Everyone and their mother knows this, and there're reasons why many of them don't want to use it. It's like "fixing" lack of IP's with NAT, closing a security hole by disabling a feature, running your web server in port 8080 because 80 is blocked, or any of the hundreds of other of little hacks you are forced to do because of stupidity. Some of us just want a REAL domain. Some of us want our IP to resolv into that name as well. If that is vain then so be it. I'm sick of my domain names ending up being 15xf.7uh65.4fh.block21.net45.7892.someretardedisp. com.

I admire your confidence in the public, but I do not share it. I, for example, know of at least 10 people who have read The Elegant Universe, and I know 1 that understood it. I know 9 people who now think they know everything and did not understand a word of it. Perhaps in the measure of potential the public is not as stupid as some would think, but I believe our culture is poisoning that potential. The concept of becoming an expert on any subject after reading 1 book for a couple of weeks is becoming very pervasive. The worse part is that people really believe it and have a genuine feeling of convidence that they can make decisions based on their "expert" knowledge. Just look around you. How often is it that you see people trying to win an argument or convince you to see things their way using a very incorrect or illogical assumption based on a very, very novice understanding (or lack thereof) of a complicated subject? Combine this with most peoples inability to question the words of any high profile figure or anybody who can make themselves at least sound like they know what they are talking about (you see this with rediculous moderation on slashdot daily), and you have an extremely dangerous situation involving a general public practically begging to be manipulated.

Anyways, I'm about to go off on a tangent. Maybe, like I mentioned, there is a small nugget of truth to what you say, but until a few fundamental problems are fixed the public will happily prevent themselves from becoming educated.

For many, many people the point isn't to create an emergency planet to escape to if/when we screw this one up. It is simply the spirit of explanation. There is something about the idea of standing on a planet that no human has ever stood on before that is nothing but a red speck of light on the earths sky. If this is not good enough for you I pity you for that, but there are other rational reasons besides our potentially solveable self destructive ways. No matter how much we cut down on usage of natural resouces here everything is finite and will be depleted period. There is also our population which is rising by leaps and bounds. It would be nice to lower the burdens by having a colony or two on other worlds. Maybe, one day, the human race will fill the galaxy, and if this dreamer may dare say, our race won't be so naive and destructive as it is today.

Any other planet with life on it out there would undoubtedly regard us as the trailer-trash that devalues the neighborhood. "Welcome!" signs are not in our future...

Who's to say any other intelligent race would be any better than us? I'll give you a hint. Not you! It's just as possible they'll be worse!

  9. Re:iRiver, anyone? on Rio Karma User Review · · Score: 1

That includes non-music files, too, unlike the Karma.

It should be noted that the karma can store non music files. You just have to use the java software to upload them. Rio has hinted that it might release mass storage firmware for the karma, but I wouldn't expect it. However all of Rio's new players do use that, and it is rumoed that Rio will be releasing a new 40GB hard drive based player before Christmas.

The things that makes me want a Rio are the ethernet, base station, and FLAC support. I hope if the 40GB truely uses mass storage it will support some sort of network based FS if it has an ethernet port such as CIFS or NFS.

Also, the problem of the hard lock where he had to smack the player rather hard is unfortunately extremely common, and doesn't seem to be a head crash. I'm not entirely sure what the cause is, but many people who are forced to do it don't have issues after that. Maybe it is, but not even IBM has made drives that crash THAT frequently. In the end, as it is with all hardware it seems, nobody will ever make anything with all the features I want. *sigh*

The 2000 election was not a screwup, it was a coin toss.

The day we start deciding presidents based on chance is a sad day indeed.

Neither candidate won a majority of the popular vote in either the nation or in Florida. In fact, in both the differences were statistically insignificant.

This is a load of bull. Gore DID win the majority vote. Bush DID win the majority of electoral college points. Bush ARGUABLY won the majority vote in Florida. "Statistically insignificant" is not applicable. This is an election, and in such a thing if it comes to it one single vote in millions WILL mean the difference between winning and losing. If it's 20 million to 20 million one then the 20 million one wins.

There was no way to resolve the issue without one side feeling cheated.

There would have been no reason to feel cheated had there been no controversy in Florida. If there wasn't then all the rules would have been followed and the winner would have won fair and square. This, however, was not the case. I won't go into details of the issues in Florida here as they aren't really relevant other than to say there was very good reason for both sides to raise hell.

Either way, in the event of a true tie there are proper ways to handle the tie breaker, and the supreme court is not it.

I believe you are also missing the point of this organization monitoring the presedential election.

Please explain to me where the problem is? Should we all still be using 640K of RAM because that is clearly more than anyone will need? As the capabilities of hardware increases so will the software that uses it. Right now quake3 is an old and dated game, and I'm willing to bet your little diamond card would have troubles with it. The advances in quality of graphics do not come for free. Eventually the low end will be 512MB cards, and there will be old games that can run on such a pos card. You still only need a 486 w/ 8 megs of RAM to play DOOM, and I'm pretty sure that is more advanced than tetris. Perhaps you should adjust your expectations of what is truly required to run a "real game" by todays standards graphicswise.
