I was shopping for gifts for the younger tikes in my family at Toys R Us and I was lamenting that they didn't have the legos I grew up with. I played with those things for hours and hours until I hit the 'teens. Like many people here, I attribute some of my exercised creativity and engineering acumen to that toy. I want the same for my family's offspring. I couldn't see how a star wars or harry potter set would give a kid enough generic stuff to build what they wanted to build.
I'm so happy lego made this decision that I went to their website to write them a thank you note. Having to register, I used my ubiquitous spoonyfork handle and it wouldn't let me because Username cannot contain 'poo'.. Right.:/
Islamic Shari'ah Law forbids paying and charging interest. If they had invested according to Shari'ah Law this wouldn't have been a problem. Check out some alternatives to this type of investing at iHilal Financial Services.
... and it resulted in dozens of nonlocal comments and e-mails.
... Several readers from Europe -- who apparently missed the fact that the column was written for a general interest newspaper in Houston, Texas, USA -- complained my list had a "North American" bias.
Could you define nonlocal please? You're posting copy on a website viewable by the public internet. Is the internet nonlocal to you? Or is this just another Texas-is-the-center-of-the-planet things?
I guess that you would be comfortable if your loved one was killed by a car driven by a drunk driver? No? How about being gutted by some crack-addict with a broken glass bottle? No? Didn't think so.
No, you're right it wouldn't be any more comfortable. The difference is, those objects (cars, bottles) weren't designed, developed, manufactured, and sold for the expressed intent of killing people. It is hard to distinguish the actor from the object in that context. Nay, it is impossible. Yes, guns are evil. Gun manufactures profit from death. Only the devil himself gets a better return on that investment. Those that support the continuation of the deathtrade are of questionable morality and character. Moreover, I question their allegiance to God and humanity.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You?... I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom.... You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
... I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn...
Perhaps if we all grabbed a beer instead of a gun we'd all get along better.
It's funny that you would have goatse.cx in your sig with your post. It reminds me of something that I did last year.
The bullies in my school happened to be the jock/prep/student government clique. They put together a 10 year reunion website to organize and collect contact info. Unfortunately the guy who put it up had no clue how to run a site. After snagging all of the contact info for spam fodder I simply redirected pages to a google cache article of a news story on the girl who drugged a teacher our senior year.
After they "fixed" that and chastised the "hacker" for being childish (which I fully admit I was) I then had all traffic redirected to goatse.cx. Yum. Let that imagine burn in your mind forever, chums.
Yeah, me too. I've been here before. I've been in denial about Highlander for several years now. After seeing the so-called sequel I wanted to gouge my eyes out. It was eerily familiar to how I felt after Reloaded left a soiled condom in my behind.
I wish I was you. I feel like I got rooked into seeing the 2nd film instead of waiting the requisite week after openning. No way am I going to fall for the 3rd. You lucky bastard.
The problem came when precinct workers tried to electronically send results from the 953 new machines to election headquarters, unexpectedly overloading computer servers.
At my job in a very small corner of the world we spend a fair amount of time in code review, quality testing, and load testing. How is something so incredibly important that people DIE for it be implemented so carelessly?
It rattles my soul and bones that my relatives died for people's freedom very much including the right to vote and it is being handled repeatedly so carelessly (intentionally or otherwise). The people running these elections better step up or I'm going to what my forebears did, and step up.
Thousands of Iraqis have died for the right to vote--because Americans thought they needed it, and were willing to kill them for it.
Great quote. I wish it could fit in my.sig here. If I had mod points I'd send it up. Cheers.

So why are Republicans radio shows "shill"? Because you disagree?
Conservative radio shows are shills because they are paid to lie and obfuscate with propaganda and misinformation. We decry when other countries who control the media do it. Why shouldn't we decry it when special political interests and Big Money get to do it in the US?
And why is it that my tax dollars fund liberal radio when you aren't forced to pay taxes to fund conservative radio?
If you are referring to liberal radio as public radio then the single largest contribution to public radio in the US doesn't come from taxes, in fact a very small portion does. The largest contribution comes from donations by individuals and corporate sponsors during pledge drives. If you don't like how your tax dollars are spent then vote accordingly like everyone else does.
I have every confidence that that I just wrote will fall on deaf ears because "you disagree". That's cool, I don't really care what you think anyway because what you think doesn't matter. HAND
I feel bad for the guy that he lost his job but were I his manager, I would have done the same thing. He was not shafted, he was not unfairly treated. Posting internal information like that however inoccuous could damage competitiveness. Let's forget about Microsoft's overall stance on competitiveness for a minute. People where I work have been summarily dismissed for taking and publishing photographs of R&D related objects.
If you didn't own a TV and care what crap is smeared on it then this would be a non-issue. Turn off your TV and go live in the real world.
... or at least end up spending more time on the 'net:/

Hey, I'm one of the millions that listen to NPR during the day, mostly to and from work.
In case you weren't affected by the GREAT FEARSOME BLACKOUT OF 2003, those of us who were crowded around radios to get news.
Don't forget the 20 million so-called "dittoheads" that hang on Rush's every word every day. Republican shill talk radio has never been so popular (depending on where you read your stats).
There's big money in radio and the guy who owns it is raking it in.
If every woman on the planet were to suddenly die, what reason would there be to stay in good shape? I'd be a fat slob if not for women.
I think you just did an excellent job of underscoring the abundance issue as illustrated by de Jager but from the other direction. Interesting how it can work both ways, no?
It does not have "Do you want fries with that?" in the vocabulary though."
Why would that need to be in the vocabulary? If they are going to replace the drone on the other side of the speaker it would need to recognize the response to that question, not the other way around.
Well, stop bombing people would be a good start.
I am the bomber robot. We are here to protect you. Bombing you will protect you from the terrible secret of space.

Perhaps Bush could get some cheap Russian rockets and have some outsourced Indians fly them around for pennies on the dollar. USA! USA! USA!

The purpose of licensing guns is as a first step to confiscation.
God forbid should anyone you love be killed during a crime involving a gun. Will your paranoia save the life of someone you love?
