    In fact, Cargill (USA company) is looking into importing 300+ million gallons of ethanol duty free from Brazil next year, and exceeding over half a billion gallons by 2010 -- I think I read this in last week's US News & World Report. (i may be wrong on the numbers)

    There is a place for precisely this thing -- though based on different technology. I can download various linux distros at 60 megabits per second. It's a bit hard to set up, but once you figure it out, it's mad fast. There's other applications as well, check it out:

It's not quite P2P, but more like bittorrent where you download from multiple main sources, but you never need to upload.     Actually, I was driving one time in Texas and there was this road crew picking up those small cones .. about half a mile down the road, there was a cone in the middle of my lane, tipped over with the gray/white bottom facing me. I could not change lanes, nor did I have enough time to slow down (65 or 70 mph) .. I hit the cone at 55+ mph and it ripped the plastic trim part that attaches directly below the front bumper (a rather sizeable piece) off. I was able to recover it, and it only had a small dent in it. I was able to reattach it easily.

    Define the Linux penguin for me. A penguin is a rather general animal, and it can be drawn in many different ways. I see this as a cartoonish baby penguin, not Tux. Therefore, I see no problem making a drawing of a penguin.

    sometimes people who aren't familiar with the relay service will go like this:

    they try to talk *to* the relay operator as if they're a person they need to go through. they should go like

    blah blah blah

    instead.

    during the conversation, the relay operator will augment the conversation like this:

    (background music)
    (crying in background)
    (ur msg was garbled pls resend)

    IMEI # Handset was approved in Finland? And this guy is from the Netherlands? This makes it more likely it is an April Fool's joke.

    If you read Star Wars books like any respectable slashdottter, you'll find that C-3P0 was designed to be as neutral as possible to a wide range of cultures, it has eyes, fixed arms, neutral mouth with no teeth, open gesture.

    Reliability.

    You don't want to have to replace thousands of pricey (back then) consoles if chips prematurely fail.

    But that doesn't *really* matter. To see further because of redshifting, we need the infrared range. NASA could still colorize images like they have in the past and make the general public happy. This telescope will give images that are just as good (or better?) as Hubble, though not in the same wavelengths we're accustomed to.

    If you're taking introductionary electric circuit classes, or classes with advanced semiconductor stuff such as transistors (devices here at OSU), a really good EE reference/textbook is "Lessons in Electric Circuits"

    The problem with that is that the dust on Mars is electrostatically charged -- ever open a box with cling wrap and have it stick to your hand? Tried shaking your hand to get it off? Didn't work? That's the problem. The dust won't simply come off if you vibrate the panels.

    Yes, google for the "Gimli Glider" for more info on that canadian plane (canadair's first boeing) that accomplished this feat. Rather lengthy reading around there. In fact, they landed w/o a functioning nose gear. Nobody was killed, and I don't think there were any serious injuries at all -- they even repaired the plane and put it back into service!

    The article isn't really clear whether the 24 & 48 hours of exposure were all at once, or a few minutes each day, so I'm not really sure either.

    The electric fields induced by headphones would be different by the 60-Hz waves they studied in this study, so the results of this stucy are not necessarily transferrable to your example. A separate study would have to be done to consider this, but I suspect the worst damage would be to your eardrums if you had excessive volume from the headphones.

    If anything, I think this indicates the remarkable ability of organisms to repair their systems by purging bad cells and fixing DNA that is 1/2 broken. It shouldn't be a problem if you at least limit your exposure -- don't be shaving for an hour every morning, etc.

    Nvidia has good reason to make their graphics drivers proprietary -- preventing graphics cheats in games. However, Intel can't use this excuse. I don't see what they really have to lose by making the drivers open source.

    Do you mean the binary drivers? Some people, such as Linus have issues with using binary-only drivers with the kernel as this 'taints' the GPL kernel. Nvidia is not releasing the source b/c this would make it extremely easy to cheat in games, ie, turn on wireframe mode, etc.
