  1. Re:More Craziness on Software Patents Circumvent European Parliament · · Score: 1

    In fact the government is saying they they can vote 'yes' because, as they say, the current proposal does not allow for software patents.

    The position of the dutch government on software is schizofrenic. At one side they support big companies by voting support for software patents and secretly(!) arranging 5 year contract with Microsoft despite a law ordering big contracts to fulfilled after requesting prices at various vendors and a motion ordering goverment to buy _only_ free software after 2006.

    On the other hand , aformentioned motion is in place, but is being ignored, a goverment institution with very little funds is supposed to promote free software and recently a European symposium on free software was organised.

    In toto, the government does more against than for free software.

    Here is the position of the VVD on software patents. Basically what it says is that they are strongly against softwarepatents but support the current proposal, because it does not, according to their minister Brinkhorst, allow for the patenting of software as such. This is completely naive, but a necessary statement the party needs to avoid intern inconsistency. Basically, what they are saying and what they are doing is not the same.

    Isn't that a bit overkill. Surely there's a way to connect a simple traditional speedometer, where a magnet on your spoke flies past sensor on your fork, to a chip with a couple of kb of memory. Basically all the system would need to do is to store the time between subsequent ticks.

    Seriously, does someone have a cool speedometer on his bike that stores a distance vs. time data on a convenient storage medium, e.g. usb-stick or memory card?

    Of course extra data like, inclination vs. time would be a cool addition for the extreme mountain bikers, as well as heart-beat and body temperature.

    I bought the book mainly because of the windows version of the library. There are four versions of the library on the CD:
    • Qt for Borland C++ Builder 5
    • Qt for Borland C++ Builder 6 trial edition
    • Qt for Visual C++ 6
    • Qt for Visual C++ .NET

    I've ported my app cubetest to windows with the Builder 5 compiler. This compiler is however very old and the debugger works in DOS. That's not really a problem if the app would work well. Unfortunately, on other computers than my own the app seems to crash quite often even though I've thoroughly checked floating point errors and memory problems under linux.

    So I'd like to use a better compiler and debugger under windows, to get the last problems out. Are there any other free compilers that could work with the Qt versions supplied on the CD? It would be ok to use a Microsoft compiler, since I'm porting to windows anyway.

    PS: irritating feature of Windows XP, if my app crashes, XP offers to send it to Microsoft for debugging!

    I'm not claiming that the textbox should be depricated. It's good. The added helpful suggestion is nice and I like it too. I like the tab key as well. I also like typing an absolute path and using the tab key there or receiving a suggestion would be nice. I don't know about Gnome, but KDE does not have it. It be a nice addition.

    The average user will not type absolute paths often because he will have to always start with '/home/username/', which is a nuisance.

    Mistaking the cursur keys for the enter key is something I've never done. It might be an issue on laptops, but not on ones I've used. Usuually, there's a warning dialog before overwrite a file in a file selector.

    I have made mistakes using the tab key by simply not paying enough attention to the suggestion or how far the completion went.

  25. Re:too complex on The State Of The GTK+ File Selector · · Score: 1

    The KDE file selector has all these:

    * Saving favorite locations is an add-on feature for a lot of file selectors. This is easy to add, and might be worth considering. This is not GNOME-specific.

    Just drag your favourite location to the side-bar in the file selector. A new icon representing the favourite appears. It can be removed with it's context menu.
    In addition to this there's a bookmarks button, but that's really redunant now because of the sidebar.

    * Showing the last N locations used with this app or globally might be a nice (potentially optional, for privacy reasons) feature.

    The top of the file selector has a combobox containing the current path. Openinging it shows 10 often/recently accesed directories.

    Even better than tab comletion, KDE shows a list of matching names. The top one can be chosen by pressing enter. The arrow keys and subsequent enter choose another matching name.

    The file dialog is not perfect, but it's quite close. What would be nice is tooltips showing key shortcuts for all buttons.
