Screw the broadcasters, screw the cable companies, screw the FCC, screw them all. Turn the damn thing off. You don't need it to live happily. Believe it. It's 100% true.

Oh, the signal's encrypted and I can't record it with my TiVO to watch later? Really? You want me to pay you every time I see it? Really? Hmmm. You know what? I guess I don't give a shit. Keep your signal. It's mostly noise anyway.

  7. Re:Huh? on Disney Blames Apple For Music Piracy · · Score: 1

You own CDs. You don't own the copyright to the music therein -- that's seperate.

Yeah, I get that. My question is, if the copyright holder doesn't grant me some right to copy (through a license), I can't use the stuff on the CD, right? Or, if it's just the media I own and no license is required or makes sense (like a book), I can do whatever I want with the content as long as I don't pirate it, right? I can make copies for personal use, etc. (like a book).

I really want to understand this. What is the legal mechanism that's at work here?

  8. Huh? on Disney Blames Apple For Music Piracy · · Score: 1

This CD that I bought, am I allowed to listen to the copyrighted material that's burned onto it? I must, in some way, be allowed to copy it so that I can listen to it, right? Or is that illegal? At the very least the digital information has to be read by the player and turned into sound waves by my stereo equipment (a form of copying) in order for me to make use of this thing that I bought.

If they aren't selling you a license to listen to the stuff on the physical CD, then they're being sneaky; allowing you to break the law. Except, in this instance, they don't mind; they'd rather you broke the law than sell you a license. Is this correct?

Execellent point. The ads will go the way of web banners, but I think you're being naive if you think TV will go back to "the olden days," in that event. The stations will continue to require the same revenue. They'll just find a way to defeat PVRs. Something like putting the ads on the screen during the show or integrated more with the show somehow. Whatever it is, it probably won't be better - let's hope it isn't worse.

The kid at the controls was playing Mario-whatever - it looked really good. Nobody was messing with the xbox controller, so I took it over. Lots of demos listed. Of course I immediately went to Halo. There's so many buttons on the damn controller, I couldn't figure out how to get it to start playing the game so I figured it was just a movie-type demo (preview) and I ended up trying the Oddworld demo instead (not bad). Later, while I was at the mall, at an Electronics Boutique, I watched some kid playing Halo (doh!). He didn't know what he was doing (at least he figured out how to start it!), but it didn't matter. It was fantastic. Just comparing Halo to Mario-whatever, xbox wins, hands-down.

They're obviously aware of the perception of these new smart tags, then. If they were blissfully ignorant of the questionable nature of smart tags, they wouldn't have put all that stuff in there.

My guess is, they've decided they need to move slowly. Can't immediately, willy-nilly edit the content of any page that the browser displays. Slowly, but surely, we'll get there. I say let's put a stop to it right now before ridiculous precedents are set (or good precedents are unset).

While I'm posting: keep in mind that Microsoft is neither good nor evil. It's a giant corporation without morals of any sort. It is doggedly determined to maximize profit. Any entity in the same position (giant, mindless corporation with browser dominance) would implement some sort of content control of web pages. It's a revenue stream. An attempt must be made to tap into it in order to further increase profits.

You should take your own advice - don't compare MHz. That GHz Athlon would not "kill" the 500 MHz G4. I'd estimate them to be roughly equal in performance.

This is the bane of Apple right now. They've got comparable processors (speed-wise), but the MHz numbers don't look good at all. Motorola needs to trade instructions per clock cylce for higher MHz ratings to make them sound better (faster) to the lay-public.

    Great.

How am I supposed to justify all the hours (months really) I spend making a "pattern" (software) when the first person that buys a copy of this "pattern" can simply run off a million copies and give (or sell) it to the rest of our potential customers? One sale? For months of work?

It's nice to strive to live in a eutopian world where everybody has the right to do whatever they want (such as make and dispose of copies of anything they obtain). It would be grand. But face it (you must), we don't live in such a world. We have to make compromises to this eutopian, moral view in order to compensate for the fact that we live here. Unfortunately, this means taking away people's idealized rights.

It's important that creators of "patterns" have a real incentive to create good ones. Otherwise we end up with lots of crap. This makes it necessary to "limit the freedom of a human being".

Yes, I realized that. Kinda bums me out a little bit - I'd love an absolutely quite computer. I've read stories about totally quiet iMac clusters (hard drives must have spun down). Sounds (ha, ha) neat.

However, speed differences aside, I much prefer working on my fan-less PowerBook 1400 than my not fan-less Blue and White G3 simply because of the noise difference. Both, obviously, have hard drives. Maybe notebook hard drives are quieter (spin slower due to power constraints?).

  25. No fans... on Looking Back at MacOS on x86 · · Score: 1

I think it's obvious that Apple's main revenue comes from their hardware sales (as someone else already mentioned) and this is the key reason why they aren't trying to sell MacOS for x86 machines. If they did that, they'd simply be an OS vendor and they'd be in direct, head-to-head competition with Microsoft. They'd probably have a hard time convincing themselves that that's a good business move. They'd either come out on top and be much wealthier than they are now or they'd lose big time. They're probably happy where they are now.

Anyway, to the main point of this post: lately Apple has been moving their entire hardware line towards requiring NO FANS. Only their G4 towers require a fan right now; no fans in the Cube, Powerbooks, iBooks, or iMacs. No way they could continue this trend with an x86 processor inside.

I think this is a MAJOR selling point for Apple hardware and I can't understand why they aren't screaming it from the rooftops. Well, while I don't understand it, I'm not really surprised, Apple has a history of doing great things without letting anybody but the already converted know about it. Personally, having to use my computer all day everyday, I would (and will) pay quite a bit extra for a machine that doesn't emit a constant fan noise.
