I always thought that SCO would put RMS on the stand in a second if they could during a jury trial.
I should qualify the issue lies not with RMS but with the majority of the American public. RMS has a consistent, logical position. It's the same with ESR. But they are not the sort of people you want in front of a jury. Thou if you could get both their egos in the same room it would be one hell of a brawl:-)
OK you realise that serious steel has been on the market for many years? Products like Pittsburg steel are used by the major iron works, ship builders etc. They produce highly specialised steel to various standards. They use large expensive mills to produce accurate sttel, since mini mills have insufficent controls to proudce accurate steel.
OK you realise that serious cameras has been on the market for many years? Products like kodak are used by the major newspapers, magazines etc. They produce high quality photographs to various standards. They use large expensive film to produce accurate photographs, since digital cameras have insufficent resolution to proudce accurate photographs.
I'm looking at on demand machining rather like http://www.emachineshop.com/ I already have a number of shops in my area offering such service.
For instance, I like to build boats. I tend to use stitch and glue construction. Rather than loft and cut designs I send a cad doc to the shop supply the marine plywood and voila back comes my ready to stich panels.
I also like sculptures based on formula, weird I know. I have had a few 'small' scultures made in resin $$$
At present the cost of this type of manufacturing is prohibitive i.e. material cost is a small portion of the cost. There are a few shops doing it and they have no incentive to drop prices. Now if a lot of people wanted stuff made this way the market would expand and more companies would enter. I'm hoping to many will enter and supply outstrips demand and prices they go down:-)
If you have anything other than a desktop cnc mill then I'm insanely jealous:-) Stop wasting your time here and go and make stuff.
Myself and two other cohorts dreamed up this scheme to enable us to retire early. We dreamt up this project that needed huge sums of cash. We then siphoned 20% off the top straight ionto our own projects, known as wine, women and song.
Of course it was only a matter of time before we were caught and had to retire leaving a new line of porkers at the trough. But those incompentent fools only took 5% and spent the remaining on projects.
This retirment swindle has gone on for years and now everybody aspires to this rather than finding fusion.
I'm not an AI or Prolog type person. But if there are a lot of conditional statements that are based upon some know steps then generating them might be an idea.
Of course I tend to be slightly biased towards generators as they save me days of coding and testing in my current job.
Ignore the analog stuff. As a software guy he can handle digital far easier. Analog may be needed later but it really is chalk and cheese.
I myself went through the same thing a few years ago. Been a prog for 20+ years and needed a new challenge. I bought a LARGE breadboard and some discrete logic chips, leds, dip switches. Built a bunch of nand, and or etc circuits. Played around with 555 circuits. Then went into PICs, pretty easy to interface and pgm.
The easiest way for me to learn is to build something simple and then build on that. I only refer to books when stuck. There's plenty of info online and it's really not that hard.
I'm currentlyt working on my ham licsense, morse on QRP:-)
If you wish to buy components check out ebay, I have thousands of components for about $200, if I had bought them at retail it would have cost me thousands. Also I'm not scared if I smell that something is burning, it only cost me pence not $$$s.
This is almost perfect for me. Now if somebody would just give me one of these with an 80x25 screen. I'd buy one if a flash. 700hr batter life that's more like it.
I don't want a dvd player, I don't want a fancy color screen. I want battery life.
Well, except maybe the current state of mankind, organised savages do not a civilisation make.
I wonder if the /. adverticals like this one have ever been duped?
How about adverticals by editor by date?
Or are they more prevalent just before the pay check is due?
My guess is that the eds are making a nice sideline.
How about hasn't?
I thought the addage was 'if it ain't broke don't fix it"

As soon as the HHK is equipped it's mine.

But never mind, you probably still hand weave.
Gee I wonder why nobdy has done this yet!
Impartial is almost impossible to find in IT.

Yes,
:-)
but a CNC machine would require plans and that would mean others could do it.
I hope that techs understand that if they produce CAD drawings for stuff others can then have the items made, can give feedback etc.
If this guy had produced a CAD doc for this hack I could then get my cover made from titanium or whatever.
The more people asking for CNC services mean reduced costs
Easier to sum up :-
OSI = West Coast
FSF = East Coast
Classic, could be re-phrased as :-

WTF
A change in the current socio-economic environment does not mean we turn communist. There are other options.
Still, stand up salute the flag because doing anything else is comm^h^h^h^h terro^h^h^h^h^h umamer^h^h^h^h^h ummm if you're not for us you're agin us.
No,
it pretty much matches my experience. Arrogant and ignorant, not really a good combo.
You can always tell a microsoftie, but you can never tell him very much.
I would not be angry I'd be ashamed.
I'm always open to somebody trashing my code. If they can trash it I need to learn what flaws I'm not aware of that I'm coding.

Sure coz it's real easy to run Linux on the XBOX, right?
Where's the Sultan of Brunei and HRH?
Yep, but it'll take another 10 years before the peons get it.

Wake up it's the car not the driver. Or to be more correct the tyres.
Schumi is still the cheating lying genius he always was.
Personally I think this is the best saeson in years.

How do you know?
Exactly which passenger plane currently flies faster than the speed of sound?
Concorde used to fly at twice the speed of sound but has been retired.
