The detail of information they are gathering now would make Schroedinger need a nap. Sure burning hydrogenated carbon to release energy is an "old" technology. But in case you haven't noticed the world is still grappling with a better way to store energy. You need energy to research energy. If you are suggesting that they should only be powered by a 60 year old nuclear power plant or some other "futuristic" power source then you are putting some really bizarre and nonsensical restrictions on physics research.
Wouldn't you want to arm yourself? Maybe even hire a few guns for the ride? Maybe even get the crew some target practice? Don't captains have some say in protecting their crew/cargo?
Does anyone have a post to the corresponding story where the D.A. takes some police officers to bust the slave camp up? You know, where people rush up to him and yell "we are free! finally someone to set us free!". Hasn't that happened yet? No?!?! You mean they are just going to let the slaves who haven't escaped rot in there? Oh, the humanity
Now I know why some simple development tasks and interfacing become so convoluted and unmanageable at my work, some of you negative nannies probably work here! I've been using JS + DOM + JSON + other junk for some cool browser stuff for a few years now and no, it's not perfect. And yes, it had gotten better. Debugging is not friendly, but to a programmer that knows how to modularize and reuse code (any of those here?) it's not hard to isolate a problem.
I don't like browser inconsistencies, who does? I wish everyone would at least follow W3 html box model. There's so many things I wish, but it's easy to use and can do some interesting stuff in almost any popular browser.
I would not be surprised in the least to see a browser/visitor report for slashdot and see the amazingly high count for lynx.
Are you guys really having such major problems using this simple technology? Do the rest of us a favor and stick to CoBol. Give me any language, flaws and all and I'll get the most out of it.
The hell you say. I consider any word with "bacca" in it to be offensive, hostile, and ugly. I also don't like the name "Sue". If I, or anyone like me, get to be a judge, you're toast.
If starting tomorrow, every ad I ever saw was actually something I might be interested in, rather than all the b.s. I usually see, I think would be a great thing. They can mine my data all they want, then they will know they can count on solicited donations for the topless, video game playing beer waitress linux user group every time.
When the day comes that this information is misused, like arresting me because I once instant messaged a terrorist and had done a search for the anarchists cookbook on the internet, then that is the time to start working to put policy in place as to how this information get's used.
If there have been a string of murders in my community, and they are all young, red heads. And by looking at my records, you can see that the only porn I look at online is pictures of young, red heads. Should they bring me in for questioning? No. Should the next web ad I hit be for a young, red head calendar? Yes.

I am almost certain to find one of these in 95% of convienient store stops. But if I go to a friends house, and they whip out some Pabst Blue Ribbon, I gets... opps... I mean it gets drunk just as fast.
Every so often an issue such as this comes up. Data mining versus privacy. The ridiculous thing is, I know what data mining is, but what is this thing called privacy?
Personally, I'm all for organ sales. I think it would balance out like this. The ones most tempted to enter into an organ transaction would be people needing money. Then the rich snob says, "Surely you aren't going to purchase that plebeian's kidney. You just don't know where it's been."
Now, to invent a recipe that calls for bloated, infected appendix. mmmmmmmmmmmm
1) Go to the Brazilian rain forest and locate a native tribe 2) Teach them java but keep them living in huts 3) Pay them in roots and berries 4) Let the contracts roll!!
Consciousness, is about awareness of the environment. If any kind of an intelligent being can perceive the various forms of matter in the universe, then one would expect that a system for relating to another being that you had two atoms in your pockets, as opposed to one, would be fabricated. Math is a system for dealing with quantites. Unless you stumble upon a doped up alien race than cannot perceive that the universe is made up of separate entities (i.e. I am the universe, the rock is me), then there will be a math equivilent.
Yes, we should outlaw computer programs in general too, cause everyone knows that it's computer software that is doing the actual data copying. I shudder to think of a world where people can make copies of data.
It seems to me that more and more people try to appear intelligent by insulting the works of Lucas. Even though popularity does not guarantee quality, it's tough to imagine this movie continuing to draw crowds if it were as big of a P.O.S. as people try to insinuate. I enjoyed AOTC very much. There were some special effects moments that were not that special. And one scene that was down right poorly mapped. And everyone loves to throw out CGI complaints like they know what they are talking about. And please, someone tell me what dialog they had a problem with. Give some examples. I'm just curious. I seem to see the same negative remarks repeated over and over like....like a bunch of clones. ARRRGGGG!!! I hold my head high when I say that I like AOTC and recomend it to others. I also enjoyed Spiderman, but not nearly as much. And I say this currently owning at least 50 Spiderman comics in little baggies in my closet. Along with having played the Spiderman character almost exclusively in the Marvel Universe RPG for years. I like the Spiderman character very much. I enjoyed several things about the movie, and will probably purchase it on DVD. Because they have come out in the same year and near the same time would I even think about comparing the two. And I liked AOTC the best. Ticket sales mean squat to me. If these movies had come out a year apart or 10 years apart, I still would have the same opinion. Minus the timeline of technology of course. But as it was, two really great movies were available to me within less than a month of each other. And that's great. To try and attack one in the hopes of making your favorite somehow seem better is useless and childish. I grew up with both SW and Spidey. I didn't even mind that Spiderman was shooting webbing out of his wrists. If they had wanted to go with a more natural production of the webbing it should have come out of his arse! Now that might have made it better than AOTC for me. And it was somehow vindication for me to see the role that Jar-Jar had in helping to get the Emperior to his final status. Somehow fitting that Jar-Jar helped to f'up the universe so much.
I prefer living in a Republic (USA).
I guess some people don't have to worry about making a living?

Doesn't that just make it 'ware'?

When corporations run the internet totalitarily(huh?) then there will be banner ads on every single page

So we have nothing to fear then.
Patent humor. I get it.
But when does it become self aware?
War is Hell. And it would be an easy level to beat but there are always demons.
It's very easy to get arrested. Some people have it down to a science. It also means your story will get more coverage than without arrests.

Hell, I feel sorry for you if you cannot write programs without bugs. Hope you aren't a programmer for a living.
