and tweaking them. So how's this less acceptable?
I don't see how what you said differs from what I said. Just because you put half of the work behind a just, doesn't nullify it.
If you have done it before, you must know it's not just running your images through a 50% scale. Unless you don't care what the output looks like.
iOS is not any better, either.
... the list goes on.

Clicks? They got you, didn't they?

Enough of the who copies whom stuff already.
They all copy. Here's a good read for you: The Tweaker.
+1. I have no idea who has $299 for an mp3 player. Maybe Apple is trying to kill off the iPod Touch line.
Thanks so much for these suggestions. I've never heard about edubuntu before. I put it on an old laptop and my 3 and 5 year olds are loving it.
My $9 USB drive works perfectly in the car. I don't see any limitations. Other than it doesn't have the apple logo or $299 price tag.
Sure, I got that. But I have two questions:
Shouldn't we be climbing again in the anticipation of the ipad mini release? Or shouldn't the ipad mini release, a month from iphone 5 release at least hold the value?

I think this is a good move. Instead of locking everyone into a single store, google can keep users free and safe.
If only microsoft would've done the same two decades ago.
