We had 7 and 8 had RSVP'd, only the sponsor didn't show up (figures I guess) as stated above
We had the obligatory M$ bashing.. talked about some recent articles... sipped some coffee... thought we may have seen some AC's lurking in the crowd (though none threw any little crazy haired troll dolls at us!).. had a poll where Cowboy Neal wasn't an option!
So all in all it was pretty geeky.. location wasn't the best, but it worked out alright.
I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say I'll turn up for next months.. SO if you're in the piedmont NC area make sure to signup, it was good unwholesome fun!

they are moving away from that it seems. At least in the latest openoffice build (which is comperable to the SO 6 release) they did away with the gawd awful integrated desktop because no one wanted it and it was buggy as hell (proof open source projects do tailor to the user) and they are making everything more modularized so things load faster..
I've been running open office at home for a while now and other than an occasional word import quirk I've been more than happy.
My Visor does crazy things when I try to hotsync it on my Dell Windows 2K machine at work.
Sometimes if I plug it into it's cradle(USB) while another program is up on the pda( for example: Rally 1000) and press the HotSync button on the cradle it reboots my machine, and it will occasionally do the same thing, but not quite as often, when I try to plug it into the cradle while it's off.
It's more of a USB problem, but I think it's the way they designed these cradles, because I don't have any problems with any other USB devices on my machine. *shrug*
Two things I've found funny, is it just me or is the installation package screwed up? Cause I can't get it to install.
But the thing that is ironic is that to use it you have to install it from Windows...
Tech Support:Hello LinuxDA tech support. How can we help?
User: Do you have an installation that is compatible with Linux?
Tech Support: No we don't support Linux.
User: So this really is the M$ offices!
How in the world can you say MSNBC is slanted towards Pro-Bush!?!?! Have you ever watched the station? MSNBC is almost as left wing wacko as PBS is!
For the most part I'll agree Fox News is fairly right-wing, and definitly on occasion crazed. But with about them being the only ones to take up that flag they have to make up for the other left-wing crap that is made up by all the other stations.
Oh, ok I only counted 87 definitions in the glossary. I guess it has to be 100 before it's "technical".
"The most important contribution of the DEC-20 to networking was its support for the ARPANET protocols, first NCP and later TCP/IP. For many years, DEC was the only major computer vendor to support these protocols, which were mostly developed on DEC 36-bit machines under TENEX, TOPS-10, and TOPS-20 (and later on VAXes for Berkeley UNIX). "
Ok so us geeks understand this, but come on!
I think I'll print this out for my Grandma to read!
This could provide rather humorous results when we find out how secure this box really is. Do we really need a couple thousand of these being 0wn3d by 3l33t h4x04 d00dz to be used for DDoS attacks?
Evening News: This evening we are recieving reports that the internet is being brought to it's knee's by a set top box called "Trojan Horse", this is all due in part to it's OS Linux. Microsoft has announced that they have a patch available for customers who own a "Trojan Horse" that will replace Linux with Windows Trojan version. This is a minor upgrade from Windows 98.
Why does everyone only look at the home-use for such a product? These babies could be the answer TV stations and Video Producers have been looking for. Look at current DV and MiniDV, sure you get great quality but storage is a problem. So Sony came out with their camera that has a harddrive in it. Still this is all very inefficient.
Pop a 300 gig video tape in a camera and my GOD!
The only thing that scares me though, is this being adopted by the pr0n industry. Isn't there enough of that crap out there already? Do we really need amateurs being able to shoot 300 gigs worth of pr0n?
D-VHS blank media is going to sell for $10-15 a tape. I know I'd buy a camera that would use this!
I looked through and for the life of me couldn't find anywhere where it was mentioned that Disney released Kiki's Delivery Service! Sure I hate Disney just as much as the next guy. But I think the movies are cool. I like being able to go to a movie theatre and watch something G rated every once in awhile. Back to my rant about Kiki's.
Do you know what movie was released the same year as Kiki's Delivery Service? The harolded Little Mermaid. And I'm sorry Kiki's Delivery Service puts the Little Mermaid to shame! Miyazaki is the same guy that brought you Princess Mononke (which I didn't think was Disney but some one mentioned up above it was I not sure on that one. My guess is maybe a Disney pawn but not Disney directly.) The scenes in Kiki's Delivery are absolutly amazing. There is so much emphasis put in story and detail! And you know how long it took to make Kiki's Delivery Service? If my memory serves correctly 7 months! Maybe our animaters should go study over in Japan.
You know what? I've been to China.. didn't have to pay a thing! My company got the bill.
And you are not exaggerating the situation enough. I went to what they call a "computer mall" and just about every vendor had boxes of cds. Games/Mp3s/Software, everything from Reader Rabbit to Oracle software. And it is any $10. More like 8RMB per cd. That equates to $1. And you get bulk discounts! Unfortunatly it would look bad for my company if i was stopped by customs with $20,000 in pirated software:).
However, I did get a really nice set up Cambridge sound works speakers for $15.. totally legit too!
Honestly, I would have to say 90% of China if asked what copyright is they would say huh?
Only difference is that China doesn't trust anyone other than China so no mass piracy hosting there.

For those readers who don't take time to go to links and often fall for stupid comments. The article is refering to the Business Software Association and not they Boy Scouts of America!
And shame on you for your bad grammer God of all that is Taco.
Here is the official anti-piracy website in Italian.. couldn't find it in english

What I want to know is how in the world it really had that big of an effect in 96! Wasn't 1996 one of the worst years ever for voter turn out?
And you have to figure only a small percent of those who voted in 96 had internet at that time also!
Sounds to me like this is the only semi interesting information the news conglomorates could find since all the election coverage this year to date so far has been pretty for a nap at best!
From the start of hearing about the ZapMe! program. At the time when it was at it's "peak" I was working as a network administrator for a fairly large public highschool where one of the science teachers was on fire to sign up. I pretty much stayed out if it and let them deal with it all so I wouldn't be responisble for the consequences. After going to a couple of technology conferences and talking to some of the ZapMe! reps (every time I talked with them they were dressed in a costume! Santa/Bunny/Chicken!&!& never could figure that out!)
Any ways didn't sound too bad, but I refused to sign anything and eventually the school board decided to go with the go ahead to sign up. Well luckily before they signed all the final papers one of the lawyers was going over some of the contract information and they had altered the agreement at the last minute! You can rip of big companies all you want and you can swindle home users because they're idiots! (not flaming just trying to make a point!) But conning public schools is the worst thing in the world! They barely have enough money as it is pay the teachers let alone buy computers!
And for the record we had Channel One and there is no way I would compare it to ZapMe! I was very impressed with Channel One, they were nice as could be and legit all the way. And the commercials for the most part were funny or at least not annoying. ---
All I am saying is what if Carnivore is bigger than you think? What if it is really the NSA that is running this whole operation? Come on people I would rather be more paranoid than not paranoid enough! ---
You know that is a really good point.
I think there is a little of both in the US. Sure we have the side where people only care about drinking and going to the mall, but there is also the side that speaks out even louder than some of the issues that are discussed in England.
I think overall England is definitly more culturaly literate than the United States due to the multi-culturalness.
One thing that kind of shows the difference in my mind is that at midnight in the middle of London is much safer than noon in any town in the US hands down!(minus towns of populations under 20)
I feel like I am a fairly cuturally literate, I have traveled to Europe, Asia, and South America.
And I really enjoy interacting and meet other people from other cultures.
What really gets me are people who are born and live in one county their entire life and have no desire to see, the Grand Canyon, or the Nations Capital, or anything other than going to the movies and themeparks. I think that is a slap in the face of the founders of our country who have made it possible for any one to have access to broaden their cultural understanding. And I personally think the Internet is one of those ways! ---
"They just can't understand that when I go to family reunions, I don't want to talk about deer hunting, or college football, or how Michelle drove the tractor for the first time."
My God you said it all! I would have to say people that I know that aren't online and like to talk about deer hunting and stuff are the ones that are wacked! They have no perspective of how a balance of virtual/reality/intellict/fun can make life enjoyable.
Or I could just waste my time away in Everquest believing I am really lvl60 Monk:)

Some further thoughts..
.. had a poll where Cowboy Neal wasn't an option!
Good turnout for the area I guess..

It even does pivot tables nicely
i've never had any problems using the spreadsheet module... can you give an example of something to try to generate erroneous data?
And I'm using the latest openoffice build which is quite a bit different from staroffice 5.2 so maybe thats it?
But we just had an article a few days ago that claimed Linux does work as a desktop!

wierd!
It's available for download now.. the download is 4.45 megs approx. but only the version for Palm IIIx and IIIxe are up now.
Ever notice how Katz always posts statistics and studies that "aren't published yet". Hmmm, he wouldn't make this stuff up would he?

Just an idea.

They would have to be crazy not to nerf this for home use and target it at professional and prosumer videography use.
