I collected a bunch of them from Radio Shack. I never used them as a bar code reader. Instead, I gutted them, installed batteries, and added a switch for a tail and they make a cool red-led flashlight.

It's not much, but at least I found a use for the things.

Will they try and force you to sign to book a ticket?

  3. What the government can do on Federal Cyberspace Policy Draft Released · · Score: 5, Insightful
The document says in part tha the Federal government can help to "empower Americans" to protect cyberspace by:
    1. raising awareness
    2. sharing information about vulnerabilities and solutions
    3. fostering partnerships with and among private sector groups, and others
    4. stimulating improvements in technology
    5. increasing the number of skilled personnel investigating and prosecuting cybercrime
    6. protecting Federal computers
    7. promoting increased security for the networks upon which the economy and national security depend.

It seems that for cyberspace, as for species, the best protection is in diversity. The email worms thrive not only because Outlook is flawed, but because outlook is everywhere. The same concept applies to hardware from chips to the backbone as well.

If anything, the Gov't should play a roll as a supporter of open standards, limited patent abuse and, for starters, fixing or flushing the DMCA

  5. Re:Red Hat? on Red Hat, IBM Expand Linux Deal · · Score: 2, Insightful

How can Red-Hat Linux or any open-source operating system become the "Microsoft" of anything? Yes, some things only come in an rpm, but that dosen't force you to use RedHat.
If you are using open source software, you can by definition - get the source. You can even make all the Debian packages you like and provide them to anyone you wish.
If you choose to use software that isn't open-source, it's not RH's problem if rpm the only package it's released in.

At worst, RH is the "AOL" of the Linux World... but that really isn't all that bad.

  8. beyond mirrors on Google Mirror Beats the Great Firewall of China · · Score: 1

Mirrors are wonderful things. My employer was blocking access to a
page about the Slutzky Theorom (I wonder how that got on their
blacklist) but thanks to Google's cache I could actually find the
information I needed to do my job. The problem that remains for both
the Chinese people and cube-dwelling peons like myself is that those
in power control the access point to the net and can monitor activity
    as well as block content.

Wouldn't it be nice to have access to real wireless connectivity that
was not controlled by the local government (or boss) much like an Internet
    version of Radio Free Europe.
