OSS isn't better just because it's free or because it's not Microsoft.

Actually, yes, OSS is better because it's not Microsoft and because it's Free. But OSS is not perfect. It still have many problems and compatibility issues. But it is better than MS.

I used MS Windows and their software and had nothing but problems. The constant crashing made me switch to Linux.

Linux worked great, never crashed, but I spend all my time configuring it and not doing my work. This lead to productivity problems. For this reason I moved to the Apple Mac.

The Apple works even better. It does not crash, I don't have to configure anything, it runs all my software from VIM to iVideo, and I have plenty of time to get my work done.

Now I just need to keep myself off SlashDot.org.

Up until last month I was running an ISP. I had 50 customers using Windows and 3 using Macs. 40 of the Windows customers had constant problems with their systems. 10 of them did not have problems or were able to fix their own problems. The only problems the Mac users had were typing in email addresses wrong (typing , in stead of .) and they weren't really even problems.

So 90% of my customers running Windows had problems with their systems.

People say, oh just make sure you run spyware checkers and anti-viruse programs. Yeah, every time you install something you have to run at least two spyware checkers, and your anti-virus program just to make sure there isn't anything piggybacking on the software installed. That's not how I like to spend my time on a computer.

It seems that most Windows users spend more time fixing their computers than actually using them.

    List of problems:
    Is very, very slow: spyware.
    Crashes all the time: spyware/viruses.
Won't connect to the internet: Corrupted configurations.
Won't send email: Outlook outbox corrupted.
Pop-Up ads all over the place: adware.
    Sending out Spam: virus.

"Or are they that confident people won't stray if they're invited to sample the competition?"

Microsoft has been trying to push people away from their systems for years by making awful software. Not that many people seem to be straying away. The way I see it, people will suffer greatly before they switch to anything different.

I have a friend that I setup with a really nice Linux system. It does everything he needs. It does not crash, it does not blow up. Yet he still fights with his Windows system and the Linux system just sits there. Every time I talk to him his Windows system is doing something like crashing or rebooting.

I had a business partner that has a Windows computer with a virus that calls europe every 10 minutes. He can't install a virus scanner because windows is so busted that all the install programs crash. He has to unplug the phone cable then mess with it then get back online to do things. The funniest thing is that he has a brand new Mac Mini still in the box that has been sitting there for over two months.

I'm not kidding about either of these folks. What I have wrote is true. Maybe I just don't understand because I haven't used Windows in 10 years.

  19. Re:Why P2P of any nature is banned at my institute on BitTorrent Inherently Illegal? · · Score: 1

Exactly. P2P software is just bad. If it would play nice, then it wouldn't be blocked as much. The only reason it's blocked on my network is because it will consume every bit of bandwidth. A single user of BT can bring my whole network to it's knees. I've seen where one person is running it and other users can't even get DHCP requests through (they can't even get an IP to get on the network). I don't know if this is a network architecture problem or just P2P, but if I allow one person to use it the whole network suffers.

I wish that I could afford the P2P detection and blocking software, but I can't. So I just eyeball the traffic from time to time and when I see a computer connecting to 100's of other computers I know there's a problem. Or if I start getting calls from users that can't get online then I have to ban the user using P2P.

I'm not trying to censor, I'm just trying to keep my network running smooth. If P2P software makers would put limits on their software, then it wouldn't be any better than downloading from a FTP server. So they aren't going to do it, and I'm not going to allow it.
