Ok FIRST off, I don't think you are a shrink so don't try and be one. You couldnt even begin to understand my personal issues and I have no time to explain them to you. So try and stay on topic of the debate please. Use of YOUR experiences make a better debate than slander.
Anyways..
Have you ever gone to school in a ghetto? Doesn't even have to be a ghetto, could be a sorta bad side of town. The kids there are raised in an enviroment without good discepline. The reason they have so many problems when they get into school is because all the sudden there is discipline and wham the kids go nuts. Kids today just are not as prepared for the rigors of school like they were since the pre-1960's.
Back then kids had respect for teachers, I know this because I ask my parents and grandparents. You never struck a teacher or talked back then. I can recount several times where I went to school where either a. teacher gets in middle of student fight and gets hurt, b. teacher gets in fight with student, or c. teacher gets jumped after school, or d. teachers property/car is vandalized.
Now it's a proven fact that overcrowding leads to violent tendancies in mammals. Do you recall an experiment where rats had unlimited food supply and were allowed to reproduce in an inclosed space? Eventually the rats became cannibalistic eating their own young to conserve on space. Schools are very crowded, where it was maybe 16 to 20 students per class in the 1970's, it's nearly doubled now to 30-40 students per class. That is 1 teacher with all those kids crammed into one classroom. Classrooms that were designed in the 1950's-60's no less.
Now imagine if all that M$ money was put into building new facilities. Schools allways have at least 1 teacher in every classroom. With the cost savings from using modern building materials and insulation, the school districts could afford to hire more teachers.
I know how much a computer costs to run every month, about 20 dollars per computer per month. No matter how many computers M$ donates it still won't add up to the costs savings by introducing new facilities.
Now back to the corporal punishment, no I think thats a parents choice, shame on me for mentioning it. I've never been a party to it myself but believe me, some of those kids that beat up teachers deserved it. These kids have no fear of anything or anyone because there is no discipline at the home. They can be very sociopathic and cruel, and as much as these rotten bastards would love to just roam the streets all day and cause trouble the law decided it should force them to stay in school for babysitting by underpaid teachers. They are a distraction to the other student's who really want to learn so they can be successfull in life.
One last point I would like to make about property is it gains EQUITY. Computers don't. Equity can be used to get loans, to pay teachers better, so their good students can get the attention they need. A 2000 dollar PC is worth only 150 in 3 years. No product has depreciation that bad!
The one thing I take heavy issue with is the anti-virus companies decision to have the product that I paid to make sure unauthorized programs not run on my computer are letting this one in. To be honest, do I really need antivirus programs with all that I know now?
I have a bbiagent.net router that I routinely check on. Several times my friends have brought over M$ machines infected with viruses, I would see them trying to connect to the router on goofy ports, then look up what viruses use that port and take the right action.
What would be really nice is if the EFF or some similar organazation makes a blacklist of products infected with this crap. I don't think it would be too hard to detect, lots of smart people out of work with time on their hands now. More of us than the FBI, yeah coppers good luck!
I would not buy a product nor subscibe to a service that allows access unauthorized by me. The rest of/. should do the same.

This is the PRJC 8051 based MP3 player. For $150 bucks you get a small
board with a IDE interface and Fully open source software. I'm not a
programmer, i'm a hardware monkey as the developers call me, but I do know the
buzzwords they like to hear like it can be compiled with cygwin, flash
upgradeable, ect. The neat thing about this is if you have old 72 pin simms
laying around they can be used for extra buffer space. I'm not an audiophile,
but we're talking MP3 here, needless to say the sound quality is good. You
can hook up cheap LCD displays to it (cheap as in 5 to 10 bucks) On top of all
that you can add ANY IDE hard drive to it as long as it's formatted fat32.
mount -t fat32/dev/hd2/mnt/mp3. Both of these I put together ended up in wood
boxes that I sanded, stained and lacquered myself. They are more beautiful
than anything you could buy (deep dark cherry wood color ooooh) The one in my
friends low rider goes well with the rest of the theme of his car.
I'm glad to see slashdot reporting on these types of open source mp3
players, in these hard economic times just walking into fry's and buying
what you want is no longer a reality.
1 thing i havent seen on this thread is what the teachers responses were to the MS settlement deal. Listening to Rush Limberger this morning, he said that the teachers said screw the computers, just give us the money. After watching the track record of these teachers over the last 30 years, my only answer to them is, Do you realy think we're going to trust you with all that money after the way you left our public schools systems in such shambles?
Where america used to be first in acedemia we are now 4th behind asian countries. I've watched PBS specials on how asian schools conduct themselves, it is allmost a throwback to american schools in the 30's and 40's. Teachers use corporal punishment, shame and guild trip techniques, get involved with parents and generally do all the things we americans tossed out of our schools years ago, mainly discepline.
I think computers are going to do more to hurt than help honestly. I remember working for the pleasonton union school district, it was a constant challenge to fend off the waves of would be script kiddies and hackers that habitate the k-12 system. The company I worked for was not cheap either, I was whored out at $150@hr to clean up these little "messes" that the kids made on the network.
Another thing scary about computers in schools is it will justify even less spending on academic supplies such as textbooks, pencils, papers. The teachers will spend less time teaching the children how to work through problems and school is going to become a very cold place with little to no interaction between student, teacher and parent.
MS should be forced to pay, but are k-12 really the right answer? How about donating a computer to every high school graduate? Instead of using them as a "learning tool" why not use them as an incentive to get kids to hit the books harder. Of course we could use china's techniques of public humiliation (read dunce cap) and caning to make kids focus. Being that we are america, we spend too much time worrying about these kids rights, fuck em I say, my tax dollars are paying for their education, not a good time.
There is a third option of course, this was really popular in the 80's and 90's. We could make MS buy massive quantities of ritilin for our kids and dispense it in their milk. Like bart simpson says, "No itchin or twitchin cause I take my ritlin". Being one of "those" kids who was called down to the nurses office to take that crap, nah too publicaly humiliating (other kids said we took crazy pills)
All jokes aside I think the best thing for MS to do is to buy up property and erect schools. Even if the Oakland school district got new computers, there is no data wiring, and I doubt the electrical is any good either. It's still going to be the same old drab emotionless schools that they are now. Space is what schools need more than anything. How many times have you driven past a school only to see 3 or 4 of those "temporary" trailers parked on the blacktop. Our school buildings have become the equivelent of trailer parks, our kids are the equivelent of trailer park trash. This is what needs to change, not @%#%@ more computers to take up %@#^%@ more space. Am I the only one that see's this or am I a crack smoking lemur?
They're all too busy playing Q3 or wolf. Look for usurper, he's a paypal sysadmin. If you ever have any problems just search for him on gametiger.net and annoy the shit outta him. I do:P
This is gonna sound sick, but I think most of the male population of/. have been through this or they're lying.
When I was uhhm, 14 or so. I discovered masturbation (yeah late bloomer so sue me) Man what a thrill, I could not get enough, everyday sometimes 5 times a day. Then one day before school I was in the bath at about 7:45, "Just another minute mom" I desperatly tried to finish it off, then more knocking at the bathroom door, "I said just another minute" Then I heard my uncle's voice, "Johnny (not my rl name) what are you doing in there?" my reply, "Nothing!" Then he started kicking the door, and knocking really loud. "Johnny are you playing with yourself in there?" I yelled back that I was taking a bath but by that time I knew the gig was up. I jumped out of the bath and had blue balls for the rest of the day.
Needless to say a 11pm to 6am "it's OK to masturbate to pr0n law" probably would have helped me avoid that embarassing situation.

Just a few weeks ago there was this
article about 3com faceplates. You can consolidate all your phone and data into
1 jack while running just 1 cable run to your rooms. Now if you got money
to burn, you might consider one of these
babies from Cisco. This is their media convergence server which will combine
voice/data/video into something that can run over cat5. A MCS will cut out
your need to run separate phone and video lines. Hey want to hire me to set this
stuff up? I'm totally jobless right now and could really use the money:)
Good luck on your house!
I'm going to point to this
+5 informative post I made before I jump in and flame on Aerie.
Now what the heck are you guys thinking? Cheaper my foot "which it plans
to sell for $39 to $49 a month, according to Aaronson" This is the same
price metricom had when they first introduced the ricochet service years
ago. It was $20 for the ISP and $20 for the modem rental. Wheels in
the sky keep turning backwards. (brain fart sorry) Following the link Michael
provided I got to this paragraph, " To avoid the $4 to $10 fees Metricom
paid on each pole-top transmitter, Aerie is negotiating with municipalities to
exchange free service for pole space." This is nothing new, nothing new
at all, Metricom had an entire department dedicated to just that purpose called
the Right of Way department. When Ricochet was first rolled out in San
Jose the same deal was made with the City of San Jose. I think we gave the
city like 300 modems and free service in exchange for letting us use their
poletops. Just about every city we ever made that deal with TURNED
on us eventually. Wanna know something else? They kept the modems too, and
continued to leech off of the service.
If Aerie really want's to make headway into the wireless ISP marketplace they
need to do more than follow the obviously failed strategy employed by metricom.
People will gladly let you put an unsightly pole on top of their house if it
means free internet service. That was what metricom did in the beginning
to create service area's. If there was a big gaping hole in the network
somewhere, and somebody subscibed to the service and wasn't able to get it,
metricom would either A. install a poletop, or B. install a wired access point
(which was way cool cause it meant a T1 line coming to your house) If the 802.11
networks have proven
anything, it's that a grassroots effort for wireless connectivity does work
without having to get the city involved at all.
I wish Aerie the best of luck getting the ricochet network back to full
operational status again, but if you don't learn from the past you're doomed to
repeat it. Try and keep it down to $30@mo if
you're really serious about getting subscriptions. $39 to $49? Hell
might as well say you're going to charge $40 to $50 a month. Sorry, it was
just really insulting to see all this excitement over a one dollar change in
price.

( vroos server: server://66.56.41.94:2213. )
look in the help file on how to conenct manually. also visit this site http://kaliservs.dyndns.org/ as it will list other private kali servers by ip . dont worry all is not lost . we will all end up on the same server at some point i hope !!

My friends had nintendo's or sega's. I had a turbografx, then the really really luck ones (rich) got a neo-geo for christmas. Those bastards.
I remember walking into my 7-11 (yes kids in those days 7-11's had games in them) and seeing the neo geo for the first time. There was 4 games on it, magician lord, King of fighters, Nam75, and Super Baseball. My buds and I loved vids the way some kids loved baseball. We would buy every game magazine out there, hang out at the flea market trading games and then go home to play games. Games games games. We allways reminised about the good old days when America was the console king with Atari and the 2600/5200/7200. The great debate at the time was nintendo's decision to check games content before we here in america got them. We didn't care if there was a cross in the graveyard in castlevania.
Ok so I proved how deeply emotionally attatched I am to games, let me go on about the neo geo. So there was only 1 kid in the entire east side of san jose that owned one. He never let anyone near it. Our only recourse was to go down to 7-11 to check it out. 4 buttons, cool. Memory card so you could save your place in a game? whats that and where do I get one? Headphone jack? Why were all arcade cabinets built like this one? In terms of sound and graphics, neo geo was top notch.
For awhile there it seemed the neo-geo was going to die into oblivion, but alas a savior came in the form of metal slug. This side scrolling platform shooter showed just what could be done with the system if the artists were given enough time. The attention to detail is apparent everywhere in the game, especially when it came to animations of the different characters. It wasn't just someones helmet flying off when they got shot, their head, and hair flew back as well.
For a time after that, the fighting games started getting really popular on the NG with the release of samuri showdown. All of the sudden out of nowhere came neo geo (about mid 90's) with fighting games that were on par with rival fighting game producer capcom. Even sega's entry into the foray with the virtua fighters series did not get nearly as much play as the neo geo fighters.
15 years later, after being all grown up and looking back.. One of the big dreams me and my buds use to say as kids was, "Wouldn't it be great if we had a game system that could play ALL THE GAMES?!?!!?" I see that mame icon on my taskbar, begging to be clicked.
Unfortunatly this is the reality for the arcade now. PC's have gotten so fast, and so graphically powerful that any system can be emulated to a near %100 accuracy. What did the arcades do in response? They never really did anything, they went about business the old fashion way thinking that things like game houses and home gaming was just a fad that would pass and soon the children would be coming back eagerly slopping quarters down the chute.
Neo Geo, even though they never released new hardware outside of that newfangled 64 bit system, did everything they could to make games that were pleasing to look at, and pleasing to play. It didn't take a 32bit processor and 63 channel sound. Games like metal slug were "designed" and not just a copycat of some other game that was immensly popular.
Well, at least there is one arcade left, I heard King of Fighters 2000 is pretty popular there.
When judges read these names don't they ever just LAUGH these lawsuits out of court? Isn't our justice system bogged down enough without some jackass trying to sue over some content created by the user and not the actual site creator?

Which leads me to one conclusion.. You must be an out of work tech worker:) Hey do like I did, your broadband is essential to you as a geek, become a neighborhood ISP and get your own DSL paid for. I just walk up the street and collect on the first of every month W00t!
to all my neighbors houses. I have 4 neighbors all splitting my one DSL line, blue wire running along all the fences.
My main argument here is from the wire hookup on the outside of my house to the wire running to my neighbor house is all my property. I paid for it, I maintain it, I own it. Sure they're using bandwidth, BANDWIDTH I PAID FOR!!! So it comes to reason that if I pay $39.95@mo for 384 down and 128 up that i'm paying for bandwidth.
Also to note, my ISP does not handle the squid proxy, they do not do the DNS cache, or any of the other network services I provide, they don't even provide support for my neighbors. You know what? This has me so pissed if I don't stop now i'm itching to turn this into a -1 flamebait post of mighty vulgarities. It's wrong, it's bullshit and I think they're just trying to find yet another way to screw us.
Educational softare allways has been, and probably will remain geared towards Apple for the most part. I still see schools using IIE's wired together on an appletalk network, using an ascend appletalk router to connect it to the rest of the world. It's obvious school's are in a dire need for new hardware based on just MTBF's. These things are bound to die.
Also the number of quality.edu software vendors has decreased DRAMATICALLY over the years. I know CCC has closed shop here in Sunnyvale, not sure if it was from a lack of sales or rising rent costs. Either way they laid off 3 of my buddies and closed the entire 6 building campus.
So if the M$ deal goes through, schools will be left with less choice for.edu software. They will be tied down to one o/s, who probably would try and sneak a way to dictate what the schools use for educational software. (i'm seeing lots of learn to use word, windows, blah classes in my head right now)
With RH, I could run wine, I could run any number of mac and IIE emulators out there. If RH is really going to offer support, why not build a.edu distro made to handle this stuff? Is this in the RH equation at all? Emulation would provide the schools a way to never have to worry about their software going obsolete again because the O/S changes every 2 years.
Teaching ghetto kids how to use linux is pretty scary, I can see the number of website defacements on the rise in 15 years if this RH deal goes through. Good in the long run because it will get PPL to lock down their machines better.
How dare you, how dare you (words escape me) you monster.
I have a lot of jewish friends, even family. I for one do not see anything wrong with demonizing a demon. It is what it is.
Hitler killed 300,000,000 people in interment camps. 1 person makes it a murder, 6 people a slaying, 20 people a serial killer.. Let me tell you, once you've killed anyone, your soul is shit, you're going to burn in hell, you are a demon.
What? do you think we should have a game that simulates b-17 food drops over afghanistan? To show our children that we should be KIND and be GENTLE because there are collateral causualties? I watched 7000+ people lose their lives in front of me on TV and let me tell you, IT HURT. If this was 1942 it would be bugs bunny cartoon instead of a video game, portraying hitler as a doofus.
So I suppose because south park had a episode WITH BIN LADEN and south park is a CARTOON they are DEHUMANIZING bin ladin. Well great, even if we have to hunt him down for the next 30 years MY KIDS are gonna grow up thinking bin ladens life is as insignifigant as an insect. And I like that, I want my kids to have no apprehension if they were ever put in a position to kill him. I would praise my child for pulling the trigger on the gun that kills him, I really would.
In closing, I would like to say one more thing, encourage your children to play FPS games, because in the future wars will be fought remote, FPS is a good simulator of that.

I'm not a programmer, i'm a hardware monkey as the developers call me, but I do know the buzzwords they like to hear like it can be compiled with cygwin, flash upgradeable, ect. The neat thing about this is if you have old 72 pin simms laying around they can be used for extra buffer space. I'm not an audiophile, but we're talking MP3 here, needless to say the sound quality is good. You can hook up cheap LCD displays to it (cheap as in 5 to 10 bucks) On top of all that you can add ANY IDE hard drive to it as long as it's formatted fat32. mount -t fat32 /dev/hd2 /mnt/mp3. Both of these I put together ended up in wood
boxes that I sanded, stained and lacquered myself. They are more beautiful
than anything you could buy (deep dark cherry wood color ooooh) The one in my
friends low rider goes well with the rest of the theme of his car.
I'm glad to see slashdot reporting on these types of open source mp3 players, in these hard economic times just walking into fry's and buying what you want is no longer a reality.

I do :P
This is gonna sound sick, but I think most of the male population of /. have been through this or they're lying.
Don't you read slashdot everyday? Shame on you if you don't!
Just a few weeks ago there was this article about 3com faceplates. You can consolidate all your phone and data into 1 jack while running just 1 cable run to your rooms. Now if you got money to burn, you might consider one of these babies from Cisco. This is their media convergence server which will combine voice/data/video into something that can run over cat5. A MCS will cut out your need to run separate phone and video lines. Hey want to hire me to set this stuff up? I'm totally jobless right now and could really use the money :)
Good luck on your house!
I'm going to point to this +5 informative post I made before I jump in and flame on Aerie.
Now what the heck are you guys thinking? Cheaper my foot "which it plans to sell for $39 to $49 a month, according to Aaronson" This is the same price metricom had when they first introduced the ricochet service years ago. It was $20 for the ISP and $20 for the modem rental. Wheels in the sky keep turning backwards. (brain fart sorry) Following the link Michael provided I got to this paragraph, " To avoid the $4 to $10 fees Metricom paid on each pole-top transmitter, Aerie is negotiating with municipalities to exchange free service for pole space." This is nothing new, nothing new at all, Metricom had an entire department dedicated to just that purpose called the Right of Way department. When Ricochet was first rolled out in San Jose the same deal was made with the City of San Jose. I think we gave the city like 300 modems and free service in exchange for letting us use their poletops. Just about every city we ever made that deal with TURNED on us eventually. Wanna know something else? They kept the modems too, and continued to leech off of the service.
If Aerie really want's to make headway into the wireless ISP marketplace they need to do more than follow the obviously failed strategy employed by metricom. People will gladly let you put an unsightly pole on top of their house if it means free internet service. That was what metricom did in the beginning to create service area's. If there was a big gaping hole in the network somewhere, and somebody subscibed to the service and wasn't able to get it, metricom would either A. install a poletop, or B. install a wired access point (which was way cool cause it meant a T1 line coming to your house) If the 802.11 networks have proven anything, it's that a grassroots effort for wireless connectivity does work without having to get the city involved at all.
I wish Aerie the best of luck getting the ricochet network back to full operational status again, but if you don't learn from the past you're doomed to repeat it. Try and keep it down to $30@mo if you're really serious about getting subscriptions. $39 to $49? Hell might as well say you're going to charge $40 to $50 a month. Sorry, it was just really insulting to see all this excitement over a one dollar change in price.
Is you can hook a battery up to anything that uses an AC to DC adapter and Voila instant portable. There's been many a time where i've used a battery powered 5 port hub as a cable tester.
Apparently this story was not important enough for slashdot, 21 isn't really a license to troll but hell I say what the fuck, ppl need to find out about this.
... no tcp browser either . now there will be private kali servers still run by people as jay gave some people kali server . u just need to connect to these private servers by ip manually
This is as much info as I could gather at this present moment.
yes today at noon jay came to chat and told us all official kali servers and the tracker are not going to work anymore starting dec 4th. this is the day his isp said service would stop , but who knows the exact time , no one. what does this mean? with no tracker... no servers will show up
( vroos server: server://66.56.41.94:2213. )
look in the help file on how to conenct manually. also visit this site http://kaliservs.dyndns.org/ as it will list other private kali servers by ip . dont worry all is not lost . we will all end up on the same server at some point i hope !!
Also there is a chat log with Jay Cotton confirming this here..

Ransacked?
Attacked? (yes im sure it has)
Blown up?? No????
I've read many of hackers pages that m$.com is the Ultimate challenge. Although some sub sites have been hacked, they've never really managed to kill the front page.
Same thing goes with the campus itself. Bill Gates office was built with 6 foot concrete walls to double as a bomb shelter. It is fully equipped with enough food, water, and electricity to keep it fully self contained for 100 years.

Mr. President, I would not rule out the chance to preserve a nucleus of human

How long would you have to stay down there?

possibly uh... one hundred years.
On finishing his calculations, he pulls the slide rule roughly from his gloved

MUFFLEY
You mean, people could actually stay down there for a hundred years?
STRANGELOVE
It would not be difficult mein Fuhrer! Nuclear reactors could, heh... I'm
sorry. Mr. President. Nuclear reactors could provide power almost
indefinitely. Greenhouses could maintain plantlife. Animals could be bred
and slaughtered. A quick survey would have to be made of all the available
mine sites in the country. But I would guess... that ah, dwelling space
for several hundred thousands of our people could easily be provided.
MUFFLEY
Well I... I would hate to have to decide.. who stays up and.. who goes down.
STRANGELOVE
Well, that would not be necessary Mr. President. It could easily be
accomplished with a computer. And a computer could be set and programmed to
accept factors from youth, health, sexual fertility, intelligence, and a cross
section of necessary skills. Of course it would be absolutely vital that our
top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required
principles of leadership and tradition.

But look here doctor, wouldn't this nucleus of survivors be so grief stricken
and anguished that they'd, well, envy the dead and not want to go on
living?
STRANGELOVE
No sir...
Why doesn't bioware just distribute it via shareware? It worked for doom and wolfenstien. Like a dope dealer, first hit is free, second one is gonna cost ya.
Now the computers are *REALLY* going to look at us as food.
We are the creator.
The creation eats its creator.
Man thats weird.
Remember, they just got a bite from the /. effect.
They're coming to take me away haha!
No joke either, thing had completly crashed to the desktop. Thank god there was no mouse or keyboard attatched. I could imagine the diagnostic control panel could be used for devious things by a person with the right ./mindset to know what to start looking for.
Ah yes, the bill dispenser unit test screen! Click Click Click Click

I read those two names on the top of that very leagal document and could help but to start cracking up. Maybe it's the child in me that likes that childish humor.

You two arguing so much over my post. I got one question AVS, are you unemployed? You seem to smart to be a dumbass, and you have enough time to make all these posts. Which leads me to one conclusion.. You must be an out of work tech worker :) Hey do like I did, your broadband is essential to you as a geek, become a neighborhood ISP and get your own DSL paid for.

Hopefully that subject got some attention.
.edu software vendors has decreased DRAMATICALLY over the years. I know CCC has closed shop here in Sunnyvale, not sure if it was from a lack of sales or rising rent costs. Either way they laid off 3 of my buddies and closed the entire 6 building campus.
.edu software. They will be tied down to one o/s, who probably would try and sneak a way to dictate what the schools use for educational software. (i'm seeing lots of learn to use word, windows, blah classes in my head right now)
.edu distro made to handle this stuff? Is this in the RH equation at all? Emulation would provide the schools a way to never have to worry about their software going obsolete again because the O/S changes every 2 years.
Also the number of quality
So if the M$ deal goes through, schools will be left with less choice for
With RH, I could run wine, I could run any number of mac and IIE emulators out there. If RH is really going to offer support, why not build a
Teaching ghetto kids how to use linux is pretty scary, I can see the number of website defacements on the rise in 15 years if this RH deal goes through.
