The idea is taht there are numerous ads placed around china on little cards that have people's phone numbers on them. they are illegial, but probably only the equivilient of a class c misdemeanour in america. However, they are becoming quite an eyesore. So in order to fix the problem, they are goign to enter in the phone numbers into a database, and have computers call them and leave a message once every 20 seconds asking them to turn themselves in. this will force them to eithier 1) turn themselves in to get the cops to stop calling them, or 2) get a new number, which involves cancelling thier current cell phone contract, since its now useless.Hopefully it will put an end to all the ads.
I'm sorry, despite how much you want to be, you are not a victim of your enviroment. My early life was very similiar to yours, except I was always the biggest kid in my class, which meant no bullying because I could kick all thier asses. But none the less, I was a geek to the core. I had no friends, except teh occasional other geek who was just as badly off as I was.
For many years, up through high school I blamed my parents. Then, about my Jr year of high school I realized I COULD change, and I didn't have to let what had happened to me affect me. I learned how to dress by watching other people, I even asked people for tips on haircuts. I studied other people's social interactions with the same scientific method that I would apply my biology class. By my senior year, I had turned around quite a bit. I had an abundance of friends who genuinely liked me for the first time, and by my senior year, even the popular kids said things like "you used to be such a geek...", All that, and I still managed to make a 5 on the Calculus BC and Physics AP tests.
Its now my freshman year in college, I am still socially inadequate on many levels, and i'm still quite shy guy, but I realized you dont have to simply accept whats handed to you. You do have the choice to change, even now. Do not blame your parents, I tried it, it doesnt work. Dont regret who you are, or who you were. Make a decision to be yourself, enjoy life, and dont worry about others. Most importantly, dont judge other people, especially if they are more socially competant than you, it will only bite you in the but later.
Alot of people in this thread have said alot of things I agree with. The only thing that seperates a geek from a non-geek is thier social skills. In the end, you getting picked on was your fault, and you can't escape that. Forgive your parents for what they did, accept who you are, and make change, and you will enjoy life alot more.
I want to call my girfriend, I hit "2", and then the big button above it. It doesnt get any easier than that.

RIAA to Sue You Now

Seriously, with a 5 minute investment I can hear almost any band in the world by simply picking one I've never heard out of someone else's directory.
this is exactly why the RIAA is doing this. A few years ago the RIAA controled the distrubution of pretty much all music. Now, anyone anywhere can find anything they want to. Since people now have other ways of finding good music they like, they can explore other artists, on smaller record labels.
I would be very interested in seeing a study done on how the sales of independant artists and smaller record labels have been affected by p2p sharing. I bet they have gone up... by quite alot. I for one, have over the past few years, become quite interested in Techno/Electronica, and through AG and Napster, have managed to amass a collectiong of over 50 gigs worth, of which all but about 12 gigs are livesets, which are not avaliable for sell in cd shops anyway. As for the other 12 gigs of music, well, I have a record (not cd) collecion in the thousands, and a decent number of cd's, and I garuntee you not one cent of my money has gone to the RIAA. Most of the music I have is actually rips of records I have, or songs from the same artists.
I am the type of person that the RIAA fears. I have other interests now, and I can find a wide variety of music I like, AND test it out before I get it. In short, its not about sales, but control. The riaa can't get away with putting out total shit all the time anymore.

The TI-86 has a really good bug that lets you take the factorial of a decmil number, and gives you a result that as far as I can tell is random since i've spend quite alot of class time trying to reproduce the answers it gives, and failing miserably.
I am a music fan, specifically a major Electronica freak/trance head. I've read the forums on AG, and some websites like tranceaddict.com and have downloaded quite alot of trance and other electronica. My cd collection has also changed dramatically. Since most electronica artists are small scale, and dont release on major record labels, the RIAA has recieved absolutely ZERO from me, yet, I have a much larger music collection than I did two years ago. So what does this mean? Perhaps the reason the RIAA is losing money is because the record sells are actually going to smaller scale, newly discovered aritsts, instead of britney spears and n'sync. So yes, it is quite feasable this was an attempt by the RIAA to prevent people from discovering lesser known artists.
The thing is, It the four year staying period is just a fluke. If i created my own personal file p2p file transfer program, and only had a tiny following, it would stay under the RIAA's radar, but now that the RIAA is looking for it, they will go after ANYONE who appears to have even a medium sized following. Kazaa will fall shortly as well, especially since all the old AG people are going to be flocking to it. giFT and gnutella are great simply because they are decentralized, however, if the RIAA percieves it as a threat, even the head developers, and SF as well, minght find cease and dissest letter on thier doorsteps.
Of course, very soon another alternative will show up, with terrabytes of music again, and shortly after it will sued, shut down, and the cycle will repeat itself. But anything that has anything resembling a threat will go down the hole shortly after.
My dad once worked for the Las Alamos national labs, and they woudl send out trucks full of nuclear waste. The semis had solid rubber tires (make for a bumpy ride) bullet proof windows, etc, and they were escorted by two black suburbans, full of people armed to teh teeth.
One day a cop pulled the semi over. in under a minute, he was surrounded by men in black holding sub machine guns pointed at his head.
talk about a bad day at work.
I followed the 2.4 kernel test releases for a long while now
I kept updating whenever they came out, and to tell you the truth, After test 8 they started sucking ass. They got less stable. Test 9 kept randomly killing random processes, and test 10 wouldn't even boot on my firends machine, so I gave up. I dont know if they fixed this problem but according to my friend it is a result of trying out different scheduling systems. I jsut hope they get all the bugs out by now.
Boeing's planned approach is to send operator commands (via a satellite or a relay aircraft outside the combat zone) to a single aircraft in the swarm.
imagine, one lucky missle and the whole fleet turns into one giant garbage heap! Take out the controlling aircraft and they all turn into falling tin cans.
He put a red light it in, but didnt know what RF was. It looked really cool but didnt work very well. Whenever he turned it on he monitor started flickering and had many other problems after a while, then he brought it to a lan party, he had about 10 people stop to tell him how stupid he was for putting it in, he hasnt turned it on since =)

Thomas jefferson didnt want universal manhood sufferage because he was afraid that the uneducated, illiterate, mob could tooo easily be controled.
I have now come to teh conclusion that he was not only right, but that the overeducated masses can just as easily be controlled. In case no one noticed, the linux.com mainpage had this article and clearly states its a satire. Yet, many people still believe that it has some credibility to it, or are giving reasons to why it is probably a fake.
Back in world war two the Nazi's came up with this ingenious encryption system that the allies couldn't break called Enigma. Go find one of these old enigma devices and encrypt everything you do on it. Then write it down with pencil and paper or type it in an old typewriter. Put this in a bank vault that is locked at night. So if someone does manage to steal teh papers the will ahve to go find another Enigma device to decrypt it!
I just use my dad's work laptop and a simple X server to export the display over the network. This works great, and I can do almost everythign I could do it I was on the terminal. So if you want to play on your conputer from afar, IMHO this is the best option
Actually I bet that M$ is in the process of porting most of thier stuff to linux right now. However they will not release it until it becomes so obvious that they have no hope of grinding out linux that they have no choice to explore other avenues. However, fat chance that M$ would actually release the source =(
Bill gates might be arrogant, greedy, and have a ego the size of Washington, but he isn't stupid. He knows that someday it will be a big enough threat that he will ahve to release linux versions of MS software.
Shure KDE2 looks Great, but just like KDE it will probably be much slower than other windows managers, say FVWM95. I recently switched from kde to 95 a few months ago and I noticed a BIG speed difference. Also, All those problems with Netscape locking up went away. And overall everything ran much faster. People like Bloatware but a slow Windows Manager will always suck.
No matter how careful you are (and I am pretty damn careful) they scratch like buggery, and are generally useless after 5 years
i'm sorry, but I dont aggree with this. CD's are incredibly durable (dont believe me, try taking a 9mm to one, shure it doesnt work, but look at how much is left, it's quite amazing, really) and i've scratched an aol cd up sooo much once that it wasnt even reflective once, and It installed, completely, without any problems. but it still work perfectly. CD's are truely amazing pieces of technology and I have a feeling that they will keep just as long, if not longer than vynl.
I am far from rich, but I still have a very large music collection. I use napster alot, but I can get entire albumns from friends alot easier (I have about five gigs of mp3's in a collection of 30 over 30 albumns). The strange thing is, even though my friend might give me the cd in mp3's, and I have a burner, I still end up buying the cd. Most of you woulnd't understand, but theres usually more to a cd than the music. Some cd's (like tool's undertow) artwork is worth 10 bucks by its self. For those of you who do nothing but download and pirate music, try buying the cd's of bands/songs you like. Once you get a large enough music collection, then tell me it's honestly not worth is to buy the cds.

Don't worry, the only thing I fear is your ego.

IMHO, the best Anime series is Serial Expiraments: Lain.
