The last time I have reinstalled my Win2000 workstation at work it take me 10h, the time to install it, find the good driver for the motherboard (fujitsu siemens computers), the video card... Patch, reboot, patch, reboot 7 time in a row with Windows Update. Install softwares (Office 98, Compilers, Editors...). Patch, reboot, patch, reboot... And finally find patch for products not in windows update for them to work (correctly) in Win2000 (I hate that DOS foxpro or VB5 and some others for the olds applications I maintain). Ho yes, for Office 98 to work correctly as a DDE component in Win2000 without having the superuser right, you need to edit thoses 198 registry key (No joke here but just the bold plain truth:( )
As a windows user, I am from time to time confused by other windows versions of the control pannel. I use 98, but when I need to go to the control pannel of Win2000, I take time to find my marks. For the WinXP control pannel, I have just stopped to try to understand his organisation... You don't need to change of OS to be confused:)
And they are right ! Well, it is true that courriel is a case, but there is no french word in french for e-mail. E-mail for the french linguist has no french meaning, but courriel has. Courriel is the contraction of 'courrier electronique' as 'e-mail' is the contraction of 'electronic mail' and see like that, it is more correct. If you want to bash on courriel there is a better word for that: CD-ROM proposed as cederom:) In this case there is no correct french meaning:(
In the case of SpamBays, if you make a mistake, you can correct it by putting back the mail in the correct folder. It will correct is db and negate the error.
Wrong, Start on the hypotesis that the credit card compagny can't keep their files secure, then they can't have them. But credit card need thoses file to store in them the relation between your credit card number and your account number. If they can't keep thoses files, the credit card business is not viable, then does not existe, then no credit card...
And there is 1/1,000,000,000 chance that you own me 1 billion dollars... As you say, there is to you some reasonable amount of doubt. Please, I don't accept check. In case of an error of my part, I will send you back your money.
I have dealt with students bringing up exploits to me that they have found work in our system. First I have to verify their claim, second I have to consider the damage they may have done (purposefully or not). If this means a call to security then I am obligated to do that. After that I have to consider fixing my system and damage control.
Because of this kind of risk for me, By 3 times I have never divulged security holes that I have found or see other student used. You like to risk to fuck up a student career because he report you a security hole. For me I prefer that the system be fucked up than my scholarship (As long I am not in bad relation with to ones who abuse the system). In this last case I prefer the anonymous full disclosure with source of the exploit code by flyers on the campus... A lot of headache for your kind of people... Now I am out of school and I have a little shame to not have reported theses security hole. But like leo Ferre say in is song: "Avec le temps, avec le temps, va, tout s'en va"
Elevators in big building have this kind of 'intelligence'. They know the pattern of the employes movment at certain time in the day and prepare a bunch of elevators at some strategic point before anyyone have asked for them. They are driven by Fuzzy logic IA in the basement.
Well, I tried to search in their database for Kraftwerk, Art of noise and Jean Michel Jarre and found no match except for 1 track in a compilation for Art of noise... It seems they need to work on their catalogue (for me)...
If a mail service ask you a visual test to get in, do it if you can. Change if you can't. Now if all mail services do it then I am pretty sure that a blind linux hacker (I know one) could set up a mail server for the blind... This server could not be free but a possible alternative. And another point: Have you tried to load Yahoo mail or hotmail in lynx? If not, try it, it could be fun...
If you have a blog and one day decide you just don't want to maintain it any more (or can't afford the fees associated with hosting, or whatever) and decide to take it down, should you then be required to keep the site running an additional period of time just to be sure the response is available for the same length of time as your original comment or longer?
No They just say that you need to keep the response a least 24h. If you delete the original article you can delete the response at the same time. You don't need to keep the response to an extent that the publication time of the response equal the publication time of the original article. Just 24h or as long as your article is published.
Holocaust DeniersNews site deny to post the reply. Holocaus deniers go to court and are rebuked because of false theory. No reply on the web site.
Accused rapistVictim site deny to post the reply. Accused rapist go to court and is rebuked because of no diffamation. No reply on the web site.
The rule of thumb is: you can reply if and only if there is evident diffamatory, false information. Not just because you don't like what the other say.
I don't think this law is stupid. This law extend what we already have for printed press and newspaper. The right to respond to an article we can find not true or diffaming in the same newspaper. Fortunatly in France it is in the law, because some newspaper doesn't let the response, and we can get a court ruling to get this reponse printed.
While it may be one thing to require professional media outlets to provide such a forum (which they generally do out of good journalistic practice), it is another thing entirely to require it of any and all online content
Well, In France for what I know this right to respond is in the law. It is not just a good journalistic practice. And fortunatly, because from time to time we saw a title (by court ruling...) on a response on an article and this because the newspaper doesn't have let this response being printed in the first place. Don't think that everybody is nice and beautiful. Things can be futile, but not all. And let an open door to responses is not futile.
A security company researching vulnerabilities must have at their disposal a huge quantity of software."
Which they can buy with the huge quantity of money they get from clients.
Well, try to buy Office 4.3 in a way that Microsoft or the BSA accept it. You can't buy it second hand (the EULA say you can't sell it or transfert your right to use it), and Microsoft don't sell it anymore.
Some years ago 2 book have been on the shelves "naissance d'un virus" (born of a virus?) and "mutation d'un virus" (mutation of a virus?) with all the source codes with the complete polymophic mutation engine (TPE). All wannabe h4x0r can take from these book all is needed to write viruses. Did you see rampant virus propagation when they have been out? not me. And second point: From this source they can write worm who work like slammer and then detectable like slammer by antivirus...
Currently I download some files using bittorrent (wolfenstein enemy territories) but when all the seeds go away it can cause issues.
WET is my 2nd torrent experience, and the second bad one. I have an ADSL (3M/128k). On the length I have let Torrent downloaded (nearly 3h for 34%), I have get my upload capped at 12k nearly all the time, but my upload has runned at 4k in average with spikes at 10k. With gamespy with 42 min of waiting in the queue, I have downloaded it in less than 2h... I don't remember the exact stats from my first download, but they was as bad as this one... Why everyone say bittorent is the next big thing, but I can't get it to seem work correctly ?
And don't ommit the tax deduction went you donate to a cause. Sometime it is less costly to send some money to some cause than to pay some kind of taxe on it...
I think that MS doesn't sell no more at loss now. I think, tht their production cost have fallen under the actual price tag they sell them. To try to explain that: Take a price of the greatest PC when the X-Box was out. Take the price of this same PC now. Calculate the price drop of the PC (in percent) and apply it to the X-box...
Cracker: He stole my virus.
Judge: I award you $1000 in damages, and 20 years in jail
Actually the cracker could not get 20 years in jail on this judgement. But, after this judgment we can then take another judgment against the cracker on the fact that he have claimend his partenity in the previous judgment:)
Unlike the other patents this does actually look like an original idea.
Like the other patents this does not actually look like an original idea. It's look like a drop down where the content of the list is filtered by the firsts characters encoded in it and ordered by the frequency of the non filtered words.
3. The Directive should provide for a mechanism that ensures that open source software development will not be negatively affected. Amendment 17 empowers the European Commission to monitor the impact of the Directive on innovation and competition, and in particular on small and medium businesses. This mechanism will guarantee against any adverse effect of the Directive on the community of independent developers, in particular on those that are contributing to the development of open source software products.
Personaly I read this like that:
European Commission can count the Frags and Blogs them... Punt on the line. There is no word to say that European Commission can take action against the offender.
My comment could be considered as flamebait, but: Yes, we are having every day more processing power, but it is a reason to burn it because we have plenty of ? I run win98 to play games because it is lightweight than 2000 or XP. I code my CPU intensives programs in text mode in flat real mode to get access of my 512Mb of ram keep all thoses cpu cycles for me. For this I can thank FreePascal and TurboVision. And Yes, I have plenty of processing power, but I prefer to keep them for my process than let them be burn by windows or gnome with enligtment...

We can't use them as human subjects, they are not human, just spammers.
