And probably not too long after they cave into marketing/investing $$$$$. They've already grabbed the right side and top portion of the screen for ads (that I'd like to scrape off). Fortunately they're smart enough to know most people hate graphic/pop-up ads.
As soon as they throw graphics in, or if I can't get them to be easily ignored by Mozilla, I'm switching to another search engine. So far they managed to only partially piss-me-off, with the non-intrusive ads on the right/top. They go the human factors down, but run the risk of loosing alot of followers if they piss-em-off enough by grabbing more of my screen or embedding graphics.
Me too. I've got a Compaq/HP? Presario with a working RedHat 8.x install but the f*ckin wireless Multiport W200 add-on card (USB based Orinoco chipset) doesn't work w/ wlan-ng or anything else. Other than that, it's practically a no brainer to support RedHat on their laptops.
What better way for the US Gov to get some spyware into all M$ installations, than to have M$ issue a major warning like this. I'm sure they're considering using M$'s monopoly to exploit eavesdropping on some of Al Qaeda's employees.
For a project at my son's school (I ws a parent mystery guest) I demonstrated to the kids how easy it is to install Linux over a Microsoft laden box and what you could do with it.
For the most part the kids loved it, and they were so curious what the software was that could actually replace the great beast. Some of them thought it ran ontop of Windows. BTW - the kids are in 4th grade.
So I left them with the disks for RH7.3 and now they get a kick out of installing RedHat over the XP disks they had paid for, and vice-versa. It's quite funny, but now they're learning how to replace the OSes back forth (for practice I 'spoze). I'm thinking of going in to show them more - dual boots, other things they can do w/ it.
The real funny part is that my son said that a couple of kids got in an argument over what OS was better than the other, available s/w, games - etc. I think it's quite funny. Good think it didn't come to blows!
Watching some of the old moonwalk videos in slow-mo clearly shows some rods in the background. Lately though, I haven't been able to reproduce them on my VCR, further proof of the conspiricy.

How about this.... use an open source speech synthesis tool/API that can play these text books (especially as more get added) over a PDA, laptop, etc while cruising in on the way to work and home. Something like:
http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/ (no plug, just did a quick freshmeat search)
would be pretty cool to get some good novels read to you w/o buying the tapes.
I'd pay $50 / yr. provided that when I report a spam that got through, they credit me $.50 per spam email. They let 100 through in a year, and they're not doing their job of killing the SPAM - it's a wash. They succeed, and they profit. They fail miserably, and either it stops the crediting when it hits $0, or they pay me.
Basically Redhat will be squashed just like Netscape, as AOL is in-fact in bed with Microsoft.
I was really hoping they'd stay on their own or that IBM would buy them before anyone else. If AOL does aquire them, it will certainly mean the demise of RedHat Linux. Fortunately there are many alternative Linux distros.
Man I read shit like this and right away can only think how stupid the recording industry is - and just a few months behind the wall street investors.
The bubble has burst, you're not gonna get 9.95 for X songs for Y month subscription.
What's gonna happen when nobody signs up is they're going to be forced to give it away for free. After about a year or so, when they got alot of people hooked, they'll start charging again for some bonus software/functionality. Then the flock flees again. It's totally cyclical. They really just don't have a clue.
Me too, Axis definately has it's act together. I see security applications with these.
Only problem w/ the Axis is I've seen it lock up at times going through my Apache rewriter (maybe needs a config tweak) or via my SMC NAT when accessed from outside the LAN. Maybe a slow connection on the other end, but I don't think that's it. I should really do a firmware upgrade on it:O
Other than that, it works fine - I wish them luck too and hope to see more stuff on the market with embedded Linux. There's some jockying going on - i.e. J2ME, Tini, etc. but there's plenty of space in this area. You should be able to flash a new release of Linux into your HDTV, security or phone system to get more functionality out of it, and you should be able to telnet into it to fix things:-)
115 posts (by the time I read this), and only a couple of people mentioned VA Research. I wonder how many actually remember the days when the company was named this (and it wasn't too long ago). I hated when they switched it to VA Linux. I thought the original name was way better, and they should go with it again if they're gonna switch again.
I picked up a few SMC barricades for myself and friends (their dough of course:-)
Awesome. Can poke reverse holes, and many other configs via the web interface.
The 7004awbr is a great unit with a Lucent Orinico card. I can get great reception anywhere in my house. Plus the card accepts an antenna for an extra boost. Not a hitch except make sure you do the latest firmware upgrades for performance and any last minute fixes.
I feel the same way. Fsck the 2 years. What makes Win2k SP1
anymore stable than Linux 2.4? I have
a bug that is killing me, and I'm at the
mercy of M$'s release schedule for SP2.
At least w/ Linux you can dive into the
source code (kernel or suppl package) and fix a
critical problem if it is holding you back from deploying a successful app.
To me, that is much more important than other
people's opinions of what is constitutes stability.

Cool. Thx for the pointer. I'll start
saving now, the 802.11 will probably be $299
(or more) as well:-)
Reason I need 802.11 is cuz
I've built a Home Theater PC (running a web
server to control some X10 devices), and I'd
like to use the Visor (802.11 + WAP/WML) to do
some of these controls. Kind of like a remote
to my web server. I'd like it to play my MP3 playlists (on the Server/Home Theater) too. It'll be an expensive
remote, but'll have many other functions too,
and should help offset the cost.
I don't have a Visor yet, but will buy
one when it has a Springboard attachment
for 802.11. Until then, I'm not sure if
it'll ever become a reality, so I'm backing
off. I'd think that if it has the power to
make cell calls, it should have the power
to speak 802.11 and/or bluetooth. Still waiting
patiently...

So it looks like the "New Napster" will have a pretty femine look/feel if the image on that site is representative of what's to come.
Rumor has it Windows 98 was originally slated for launch but NASA officials feared too many Shuttle repair missions to reboot the derned thing.

Dell is F'd up on the pricing.
Looks to me like I can customize the $199 one for $80 more and get the same config (400 Mhz, 64/48 MB) a savings of $20. Dude, we're rippin you off.
oops - doubt they'll be selling bread to the kids :-) better make that breeding
Kind of goes withoug saying that this is a breading ground for pedophiles, or a good place to trap them I spoze.

Doesn't Micro$oft, the industry leader in super-secure - get whatcha pay for software, have a version you could pitch to your dain bramaged mgmt?

If I could ride my Segway all day, and not have to recharge it afterward, this might be real cool!
