Ever had problems copying files to Windows file share due to unsupported characters and resource forks? Apple has A LOT of work to do there before they can say they've nailed the interop story.

Also, once Apple starts shipping Intel boxes, a lot more black hats will have opportunity to come up with creative ways to fuck up macs. Right now every security update closes gaping holes that would be totally exploited if more hackers had Macs. Just wait and see now.

    >> Sorry...you can't compete with freedom

They don't have to. They've filed software 3000 patents last year, some of them on bone headed, obvious things. Once they realize they're really in trouble, they'll start using those patents. And individual developers aren't going to be able to withstand their legal pressure.

So the only hope for OSS is companies with insane patent portfolios, such as IBM. IBM and Microsoft (and other companies, such as Hitachi, etc) have cross-licensing agreements, and companies whose patent portfolio is less broad (such as Microsoft) pay big bucks to the ones that have better portfolios.

Sadly, it was IBM who started the whole thing about patenting obvious shit at Microsoft. One day Bill started receiving infringement notices from them, so he was like "WTF?". Then he hired some more lawyers and told them to patent everythin, and in the broadest terms possible.

This weapon is in standby mode right now, but I won't be greatly surprised to see RedHat be thrown out of business by a patent lawsuit, or Linus sued over some kind of broad OS-related patent.

Non-compete my ass, if they paid me my salary for this whole year so that I don't compete, I'd gladly accept a noncompetitive clause. Microsoft has its hands in every god damn pie in the industry. No matter what you do after working for Microsoft, you're competing with them.

I wish Dr. Lee good luck with this, and hope he wins in the court. This will open up the gates for a lot of senior folks at MSFT who are right now contractually bound by that little non-compete clause.

I would also like to see AMD throw some money to "starving artists" who develop GCC and boost the activity there. If this makes Intel's own compiler irrelevant in the marketplace, that's fine with me. If AMD-infused GCC performs better on AMD processors, that's fine with me also.
