despite the onboard graphics, sound, usb, firewire, NIC, wireless, etc. I still see matrox and 3dlabs selling video cards, creative selling sound cards, 3Com selling NICs, and on, and on, and on...

fact is, since the hardware side is based on well documented, open standars (PCI, USB, Firewire, ethernet, etc.) and the level of interoperability is high, replacing the onboard stuff by add-on parts is as easy as opening the case and sloting a card or simply pluging in a serial device.

now, MS Office apps relies heavily on internet explorer to render HTML, even the controll pannel needs IE to work. wipe IE and all it's acompanying DLLs and the system breaks badly.

show me a way to fully replace IE as the system's defacto HTML renderer by gecko, KHTML or opera in such a way that every aplication that embeds a browser to display hypertext recognizes and accepts the alternatives and i won't mind with MS's bundles.

That's the whole point. iTunes essentially *is* your filesystem. Your standard tree-based filesystem is really poor for managing songs (quick, find that one Beatles song, oh, which album is it on again?).

on his directory structure all he need is

    #find <mp3 directory> -iname "*beatles*"

and find will give him the list of beatles songs whith the directory structure prepended (which contains the album name).

in windows he can use , and to have the benefif of the windows indexing service for a fast search, follow this arcticle

a computer program with fixed rules will never be as smart or clever as a human nor will it fit all persons. i tried myself using a "jukebox" to manage my songs, but im back to a well organized sub-directory structure/manual, descriptive file naming/carefully created playlists. works much better tha any program i tried.

all you need to do this is take some time to fine tune the interface. deactivate all eye candy, remove wallpapers, turn off all background apps ("services" in MS speak), adjust kernel parameters, et all.

in windows XP is possible to tune the interface this way in one go via "my computer" preferences. what MS should do is to put a "wizard" in the installation media or control pannel to do this automatically. KDE has this wizard and it runs everytime a new user logs in. it have a slidebar where the user adjusts for more performance or more eye-candy.

in your post you mention school bus, semi, train... dunno in US. with their gas guzzling culture they may even use gasoline for massive vehicles, but here in brasil we use diesel for such things. its waaaay more efficient AND economical than gasoline. unfortunatelly our legislation only allows jeeps, SUVs and trucks to use diesel. for the rest of us theres alcohool (less efficient but more economical) and natural gas (even more economical than diesel) and not-so-good ol gasoline. some cars accept all three at the same time.

a decently adapted car can run on natural gas cheaper than a light motorcicle. a V6 ford ranger makes 250 km on R$ 30,00 of natural gas, a small 1.5l car will do the same distance with nearly R$ 15,00, while my motorcicle does only 200 km with the same money. PLUS: natural gas polution is negligible.

gotta love a country where a regular car can be fueled with 3 kinds of fuel AT THE SAME TIME (gasoline and alcohool mix in the tank + natural gas in the extra cilinders) ^_^

my statio wagon is a 1200 kg volkswagen parati with a 1800cc engine produces 90 hp and at 80 km/h it does... 12 km/l.

an engine 14 times bigger only needs twice the fuel to move a car 7 times the weight of the motorcicle.

things get worse as the motorcicle engine gets bigger. a honda CB-400 with a 400cc engine does 15 km/l a CBR-7500 spends more than my car.
