But you are somewhat right, as I didn't say you can install programs that are signed with an apple certificate.

So my complete statement should've been that you cannot install any program that's not downloaded from the app store or not signed by an apple certificate unless you change the security settings.

But apple is counting on most users not being able to figure that out, so they just go and buy from the app store, so they profit 30%. And they are probably right, as I had to help a mac user today who deleted her iphoto, couldn't reinstall it, nor did she know that you can right click (secondary click) on a macbook pro. You think she could've figured out how to change the security settings?

One way or another, what apple is doing is plain evil and they are chipping away at users' freedom in order to make more $$$.

Thanks for calling me a hipster, I take it as a compliment.

While python2 and python3 might have been intended to be installed alongside, that just didn't work out and created a huge mess. By the time your script would know that it's been loaded with the wrong version of python (as for a script that starts with #!/usr/bin/env python it's not possible to know what it will get), it's too late, because python crashed it for syntax errors.

Python is an interpreted language. There's no reason why compatibility had to be broken. For example, print is now a function. It would've been very easy to support the old style. Ranges, classes, exec, same thing.

If the project owners were not interested in creating a compatibility layer to smooth the transition, they should've called it something else. Like cobra. Or whatever.

And thinking like this is why we are still in a transition period, after four years:

"""The only ones that are bothered by all of this are those who want the entire software and language development world to fit into their neat and tidy little idea of how everything should work. If it really bugs you that much, switch to Perl."""

And are you saying that python3 is now perfect? No more cruft that has to be fixed later? No more space for improvement? And if there is, will we need another decade of transitioning when that's fixed, probably even before this transition period ends?

While I like some of the changes in python3, breaking compatibility with python2 was a huge fail.

From python3 release notes (dated December 3rd, 2008):

'''Python 3.0 (a.k.a. "Python 3000" or "Py3k") is a new version of the language that is incompatible with the 2.x line of releases. The language is mostly the same, but many details, especially how built-in objects like dictionaries and strings work, have changed considerably, and a lot of deprecated features have finally been removed. Also, the standard library has been reorganized in a few prominent places.'''

This was four (4) years ago. Major linux distributions are still on python2. Many python2 packages are still hard to come by for python3. Popular libraries (for example opencv) still link to python2. Even google searches for python docs go to python2.

Python 2.7.3 is the new IE6.

I've recently upgraded to mountain lion, and was surprised how much OSX is starting to look like iOS. From the launcher, to mouse wheel scroll direction, scrollbars, mail or the fact that by default you are not allowed to install programs that don't come from the app store (I know, you can change much of this, I've spent a day customizing myself).

But all that aside, MS wants Windows on ARM.It's not possible to run executables compiled for x86 or x64 on ARM. So there has to be a separation, with Apple you also have the mac and ios app stores.

WinRT and Win8 will probably satisfy needs of different user groups. But the fact that they look and work the same might be a benefit. And what could have MS done to make a better distinction? Come up with a whole new name? Like Windows 8 vs Doors 8?
