Good god, this guy rules. If I had any moderator points I'd mod him up. Supports my belief that it takes more imagination to come up with a moderate solution than an extreme one.
So brilliant that even they can't come up with a decent music distro scheme? And no bob, giving it away for free doesn't make anyone money, no matter how many banner ads you put on the player. As always the moderate compromise is the one that takes greater imagination and harder work, something noone's got or willing to give.
I love this guy... he's been on here several times now making this case. I laregely agree with him, and it's interesting to see his debate grow. TV's never really had any good "superhero" shows, that didn't feel they had to wrap themselves in simile and context. I'd love to see one of comicdom's best properties turned into an unabashed exploration of super hero themes AS A SUPER HERO SHOW!!!!
Rail against this guy all you want, he's right. The GBA was available to test in toystores across the nation weeks before it's release. Even in the overexposed light at the local Toy's R US, I could tell that the GBA wasn't going to live up to my expectations. Did that stop me from buying it? Hell No. That shit still works.
Did anyone honestly believe they were going to be able to play in a poorly lit church while Octopi and a WWF choir stood in attendence? I think not, if so though, you are all more easily manipulated than I thought. Finding a new backlight system is a great idea... his "portable monopoly" has always been a sour pill for me. NOONE us forcing any of you to buy the bloody system. If Nintendo wants to put out a questionable product that's their prerogative.
BTW... video game companies have been pulling this shit for years. Even the earliest arcade/atari products came shipped in boxes featuring artwork that only the newest systems in THIS decade could emulate. False advertising or attractive packaging? Well, I for one can speak to the frustration I feel whenever I see a gorgeous packaging job, but know the game's gfx don't come close... chew on that..

Garments of fire have been prepared for the unbelievers. Scalding water shall be poured upon their heads, melting their skins and that which is in their bellies. They shall be lashed rods of iron. Whenever, in their anguish, they try to escape from Hell, back they shall be dragged, and will be told: 'Taste the torment of the Conflagration!'

Solution? Educate people, castigate not their lack of l33t skillz. You may find you have more friends, less ulcers and more ICQ numbers of hot babes. Yes, it takes smart people to make the worst mistakes, but you're never going to avoid this... even with all the playground names at your disposal.
This isn't an issue of cultural superiority. It's an issue of:
-Personal preference (which I sought to share)
-Actual quality (Bebop's dubbing is far superior than most American anime dubs AND the japanese version of bebop)
It just so happens that the dub WAS sanctioned by the creator, and I didn't say that SPIKE had the same voice actors, but that there were several other charactors who did. David Lucas has worked on several other american dubs and (along with the other voice actors) nails Spike (hee) better than the Japanese. It's unreasonable to think that no dub could possibly do anime justice, that's simply pretentious. Yes, I got irritated in the previous post. I'm rather quick to defend Bebop's dubbing, because I consider it the superior version. Again, it is possible (though your thick wee brain seems unable to pick up on the point) that a film's original take is not always the superior.
BTW, your "friend" may have done a decent job translating for the subtitles, but it's the American voice actors that REALLY brought the film alive for millions of fans. If you'd like anime to be taken more seriously, you've gotta understand 2 things. 90% of anime out there is crap (Yuna, DBZ anyone?), the 10% that's left deals with thematic strains that communicate across all cultural boundaries. I can get into the bad donburi jokes with the best of them, but the themes mean JACK to the rest of the world.
Even the most diehard of anime anti-dub fans must admit: Bebop's english dub is far superior to the japanese. The voices match the characters better than has been achevied before. This isnt' some kind of cultural limitation of mine either. It's considered the ONLY way to watch the film.
Who complains about FMV's? No they don't make for spellbinding GAMEPLAY, but they do add a cinematic element that's beyond currently acheivable interactivity. The FF games have had some of the best FMV's ever, they're used to introduce characters, illustrate important key events and give more atmosphere than can be acheived in the bitmap backgrounds or the polygonal character models. Most of the action in the FMV's consist of actions that the user would have NO control over, like catching someone's fall, mourning someone's death, looking lovingly into someone's eyes, Or would you rather those were minigames?

I visted and posted to the site before it was/.-ed. He proposes that the GBA's lack of backlight is the result of Nintendo's monopoly of the hand-held gaming market. While it's obvious that there aren't many competitors for the same market here in the US, this is not so in Japan where even cell-phone games have garnered widespread popularity recently, and old platforms like the Swan have held a decent market niche for a while.
Nintendo's been very clear about why they left out backlight support (battery life, duh) and as a believer in the market forces, I'm marginally impressed (they don't all work too well) with how many solutions third party companies have come up with for this problem. The consumer isn't really being too put apon at $90 a system. I mean it's BYOL (bring your own light, for the acronymically challenged), the GBC was too.
Creating business for a third party is not really the actions of a monopoly is it?
To top that off, it takes a modicum of observation to realize that Nintendo is not at the top of the heap in the consol wars, and hasn't been for a while now. How does this constitute a monopoly?
Is this guy just doin' the/. kneejerk dance or...?
Stephenson's nano world wasn't a nice place where a boy and his nanite played in green fields and chased butterflies. It was a world crappier by far because of the destruction rendered by nanites so thick they filled the air, killed by chaning your blood chemistry, and shut down your nervous system in moments. I'm not saying this isn't a great discovery, but Stepenson's tale of caution should be used to highlight a darker potential...
Nob... I hope you're just kidding. Nary a bloody thing is cribbed from Gibson. Not the tone, feel, pace, setting, tech, details, NOTHING...
Such nobbery...

The English dub rox. I can't say it enough. The actors nail the characters on the head far better than their japanese counterparts... so there

I mentioned it! To myself.... in my head...
I agree they know what they're doing, and yes they've sold more units than God, but does that make them a monopoly?
