  1. Re:From the article on A First Look At The GIMP 2.0 · · Score: 1

This is not "some random thing." The developers are claiming that GIMP runs on OS X without (apparently) really understanding what they're saying. Until I can install GIMP by dragging one file to my Applications folder, and run it without installing the optional X11 package, GIMP is not a proper Mac application. I presume the original poster wouldn't be complaining if the developers hadn't made the technically correct but still dubious claim that GIMP runs on Mac OS X.

A lot of apps have dependencies. Just because some of them don't package all of them into a nice install doesn't mean you need to get your panties in a bind.

A typical Mac user will get their panties in a bind over this. Macs are about consistency and simplicity; they are not about chasing dependencies that the developer was too lazy to include in the installer. There is an installer, right? Or better yet, a single application bundle that the user can simply drag to their Applications folder? No? Then this is not a proper Mac program, and saying it "runs in Mac OS X" is technically correct but mildly deceitful.

You're missing the point. The highest priority in interface design on the Mac is fitting in. When you code for the Mac, your application must look and feel like other Mac programs. If it doesn't, then you've created an app that technically "runs in Mac OS X" but is by no means a proper Mac application. Normal users will be confused at best, disgusted and annoyed at worst. Pass judgment if you like, but that's the way it is.

Mac programs are held to certain standard, and running on X doesn't cut it.

Your comparison of men and women's physical abilities leaves out two key advantages that women have, so I thought I'd point them out for the sake of fairness: endurance and longevity. Women tend to live longer than men, and they can physically exert themselves for longer periods. All else being equal, in a long-distance race between a man and a woman, the woman will win.

There's an aircraft instrument called an automatic direction finder (ADF). It's just a circular compass card with a rotating arrow on it, and the arrow points in the direction of whatever radio beacon is tuned in. That is, unless you're near a thunderstorm -- in which case it points in the direction of lightning strikes! Most ADF's can be tuned to anything in the 190-1750 kHz band, so maybe your garage door's frequency is in there somewhere.

Where do you think the CG of a typical airliner craft is?

Your comparison of airliners to hang gliders is misguided at best, and completely ignorant at worst. An airliner is not even remotely similar to this aircraft, least of all in terms of how they achieve stability. An airplane with wings and a tail is a lever, with the wings situated just behind the fulcrum/CG. The wings produce an upward force, and the tail produces a downward force. These two forces balance each other to stabilize the aircraft about its lateral axis. A flying wing, such as the aircraft featured here, has no tail to counteract the upward force produced by the wings. It relies on pendulum action to stabilize itself. With the center of gravity above the center of lift, this aircraft will exhibit negative dynamic stability.

I believe there is a 150% safety factor built into these numbers as well, so a utility category airplane (such as a Cessna 172, when loaded properly) must be able to actually withstand +6.6g -3.3g. Now, bear in mind that the real-life numbers match the book when the plane rolls of the assembly line, and decrease with age. You sure as hell won't catch me pushing a '77 Skyhawk to its design limits.
