I think that Atlantis is in need of a new Zero Point Module before it can be used for any rescue missions.
Yes, and hopefully they can get away before the wraith find them and suck their life-force.
Yes it's a crappy show. But in a likable way. It's far - far better TV than what we had when I was growing up in the '70s. And for an evening of popcorn sc-fi with Battlestar Galactica (which is outstanding by any measure) it's entirely palatable.
Just be sure you watch Battlestar last, so the stargate suckitude won't show as much.
The Linux community politely asks the Unified EFI Forum to not add DRM into EFI....
Dear Linux community;
DRM is the reason why Unified EFI was formed, otherwise we could stick with a known technology that works reasonably well and not spend heaps of cash to lockdown computers.
I know that you Linux guys never need to reboot, but many others spend significant amount time doing so. We will use this fact to force this technology adoption by the unwashed masses. We need to start collecting rental fees on everything sent to your computer, you know.
Love,
Your corporate pimp-daddy
P.S. Embrace us and don't fight us. It will be easier that way.
Also, they (and their cohorts) have promised to stop payola numerous times in the past only to find another way to pass the money under the table.
Also, don't forget the other four titans Universal, EMI and Warner are conspicuosly absent from this article.
And I find it interesting that the last sentence says that the 10 million is "earmarked for not-for profits" which must be code-speak for "this is a tax write off"
Nerds won't have to buy new PCs. People in the mainstream will have to throw their PCs away as they would rather upgrade than spend money on virus removal.
Also, expect some sort of "super-virus" to force everyone to upgrade to the next version of windows. The purpose behind this is to make sure that everyone has DRM enabled(i.e. crippled) computers.
It should be interesting to see what they come up with. Being designed by a committee led by a company that really doesn't innovate, whatever it is will be mediocre at best.
Also, they forget one thing. Listening to music is an entirely different experience than watching a movie. Then consider the fact that cable boxes already deliver movies "on demand", and there are DVD players that can fit in your pocket.
So that leaves the question of what product they can deliver that consumers would want to own (or probably rent)?
With multiple layers of clunky DRM and what is sure to be expensive pricing for content (having to pay royalties to all the backers is not going to be cheap) I have a hard time seeing what kind of video ipod/set top box they can think up.
I hope they drop a huge chunk of change on it. It will then either be mind blowing wonderful or a piece of crap that nobody wants to buy. If its the latter, maybe it could serve as a lesson, but then you would think that they would learned from divx.
Also, hi-def by itself won't be enough to make it successful.
I think that the user that started this troll was OSM, or open source man. Sometimes he was troll, other times he wasn't. Compared with todays trolls he really wasn't. If not him, one of his aquaintances for sure.
He wrote a couple of very funny essays, some a little off color and R rated, but nowhere near the level of trolling that you see with the gnaa ilk.
Anyway, he started the whole "petrified" bit that was added on to the "hot grits".
It became such a large meme that I think slashcode was modified so anononymous posters could not make Natalie Portman-hot grits and petrified posts.
For me, I lost interest in Ms. Portman when I saw that picture of her scratching her butt while on the cell phone. Truly iconic. Does anybody have a link to this?

Freedom of Speech" standards vary wildly from country to country
The examples you cite really have no compare to China's widespread censorship that can lead to a bullet in the head, or at the least prison.
Beyond that, the censoring of speech is often done with the purpose of hiding the truth, which in itself ethically troubling, regardless of the technology used in expressing it.
Standards vary, but using the notion of varying standards to justify China's repressive government is ludicrous.
If you think they should act otherwise, then you should get your government to make rules about that banning the companies from bending to Chinese will
I agree with you. I think that the US Government should cancel all contracts with companies that sponser/sell technology that censors speech, esp. that about democracy.
Let them (aka Cisco/Microsoft) eat those "freedom fries".
You either appreciate me with some donuts or trinkets or I 0WN3R your ass.

I think that there are antitrust issues with opening the platform up - i.e. forcing people to publish content through sony.

The massive groan of thousands of couches under the collective weight of their potatoes as this device reaches a release date.
I suggest removing all copyrights on songs/artists that benefited from the payola crime
This implies that there is a congress that represents the public interests when it comes to copyright law.
This, as you know (or should know), simply is not the case.
Also, they (and their cohorts) have promised to stop payola numerous times in the past only to find another way to pass the money under the table.

They can call it the Red Mini Star.
Yes, and if you don't like the gui/OS you are sent away for "re-education".
They showed that thing just once, but it really has stuck in my mind too.
:-D
Every once in a while I see or think of something really inherently stupid and I think of "Bad Idea Jeans"
Yes, it supports all those platforms. I'm glad that UC made a stand like this.
Frankly I'm tired of the DRM crack mentality of the RIAA.
Also, the fact that Linux is supported is nice. I don't think you will see RIAA music on linux because it's a "hackers" platform.

I want to wake up this morning with 50 hot grits replies to this comment
Natalie apparently has some troubling hot grits here.
This petrified me and I have since lost interest.

Isn't that what spyware/adware uses??
Lets hope that IE7s new features (that are similar to the ones FF always had, tabs, search box, etc), dont take away market share from FF.
Actually a new IE "feature" usually means a "new hole to exploit".
So I am optimistic that FF will be able to continue to gain market share.
now if they could just lower the price on ink cartridges. 45 bucks to refill my ink is a bit steep
RTFA. They are coming out with a lowend printer that will have black and color cartridges at $15 and $18, with the printer costing $50.

Once again, I don't think Internet access is a Basic Human Right, so I don't see any ethical issues here.
It's not internet access that's being censored, but speech. Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right, at least according to the UN.
That's like saying there is no ethical issues with smashing printing presses, as owning a printing press is not a Basic Human Right.
Same principle, newer technology.

I think that the author JK Rowlings would beg to differ with you.
Should I study Data Warehousing or E-Commerce?
You should learn how to provide vertically integrated e-commerce solutions providing dynamic interaction to customers in synergistic markets.
Knowing how to work a sock puppet also helps.
A bot taking another IT related job! Where will it end?
With the Cylons.
IT industry needs new languages, including low-level and compiled ones.
Yes, that's why there are thousands of computer languages with a dozen more each year. And Job descriptions now want you to most of them.
Maybe instead of a new language, maybe we need better programmers that don't produce bloat.
Though I do think we need to move away from C/C++ to a more widespread functional language.
