Actually, I do believe that your website was the location of my very first mp3 file, which if I recall correctly was "Silent all these years". I was pissed too, because I had found a magic treasure trove of songs that I only had time to get 3 or 4 of before I ran afoul of a notice saying that they'd been pulled down for legal reasons. Small interweb thingy, I guess.

Paperless Billing?

Jesus the christ, you guys can react to the most innocuous things with a level of rabidity that really doesn't do a lot to support your opinions.
First, the original question seemed to be asking for personal experience, which Tim_F gave. I know it's hard to figure out, because he used difficult words like "I" and "my" and "me" to indicate personal experiences.
Second, only through willfull misunderstanding could a person read Tim_F's post as a strict, unyielding defese of paperless billing. Nowhere his post do I see where he guaranteed that no one, at any time, could have problems with paperless billing. He did say "your worries are without merit," but that was just taken from the original question in the first place.
In short, personal experience was asked for, and he dared to give it. I suppose he also broke some secret rule that seems to be in effect prohibiting l33t slashdotters from actually answering a goddamn Ask Slashdot with a useful answer, rather than one of a billion recommendations, no matter the subject, that forgetting their idea and building their own open source version would serve them and society much better.
The Low Power initiative, great, idea, right? Well, my friends and I were running a semi-legit radio station with about 3k watts, and it was a nice, professional little setup (my friend has been a radio engineer for 15 years or so). Well, the fuzz came and finally shut us down, so we decided to look into a low power license, and ya know what? all the local allocations had been bought up by one Calvary Chapel. Which would be fine, except for a little clause in the Low Power initiative stating that no company with any other broadcasting concerns could be allowed to license the low power allocations. Calvary Chapel has cable, radio, even a satellite station. So in other words, they've gone and perverted the entire point of LPFM. Yet another kick in the nuts for the little guy. yay.
Do any/actual/scientists work here, or is it just one long game of truth or dare?
I just want to say, great post. i don't have kids, but you still managed to say almost everything I would've personally said. This whole idea is such a crazy mix of Orwell Meets Adolf that I almost want to laugh. And who knows, maybe someone high enough up there really has good intentions about this project, actually wants to help kids. But, give people this kind of power, and it's going to get abused. The Romans knew that... look at my sig, for example. Who will guard the guardians? No one, because the matter in question is simply a bunch of minors, who seem to have no constitutional rights. For the record, I'm not a minor, but I can remember dozens of high-school violations of the First Ammendment alone. It's just disturbing that our greatest resources, kids (yes, even greater than coal:), are played like this, pushed around like chess pawns and then punished when they learn a move other than "straight forward." Wow, I got ranty:)

I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out, (which I don't think anyone else has mentioned, anyway), the basic fact that vinyl (in other words, analog sound) will always be better than digital sound, for the simple reason that you don't get the same distortions with vinyl. Don't believe me? Try it. Listen really closely to a piece of vinyl, then listen to the same thing on cd. It'll probably shock the hell out of you when you hear it. And as for mp3's, they suffer even more from bad sound compared to vinyl, although it does depend somewhat on factors such as (obviously) encoding quality, and (not so obviously) the speed at which it was pulled down. Maybe you 56kers out there notice a few little pops and things in your mp3's... that really tends to cut down if you pull at higher speeds. Don't get me wrong either- I've got tons of (legal:) mp3's, most of which were pulled at none other than 56k, and I love them. But the facts are there. Anyway, I thought these were some interesting points:) So, rambling aside, vinyl will never die because if you want crystal clear, you go with vinyl. Not to mention, it's fairly hard to scratch a dual cd deck by hand =)

What an interesting little bit of bad news for, well, everyone... Why do people make idiotic decisions like this? I think I'll go out and patent the cd player, now; that should be worth a chunk of change.
believe me on this one. Death is something that comes fairly quickly, and once done, is done for good. Rape is the gift that keeps on giving... you live with that your entire life. Hell can happen in life even easier than in death.
when you could simply read something else, and get on with your life? I've heard a lot of stupid crap about "he's not one of us"... what exactly does that mean? How are we going to legitimately insult a guy because he's not part of 'our' group? After all, this isn't high school anymore... Just because Jon Katz doesn't sit at out caffeteria table, there's no reason to post flame after flame, saying what a waste of time HE is. And remember.../. is for us, but it's the baby of Rob Malda. If you don't like it, don't read it, but don't start whining about how it's not good enough. If he wants to help out Katz, just ignore it if you feel the need.

12 stringers are very very sweet... good luck with it. =)
is a huge difference.
It's really amazing how much cooler the trailer was with dolby digital sound and a huge ass screen. the place shook at times. =)
