    Interesting that all but one of the UNIX probs can also be traced to Windows. Apcahe runs on on Unix and Windows. FTP, RPC etc etc

    Looks like the FBI is clueless, jeez why do they even bother. Must have been some grant money available they wanted.

    It's simple there are more windows boxen on the net ergo they have more problems. I _believe_ that unix is more secure but I'm not going to bet on it.

    Umm, the original poster is correct.

    Think about finding the cure for cancer, how much is that cure worth? Or to put it another way how much would a sufferer be willing/able to pay. Now think about a drug that will treat all the symptoms but leave the original complaint. Take the drug and live stop taking the drug and degrade. 1x?$ 30yrsx52weeksx?$

    The profit is in repeat business not curing people. Good business demands you maximise your profits with little or no concern for anything else.

    Sealand is a joke, _7_ mile offshore is well within the bounds of UK law. The telling statement is 'self proclaimed' whch means squat I can proclaim my self king of America, it don't matter damn until the law wants to dispute my claim.

    The promise of data freedom is a joke, Sealand is an old WWII gunnery fort, designed to defend the Thames I think, where do you think the data link comes a shore? Kent or Essex?

    The best place to put your data if you want immunity from prosecution would be the servers of the NSA. National security concerns would stop any court case dead. Of course you could develop a sudden fatal heart condition when they find out.

    Well I can see how the CD might be delayed by this action. But they could release the mp3s/oggs etc and build demand for the CD when it is released.

    A great engineer will have done this before and know what goes where and why. Testing should be confirmation of the design not fault finding.

    I see this everyday where I work. The good engineers think they are breaking new ground and working all the hours to achieve this. The few experienced engineers go home at 5 and always hit their deadlines.

    For most engineering endeavours it's all been done before. We turn out systems not inventions.

    An engineer makes a $500 item with $50 worth of parts. A designer then adds $450 worth of crap.

    People has always lamented the losing of skills, where have all the assembler programmers gone? The wheel wrights? Even machinists are going away.

    But the ideas aren't disappearing, there will always be room for the people who do what others say can't or shouldn't be done.

    Throw out that old Z/390 or AS/400 and replace it with centrally managed GUI terminals. Saves the company $$$ My understanding is the only thing stopping Intel from taking over the mainframe space was a stable OS and memeory bandwidth, looks like that's solved.

    But given SGIs history this is probably destined for running simulations and large factoring jobs.

    Must be a troll

    Look asm is not needed to write M$ apps. It is needed for highly computative tasks. While Fortran does a good job in most cases sometimes it needs hand crafted asm to get the job done in time. When all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.

    If you enjoy the work then work as hard as you want.

    What I would do is not make a big deal of it but make sure you do your 8 hours and go home. If anyone tells you to do more hours tell them politely no. All the time look for another job.

    I assume the owner is the first to arrive and the last to leave?

    If your dad wants he can rent time on a real honest to goodness AS/400 at the above link. It's very reasonable rates and has all the tools he'll need.

    Open source RPG, 'fraid not. Oh how I've looked. The problem is that you would also need a DDS and probably CL compiler. Plus support for data areas and user spaces.

    None of the above is insurmountable but no one is going to write it, I've toyed with the idea but in the end decided against.

    What could be done is a new Linux shell ASS, 'AS/400 Shell' :-) More likely called QCMD :-(

    I've wondered if someone in Rochester doesn't have an emulator for AS/400 hardware similar to the OS/390 emulator. Have a copy of OS/400 for this emulator, ta da instant training environment.
