1. They have a right to deny service to the folks who have pirated copies. 2. If you have a legitimate copy you have nothing to worry about. 3. If you have a pirated copy and have nothing against Microsoft go buy a legal one NOW. 4. If you have a pirated copy and are against Microsoft, then STOP USING WINDOWS instead of whining that it's overpriced, bug-ridden and poorly designed. There are at least TWO alternatives right now (MacOS X, and Linux), so there should no longer be any excuses.
As someone who's been involved with performance/stress optimizations I can tell you that for each situation you can carefully put together two types of tests: one which proves that there's a problem, another that proves the problem doesn't exist.
The proof is in the pudding. Let Sun release it and administrators use it for a year or two, then we'll see if it's good enough. Right now I'm having doubts it's as good as they want you to believe.
>> Intel let its marketing people get caught napping.
To the contrary. Intel let its marketing people tell the engineers what to do. So they basically said, "we want a 3GHz chip, because consumers are stupid and they only look at GHz figures". P4 is a result of this. It's only real feature is that it can be clocked insanely high. Clock for clock it's not only dumber than AMD chips, it's also dumber than some of Intel's own processors (Pentium M for example).
It's embarrassing when a company makes a mobile chip, that at 1.6GHz outperforms their "desktop" 2.8GHz chip, especially if 1.6GHz chip uses their previous generation core with bits and pieces of P4 core thrown in for compatibility. I just hope they pull their heads out of their butts and release a replacement for "fast but dumb" P4. And for the love of god, someone tell them to make this replacement 64 bit. There's no point in denying that 4GB of address space is no longer "enough for everybody".
PSP is going to be BIG I think. I hate being chained to a TV when I want to play a game, just as I have to be chained to my desk when I want to work on my PC. To fix the latter I have a laptop, but there's no real solution for gaming right now.
Make it look like a solid block of brushed aluminum. No "curves", no "bio friendliness", no bullshit. It should look like a high-end CD player. A power button on the left, power LED on the right, DVD tray in the middle, four controller ports below it.
But judging by these pictures we'll get a cheesy looking piece of Chinese-made crap again.
Management by itself does not have any value. If you outsource everything but management, rich motherfuckers in China and India will sooner or later realise they don't really need a $1.5M a year CEO where an Indian guy will work for $150K per year and be pee-your-pants happy.
Now let's assume that majority of what this country can export is made outside the US and shit hits the fan (companies become controlled by foreign individuals). Two things happen. One, you now must buy this shit from them and since you don't really make anything but hamburgers, houses and children, they can dictate prices. Two, investors start jumping the ship, because they don't see any reason to invest in a country that hollowed itself out for a quick buck.
There are major repercussions to this related to social security, baby boomers, overstaffed military, gigantic budget deficit, etc.
All you ever see there is bicubic interpolation which they teach you how to do in the first few weeks of any computational mathematics class. No smoke, no mirrors, no nothing. Just a stupid-simple interpolation algorithm.
I've heard on NPR radio that even if Chinese economy sustains the current growth rate for the next 50 years, and Japanese economy gets 0% net growth, the Chinese economy will still be 1/2 of the size of Japanese economy. So while China has extremely large population, the rapid growth of its economy is often overestimated. It's easy to grow from zero if you measure growth in percents of GDP. As soon as they get to better levels economy-wise, it will be more and more difficult for them to grow.
authoritative either. I have no doubt that Big Soviet Encyclopedia for example says Lenin was the best thing since sliced bread, and America is pure proletariate-oppressing evil. Would be interesting to see articles on Capitalism and Socialism there, too.
I'm finding Wikipedia authoritative enough. They also aren't afraid of dumping ALL of the facts at you, not just the politically "safe" part.
You'll be able to browse and buy tunes from within Windows Media Player 10 and no network connection is required to just play the tunes. There you go, standalone client.
1. Bright, clear, high resolution screen. 800x600 would be nice, so that PDAs could render text more smoothly. 2. 1G of flash memory at least 3. At least 8 hours of battery life at 100% processor utilization. 4. Tablet behind the screen, mouse pointer, touchless pointer positioning, REAL writeability, like on Tablet PC. Working character recognition. 5. Seamless interoperability with Windows AND Mac.
That's how you do "remote desktop" and "remote assistance". If there was no server you wouldn't be able to do this. The missing part is the ability to connect, say a dozen users. For this to work you need to buy licenses.
You can do RDP over analog modem and things are pretty darn snappy. And you could do this since Windows NT4 Terminal Server edition. Remote desktop comes stock with NT OSs since Windows 2000.
Basically all the disgruntled folks will pack their shit and walk (that's another side of fire-at-will contracts, I can just pack my bags and go if I want, too). This is great for everyone. Senior people will get more interesting jobs, low level people will regain the opportunities to get to senior level (hard thing to do if senior people don't go anywhere from the team). People who are in IT by mistake and who managed to survive layoffs will finally find other jobs. Everyone will get better salaries, bonuses, you name it. I don't expect anything dramatic, though. But any bonus is better than NO bonus.
All of this, of course, assumes that the economy really picks up, which is something I'm not seeing.
They sell 160 kbps VBR tracks. Should at least sound better than 128 kbps tracks Apple sells. Now if they offered higher bitrates, and gave you a choice there, we'd have a winner.

>> it's not worth watching
Well, guess what, even uncompressed TV is not really worth watching. Two hundred channels of complete bullshit.
Why the heck would we want people on Mars?

Where do I apply for a researcher position to test the effects of alcoholic beverages and pretty women on my health?

Linux community silently "borrows" more and more ideas from there. Make up your fucking mind people, this is getting disgusting.
"Where's my dinner?"
That's what you say when you're married to a woman who can cook.

So you think Pentagon was damaged by a passenger plane? These fellas don't think so.

I'm having a hard time imagining that a Russian would call someone with a Jewish last name Russian. :0) Russia is a heavily anti-semitic country.
Corporations don't pay any taxes these days. If this poorly made garbage never enters the US, no US tax will be paid on it.

Try it. You'll be surprised how zippy it is, even over analog modem. Contrary to popular belief it DOES NOT just send screen captures.
