About 2 months ago I got a letter saying that they were cutting Majestic from the original planned 8 episodes to 4 episodes, and that the beta testers would be cut off after 4. My guess is that they knew they were getting cancelled then, but they wanted to get the extra subscription money from people for a few more months. This game costs about $120 a year... not exactly cheap compared to other games. A few extra months from people is certainly worth it for them. It is really ashame that the Synthetic folks teamed up with EA, the new owner of the "Worst Software Comany in History" belt (sorry Sierra).

Has anyone else out there run into the problem of percent raises within a company? I came into my department at a very low salary because I had no experiance or degree, but that was over 2 years ago. I am now one of the most productive developers in my department but because of my company's policy on percent raises, I am not getting more than a 15% raise a year. That might seem like a lot, but it will take me 3 more years of that in order to get to the pay of all the other people in my department. Has anyone else run into this, and possibly have a solution? Or should I just be looking for another job?

This guy built a brand on the term SSH... and openSSH DOES confuse some people (don't bother with the "If I know it everyone does and if they don't know they aren't worthy to use a computer!!!" please) and he does have the legal right to defend his trademark. Just cause you make something free to compete with a named product, doesn't mean you can name it virtually the same thing. If it WAS legal, think of the havoc MS could cause.

At the same time, if you keep most people off the list, less admins out there are actually aware of the problem, and there are less people that are actually working on a solution. At this point I think that the best solution might still be full disclosure. Yea, the problem gets exploited that much faster, but at least the solution gets out there pretty fast as well.

This website never ceases to amaze me. For those of us that actually have jobs, you rapidly find out that companies rarely choose the best product for the job. If your boss says "Let's get Microsoft because it is the company standard", or "Let's go MS cause I like the rolling stones and MS used their song in a commercial" you don't have much of a choice.
I am sure that the argument to this is "I would never work at a place that wouldn't run everything opensource and let me run anything I want on the network where I have total and absoulte control, and when it all blows up I just blame the other guy". Well, in the real world, thing's don't work that way. I get a paycheck, and my job involves several windows-based products. The fact that the people here consider the vastly dominant (market-wise) operating system to be irrelivant is always amusing.

I don't think that companies like Oracle would go ahead and pursue a "brain-dead" project just for kicks. For purchases made on eBay using PayPal on or after 11/10/00, buyers who qualify for eBay's insurance policy (currently limited to $200) may recover up to an additional $200 of protection from PayPal. Actually, this statement is the single best indicator that this entire company is a sham. The FDIC is present in order to protect someone with a bank balance of loosing their money if the bank declares bankruptcy. Paypal is in fact FDIC insured, as far as I know. This means that if they go bankrupt you can get your money out of them. It has NOTHING to do with fraud, and appears to be trying to convince the user that an unsafe method of currency transfer is in fact safe. I would strongly question why they would put this in there other than it being another way to strengthen their deception. I know for sure that if I take out money from a bank and loose it in a scam, my bank doesn't give me my money back. Yet this is exactly what the above statement is promising.

The concept behind paypal is that you keep money in the account, and you get/pay while keeping a balance in the account. After all, paypal stays in business because they get the interest off of the $40 million people have in their accounts at any one time. If this concept is used, there is no credit card charge, or mabye not the same credit card charge, as used to purchase the DVD player. You might be protected in your charge, but I personally just use the existing balance for new purchases.

It appears that this company takes payment via Paypal. I read an article a few weeks ago about paypal's dispute policy. Paypal stated that they do NOT get involved in disputes, and it is buyer beware. When you use paypal it is the same as using cash, not the same as a credit card. If you have a problem with the seller, you can't get your money back through paypal. I am thinking that some company out there invented this system that does not really exist, made it almost too good to be true, and then sent an email to slashdot to get the hits. Anyone who purchases this through Paypal is probably never going to see this system. Anyone remember that Seti@Home PCI card? I bet this is the same thing, but these guys are actually taking the money and running.
