I liked the "convince your parents" section. I'm not really sure that being dependent on a calculator is such a good idea.
I see things like "14/2", "sin(0)", Integral(1/x,x), etc. in people's histories all the time. Those are the things that you should know how to do; the calculator is making you lazy. Now for things like 239874/12398 calculators are nice, but I'm not sure it's worth $130 to a high school student for something that a 30 dollar scientific calculator can do fine. Graphs are nice, though.
Going of on a tangent (heh), I rather dislike TI (I found a bug that kills your memory and TI refuses to fix it), so go with an HP48/49 if you need graphs. TI is for students that "want to do well on tests", HP is for people who do mathematics on a regular basis, IMO. That said, my TI89 is pretty useful.
Does anyone know if I can get postfix (or sendmail, or whatever) to accept the first relay request and silently relay me the message. I'd like for these people to think that I'm an open relay, and then be screwed over by a server that sends all the mail back to them (after taking a minute or so to process every command). I'd also like to see what they're spamming...
I've never used C#. It's M$-sponsored, and I don't really like M$. I know that Java is less Free, but I really like the language. I feel that it's very clean and well-deisgned. The default API is also well thought out and I really enjoy using it. Just because I like Java, though, doesn't mean you have to like it:)
I also like the fact that pretty much anyone can run my program. If this weren't the case, then Windows users would be pretty much out of luck if they wanted my program. I'm not going to port it.
I'm sure C# people think the same about Mono. It's "cross-platform". "It's great that Linux users can run my program", I'm sure they think. They weren't going to port it to Linux either;)
Oh well, when there are choices, there will be arguments about an individual's choice. It's better this way, I suppose.
Try solving a simple Cauchy-Euler differential equation with your TI-89. It doesn't work.
However, substitute e^t for x (assuming you use the form x^2 * dy^2/dx^2 +...), and you have a constant-coefficients differential equation that it has no problem solving. How hard would it have been for TI to add some routine to do that. Better yet, you can solve the equation by finding roots of an auxilary equation. That would have been three lines of TI-BASIC to implement.
Why is that not the calculator's fault? Whose fault is it then?
TI is generally bad news. My roommate and I found a bug that kills all your memory and TI told us that they wouldn't fix it. "Don't press those buttons" is what they told us.
I'm going for an HP when I next need a calculator (our school required TI-89s, but frankly I get more and more fed up with their idiocy every day. They're great for high schoolers, but for people doing real math, I think HP wins.)
My school does. The internet is essentially useless. SSH in from your home computer (because you don't want to cart your tower home just so you can use eclipse; my computers at home won't run it quickly but they run X fine) and forward X? AHaahahahaaha that's a security hole!
CVS from sourceforge? Ahahahaha that's a security hole!
Check your off-campus email? Ahahahaha that's a security hole!
Vist a site running on port 8081? Ahahaha that's a security hole!
I'm also required to run an anti-virus program* on my Linux box. Linux is a big virus-spreading OS these days.
* Actually, I'm required to lie and say that I'm running Anti-Virus software. I'm not. You know why? BECAUSE THERE AREN'T LINUX VIRUSES;) (Ooh but you can be a vector for transmitting windows viruses. Block email then, that's where all the fucking viri/viruses come from these days)
Yeah sorry. I'll be so glad to be out of this place (where students are expelled from privately writing a rap song about the math program) in 2 months.
Sure. And he would never spy on us. I completely trust his unseen code. Look in to the light and everything will be okay. Don't ask questions, it's for your own good.
Lots of OSS drivers were written under NDAs BTW.
And have you ever heard of reverse engineering? I guess that doesn't win you awards *psh*
The hard drive requirement is fine. 250G is affordable these days. Most games are worth the space (especially considering ut2004 is ut2003 + extra, so i could delete ut2003)
And as for graphics cards, ut2004 runs fine ("only" ~30fps @ 1024x768, good enough for me) on my MX440 under Linux, so I don't feel sorry for people who "need" a FX6900Ultra or whatever the best card is these days.
Guess what guys. You a) don't need FSAA at 1600x1200 (because you can't see aliasing to begin with) b) your $25 monitor* doesn't have 1600x1200 dots on it! Oops!
* you need a fairly expensive monitor to see that many pixels. I run mine at 1240x930, but I'm not convinced I can see every pixel (this is a sony monitor, it's really good IMO). 1024x768 on that monitor, however, is BEAUTIFUL. 120Hz refresh, crisp colors, etc. High resolution !always= good.
Back when I had my G4 cube, qemu ran wine just fine. I was shocked to have Windows programs running on my PPC box. I didn't do anything special either, just downloaded and ran whatever they had available at the time.
May I ask what you do?

Why would I want to run win32 programs? I can't think of one Windows program that doesn't have a better equivalent for Linux.
OpenOffice, LaTeX + emacs, eclipse, blender, gimp, mozilla, maple, mathematica, ut2004, etc. What do _you_ need Windows for?
Heh I show off my email. People think I'm "1337" because logcheck on my server at home emails me wonderful stuff like:

Isn't giving the government your encryption keys like testifying against yourself? And isn't that not required by the fifth amendment?
Here's my key: Oops I forgot it. All this stress does that to you, you know. You can try guessing it though, there are only 2^1024 possibilities.

It's called "see sharp" because if you ever have to code in it you'll want to keep something sharp in sight so death is only a stab away :) Hahaha.
You know, I was about to post something insulting to you: "Ooh now I have one day of battery life! d00d 1337!"
:) Good work. /me wants blinkenlights in his TI89....
But I realized that that's actually kinda cool

I don't like the TI-89 family

Suspicious, yes? Provable that you did anything? No.
:)
Oops. You can't sue someone for being suspicious. Yet

Umm how do they know you're using a ripper? Oh. They don't.
/dev/dsp it writes /home/you/file.mp3. They really can't tell the difference :)
They send you a stream. Instead of writing it to
The AC has a point. We need diversity in the Middle East. Arabs and Jews are the same race!!! Why can't they live together??
They could have a pretty good society if they stopped murdering each other's women and children!
Sometimes that's an improvement.
J2EE? Seriously, this is Sun here. They're big supporters of Java :)

YOU have the choice to read slashdot. Don't like it? Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
Yeah, we like reading about why M$ sucks. Sorry if you're not smart enough to see why M$ is a problem. Your loss.
It highlights your search terms in a non-cached page. That's quite useful, IMO.
But if you don't like, it don't use it! Nobody's forcing it down you.
Turn off their port. Seriously, that's what my school does.
True, and this is the google baar for mozilla, if you want one :)
They should change the name to jrockway :)
