"One area I kept looking for was hard-coded limits on robotic behavior. These robots have neither the First, nor the Second, nor the Third Laws of Robotics"
Wow, different authors had different ideas about fictional things. Is that allowed?
You know, that's probably not Microsoft's core market. And even so, most software companies offer educational discounts. A HS kid can probably get VC++ through a local college for $5... At least in this area they can.
Yes, the tech job market is bad. Relativly bad. Gone are the "I KNOW WHAT HTML IS SO I'M A SMARTY MAN" workers.
If you're competent and can play nicely with others you'll have no problems finding a job. At least that's the situation in the midwest. Hell, I just left my job for a 6 digit salary in an area where the annual average is $21k and *I'm* barely competent... =)
Jamie's points are worthwhile. Educate your child as to what's appropriate and what's not. Let them know the internet is a lot like the real world is many ways.
This is explains why 95% of the disturblingly thin women I see walking about downtown are always yammering away on cell phones about the most mindless topics. They've run out of things to talk about, right?
There's an entire group of ".com" companies out there that have VC funding and the potential for huge IPO's. Trust me. We're coming... We're just laying low until the time is right.
"Oh? You have a real business plan that doesn't involve shipping 40lb bags of dog food or Linux servers no one ever wanted?"
Another problem a magazine (I believe it was Discover) brought up recently was the personality factor. Can any group of people stand living with each other in a "bus" for that length of time? Think back to some longer road trips you've taken..
This would really suck if certain monitors would only work with certain computers from companies that have licensed their technology. Do I need to start building my own monitors as well as computers now? =)
Actually, I doubt that's the intent of this document. However, it always pays to be on guard, eh?
Most schools sell lists of their student's contact information. Remember how everyone at the school would get a credit card offer in the mail on the same day? I didn't get mad until I found out our info was being sold to telemarketers.
It really wouldn't surprise me if schools have extended this practice to alumni. Especially given the fact alumni tend to have more money that college students, are and therefore more valuable to the marketers.
No one's paying attention to MS anti-linux fud? Wrong. There's still a *WHOLE* lot of people out there in positions with purchasing power who are. Granted, not as many as there once were, but they're still out there.
We in the trenches are unaffected by marketing BS because we know what the right tools for the right jobs are. Java, MS stuff, C, etc... We know.
Also, I don't think this will be affecting MSFT's price any time soon. Please note, I didn't say "ever". I do agree, however, that the whole XP licensing issue does not bode well. I doubt there will be an en masse migration to Linux as XP is intended as a desktop OS, but I think the upgrade pipeline will slow. As anyone who has spent time in IT land knows, a surprising amount of hardware gets replaced quite often in most businesses. =)
Now what I don't know is if the stupidity of the XP licensing is going to carry over to Win2002 (their next server OS). If it does, that's when the real pain for MS will begin.

And you're being forced to use them how?
Of course, I missed the ealier post from someone on the same plane of reality as I am... Feh. Someone needs his beauty sleep.
"Astronomers expect it to reach its peak Wednesday around 3 a.m. EDT"
Don't know about you, but in the midwestern USA that was just about 24 hours ago. Little late on the draw there, Tex..

Red Hat is profitible. Do your research.

I doubt it. People really arn't getting any brighter or gullible.
Only an article on /. could go from the RIAA to Perl within 3 sentences of each other.

why don't LCD manufacturers make lower-cost Monochrome LCD screens available for those who don't need to work in full-color glory
A company's goal is to make money. Mass producing something they may sell 5 of is not a good way to achieve that goal.
You mean I can be 1337 and condecending anytime and anywhere I want?
