  1. Re:Linking ID to Hardware on Graphics Cards: the Future of Online Authentication? · · Score: 1

Not necessarily. Think about the implication of the hardware acting as a "something you have" token in two-factor authentication. Today, a common implementation is to prompt for additional information or receive an email/text to confirm identity before setting a cookie to allow the particular device to be recognized.

Doing the same with a unique profile of the hardware would allow that device to permanently exist as one part of two-factor authentication, with a password being the other piece. This would--by far--be the most common use case. A friend borrowing your computer? They could log into their account with a simple email/text verification (a la Facebook) and their standard credentials. But since you've already tied that hardware to your account, you get to skip that step.

It needn't be all doom & gloom. There are practical applications.

To hire an extra worker for those extra hours means spending more money, something that does not align with the capitalistic goal of earning as much as possible.

Just because you can't see the argument for a single bag doesn't mean that there isn't one. For example, when I recently traveled to Peru, I rarely let my backpack out of sight—I didn't random hostels enough to leave thousands of dollars of equipment there, nor did I have a vehicle. That said, I did very well with a single piece of luggage, the Calumet BP1500 Large Backpack. It fit my 13" Macbook Air (with plenty of room for a larger laptop), my DSLR with a couple lenses and requisite accessories, in addition to clothes and whatever else I needed to survive for 10 days. All with enough space to bring back souvenirs.

The simplicity of a single bag was a boon when cramming myself into a taxi colectivo for 2 hours with a dozen strangers. Honestly, I'm not sure there would have been room for extra luggage.

As for the author's request, most details can be found on the product page, but in my opinion, the best part of that bag was having a hip belt to take the admittedly heavy load off my shoulders while hiking.

From there, configure Apache for multiple vhosts and you're all set.

The downside is that ultimately, yo're responsible. The upside is that they don't touch your stuff and are expandable nearly instantly

Although I recognize that my views are more closely aligned with the Democratic party, I am a free-thinking individual and thought I should bring up a few points:

According to TFA, the issue [of available broadband] doesn't seem to be tied to any particular agenda.
"We also believe that the nationwide deployment of high speed, always-on broadband and Internet and mobile communications will fuel the development of millions of new jobs in the United States," Pelosi said.
How in the hell does broadband mean more jobs unless we're assuming there will be a large shift towards telecommuting?

Further, since "creating new jobs" is always an agenda of both major politcal parties, any actual effect that broadband would have would not be recognized as a Democratic contribution. Rather, it may be attributed to his highness, King Bush Jr. and the Republican-controlled government since they are the ones in office right now.

In fact, it almost sounds like the Democrats may be trying to ride the wave of potential good fortune. Think about this: "We said there would be more jobs with an increase in broadband availability. See the more jobs? We did that with our push for more broadband." It's a given that broadband will continue to see an increased number of total users. It's also expected that the number of jobs will continue to rise (note that I didn't say employment rate here, but gross employment; since the number of people consuming resources continues to climb, so will our need to satisfy those allocations in product and services industries).

Most importantly, I would hope that no one - Democrat, Republican, or otherwise - would expect a broad statement about broadband and jobs would help win an election. Until people learn to not vote based on religion (think abortion issues), most of these statements/promises/whatever will have little effect.

    Flame on.
  24. Re:MMO effect? on February Game Sales Flop · · Score: 3, Interesting

Even prescribing to your suggestion of 5%, that's still a significant amount amount of revenue a company could lose out one. Let's do a little math:

WoW active subscriber base: 6 million
    Percent of hardcore players: 5%
    Total active hardcore players: 300,000
Cost of a game: $40 (this is very conservative)
Total potential lost revenue: $12 million

If we increase the cost of a game to $50 (a much more realistic amount), the revenue jumps to $15 million. However, I don't think the cost of a game is really a variable here. I think the real problem lies in the 5% assumption. While this may be accurate for those that are hardcore players (and do not much else), another very large subset of players falls into the "doesn't play much else" category: casuals. Why? Becasue they're casual. They only play an hour or two each night, maybe not every night. This is typically because they have additional real life obligations. This would suggest they don't have time to play yet another video game.

I think the percentage of World of Warcraft players that don't play other games on a regular basis is much higher than 5%.
