I went to their site. They showed a mouse, and it said "buy with 1 click" under it. So I clicked. No, I didn't get my mouse. I got another page saying "sign up for a 1 click account". Wait a minute!
Why PAY for it, anyway? There's a reason everyone has CD burners, you know. And if for some reason I can't get a warez version, I'll put linux on it (I only "need" windows for games, anyway). As for those poor computer-illiterate fools that like microsoft, let them pay for it! why should I care?
you're not getting the whole DOS problem. Denial Of Service happens when you flood a server, and it get's so slow trying to swim through the shit you throw at it that the real requests take ages to be processed (if the server doesn't go down completely). So you can't just ignore them, somehow. You must acknowledge them, even if it's just to see that ou're geting X packets a second from Y IP. So you must look at all the packets. Server busy. DOS.
This is regardless of another problem. define "normal" and "excessive" packet transmission. What about backbones and other large bandwidth connections? are you going to ignore a major router because you get too many packets from it? That's how the internet works...
really! This is the sort of bullshit I would expect to hear from Microsoft, and it might work with the computer-iliterate people that use windows. How many computer-illiterate people do you know running Linux? The engineers working for this company should slap the marketing department, and quick! They're making the company look ridiculous.
Just look at the crap they put on their website: Graphical Linux Needs a Stable GUI
Right out of the distribution box, Linux is just a kernel. If it is going to be used on the desktop or a laptop, it needs a Graphical User Interface. That means a window manager, a desktop manager and an X server as starters. Which window manager, desktop manager and, most important, which X server is chosen will determine the quality and stability of the resulting operating system. Expecially the X server. The X server will be the primary determinant of the Graphical Linux installation stability. Only one X server for Linux offers quality, performance and stability.
Like, hello, duh!! after intalling any modern Linux distro, you get a very nice GUI and Desktop. And, unlike with this crap, as long as you install libs for both KDE and gnome, apps targeted at one will work with the other too.
The server has to know what TNEF is to be able to strip it. TNEF is a microsoft standard, and I don't know what server other than Microsoft's understands it. So the problem is solved if you use Microsoft software otherwise, you'll receive it in TNEF format... and if yo use something else that outlook, you won't be able to read it.
I hope you were trying to be funny...
your OE sends HTML? Holy Bejeezus, this is an article talking about sending email in non-standard formats, and you reply saying your email sends HTML? Get down and give me 20!
I was actually feeing sorry for those people, thinking of how unfair it must be for them to be moving after years of living there. Until I read what the poor victim was saying...
This year alone, about 40,000 people like Sathya who arrived on this special visa and assumed they could settle in America forever will find themselves heading back home, or to Canada, or someplace else they'd rather not be.
Are you saying Canada is the same as China or India or ex communist European countries? well fuck you too, buddy! From many points of view Canada is better than the states. This article makes it sound like it's the worst place to be.
But for the Sathyas, it's too late to lobby. They've already decided to go to Canada, wait it out, decide what to do next. Mostly Sanjay worries about Shraya, his 4-year-old daughter: How will they find a good pediatrician?
I know... I mean, up here in the woods, with the bears and the beavers, good doctors are so hard to find... Thank god for those indian medicine men!
"All that weighs heavy," he says. "I just want to give her a nice, clean house. Now I'll be taking her to a 30- or 40-story condo, where she'll have to take the elevator to get to the park."
I know! I mean, if you're lucky to even FIND a condo! most likely you'll live in a tree, with no central heat or running water! At least the park will only be a jump away. Just watch out for the wild animals and the poisonous Black Widows...
She echoes him back, padding down the steps in her pigtails and sherbet-striped pants and pointing to one of the boxes: "Daddy, we're going to Canada." Then she mumbles something else.
I know, sweetie... such a tragedy... But don't worry, we'll be nice. We'll eat you first.
I tried a few too...
127.0.0.1 is... unknown?? I thought on every system 127.0.0.1 points to itself... ?
bordercontrol.com is in Canada...

why was this post marked as off-topic? The moderation system is so stupid! This thread is about a fuel cell that uses natural gases to make electricity. Some dude mentioned that the use of natural gases ties you to natural resources, so you're not really independed. Some other dude replied and mentioned that biomass such as feces or garbage will produce natural gas when rotting, so it's a way to become "independent". why is it off-topic? at least he wasn't talking about penis birds and what not...
I want free music, dammit! That is what this is all about, isn't it? So why not just admit it?

If they want to win they have to prove to a bunch of old computer-illiterate fools that your patent is shit. You have the patent. You hold the power. They are presumed guilty until they can prove they are innocent.
So come to America! Air-in-a-can might already be patented, but there are countless other things to "invent"... Here's an idea: patent the trading of Pokemon cards! That'll make you rich fast!
Rambus and Microsoft are quite similar actually. I'm sure Slashdotters would still be againsty Microsoft even if they went to court against, let's say, Red Hat and tried legally stopping them instead of competing fairly. (especially if they went to court against red hat:) The point is, both M$ and Rambust have inferior products and instead of designing better products or trying to compete on the market (where they would lose), they bully others into buying their products. Which is why M$ got sued by the DOJ. If Rambus becomes the next M$, they'll probably get sued too.
Although, if Rambust wins, they'll probably destroy the computer industry as it is today. If you don't believe me, check the prices for RDRAM. Here, 256 megs of RDRAM cost as much as a cheap PC (more than 1000$ and more than twice the price for PC133 RAM)
and control. Which RIAA will eventually lose if they allow other ways of distributing songs. Imagine a universe where every joe shmoe could sell MP3s legally on his website and give a portion to the artist. RIAA wouldn't like that very much... ...but they wouldn't be around to bitch about it.
If you are the paranoid kind, then forget about all these problems/features and surf the net anonymously. Use something like freedom from Zero Knowledge. Or use Linux. I find it funny that all the anti-microsoft pro-linux geeks (I put the accent on it because geeks are supposed to be a lot more computer litterate than normal people) are complaining about all the security problems in windows/IE. Stop using them already! Put OpenBSD if you want security. Don't use IE if you don't want to be tracked. Use Netscape or Opera.
Meanwhile, in the real world, I can use my university's website or phone system to check my account balances, get my schedule, my grades, my exam dates etc.
of course, by this I mean on my university's own website, without Campus Pipeline.
I was reading their site and the totally realistic examples they give. Just imagine:
On the average campus . . .
Janet waits in line for 10 minutes to order a copy of her transcript. At the window, she discovers she has an unpaid parking ticket and must clear this up before she can get her transcript. Frustrated, she walks across campus to the parking office, waits in line, pays her ticket and walks back to get her transcript. After another line, she is successful.
Approx. time: 45 min.
clock reads 3:25pm
Oh no, I must get a transcript... I can't wait for them to send it by mail, and I'm too stupid to use the existing web or phone facilities to check my transcripts. I must wait in line with the other dolts. Dooooooh.... Oh no! a parking ticket! Now I must walk 50 miles across campus to pay fine... doooooooooh....
With Campus Pipeline * . ..
Still online, Janet clicks on Academic Services to view a copy of her transcript. She is notified that she has a hold due to an unpaid parking ticket. She enters a credit card number (through Campus Pipeline's secure e-commerce link) and clears her account. She prints out a copy of her transcript and orders an original.
Approx. time: 10 min.
clock reads 12:40pm

I've always wondered how feasable it would be to set up a LARGE virtual network on top of the internet. The problem would be making sure that only trusted people get onto it.
