This is precisely why I watch TV. It's fake (aka not real;). BTW I loved Charlie's Angels for the very reason that it was obviously meant to be a show where I got to watch 3 hot women be... well hot. Sometimes mindless shows about beautiful women, endless gunfights, or whatever else are what my tired brain calls for. Sometimes I like to think.. depends on the occasion.
As for buffy I'll make one last attempt here 'cause of the many ppl I've met who don't understand the show or claim to not like it I eventually convert... and they support it now as rabidly as they once slammed it... so here goes. I'm 20 years old myself btw. My mom who got me into the show is 40. Her best friend who loves it too is 30. My Grandma thinks it's the greatest thing ever, but she won't tell me her age. My 16 year old sister also loves it. It's a teeny bopper show that not only makes fun of stereotypes and tenny bopper shows, it makes fun of itself pretty regularly. However there is more two it than that. Below the surface of the show is some incredible writing and an epic story that you really have to be a) smart enough or b) looking hard enough to notice. Unfortunately it IS a soap which means start at episode 1 and work your way up or you're lost and probably won't like it. I've seen forums on Buffy in the internet where a group of people all discussing a single episode might sound as if there were 3 or 4 groups of ppl who all saw a different show. That kind of demonstrates what I mean.
Anyways wether you like the show or not this has been a fun discussion.... could you tell me how to add a friend or attempt to become a friend of someone else using slashdots interface? =P
Has anyone heard a DVD-Audio disc? Is the sound really that much better?
Ever heard of movies on DVD? They are of the same quality last I checked sound-wise. 24bit 96kHz 5.1 sound is obviously better than 16bit 44kHz. The problem with judging this thought is many many many reciever decks out there do not have true 24bit or 96kHz DAC's. If your reciever has a DAC worth a damn and you spent more than $100 on your speakers (per speaker) then hell ya it sounds better.... a LOT better. The one thing I've noticed with 5.1 audio is the range of volume possible. From one speaker playing a tiny tiny sound to all 5 speakers playing the same sound at full volume. Unfortunately music these days does not seem to contain much.. crap can't think of the proper phrase... but don't seem to contain much difference in volume which can be a very powerful technique in music. I look foreward to what real musicians are capable of doing with the abilities of dvd-audio.
Physical materials isn't all they are counting. A leaked copy of a movie will more than likely effect ticket sales. Especially if ppl see that said movie is bad then decide not to go opening night. It's even worse when it's not the final edit and it still has rough edges. If people do not realize this it makes the movie look that much worse. Then there's losses from people who see it in the theater one time just for the sake of the big screen but then never go back 'cause they got their svcd copy. They lost a lot more than $5 because of this guy.
As far as tax dollars are concerned... I don't mind them being used to keep this thief behind bars anymore than I mind them keeping any thief behind bars. Besides tax dollars are going to keeping everyone caught with a half ounce of weed behind bars. They let the rapists and muggers go to make room for them. Hail to the drug war.

you would be the type who should be really interested in ReiserFS's future development. The creator of reiserfs shares many of your viewpoints. The release of Reiser4 scheduled for the end of this year will be a big step in that direction.

As far as your list of "old themes" or genres go... it is just a genre. While I admit I've never seen a hospital show I liked, most genres have a slew of crappy shows and 1 maybe 2 gems. IMHO it's worth wading through the crap to find the gem. I've watched a LOT of BAD TV in my time finding those shows which I like.
For me it's about control. It's the same reason I prefer to drive a stick instead of an automatic. The same reason I prefer to run linux over windows. The more control I have the more comfortable I feel. A manual transmission may be unnecessary and be a danger for stalls in the middle of intersections. That doesn't prevent me from using it.
I agree pointers seem to be the hardest thing for a lot of people to fully understand in programming. I've seem some crazy things done to pointers simply because people don't seem to understand them... to me they make perfect sense. I use to program primarily in assembly and in that EVERYTHING was a pointer.
Don't get me wrong I don't go and define every variable I use as a pointer. I've just never made a program with a limitation based on a desire to nto use pointers. The one example that comes to mind is DOOM's limit for segments and other map objects. I never would have thought of creating anything BUT a linked list for something like that. An array of structs just seems anti-intuitive.

I failt to see how this is a "huge" assumption. AFAIK there are more stars out "there" than grains of sand down "here." Seems to me the odds of another earthlike planet existing are pretty damned good. Think about it for a minute... the universe is pretty frickin' huge. A planet with tempuratures in an earthlike range, large amounts of water, oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere, etc. probably does exist. I and anyone with good sense would be willing to put money on it.
Now as far as intelligent life is concerned the odds are a lot worse but as this planet has demonstrated it is possible. Perhaps humanity will destroy itself long before we'll ever know for sure. However I'd be hard pressed to believe intelligent life forming was a one time fluke of the universe.

I do it for fun, and the hardware uses pointers exclusively. It always has. In order to locate a portion of memory you have to have information stored somewhere that gives the location of that memory.. aka a pointer. Oh and.. please let me know what languages these are that are removing pointers so that I may refrain from using such a limiting language.

Work with the "general public" for a long enough time and you tend to get a very depressing outlook in the world, and with good reason. Let's face it, VCR's are dirt cheap nowdays, and the tapes have the advantage of being removeable and easy to trade with others.
The also have the advantage of degrading quickly over time and with multiple re-recordings, general low quality even on slow speed, and often contain a lot of noise. Give me digital high quality recordings anyday.
If you're only goal is to watch a box with moving pictures and hopefully hear a good story I suppose a VCR is all you need. I prefer to try to project myself into a show. This allows me "suspend disbelief" easier and get more involved with the story. The bigger the screen and higher the quality of both audio and video the easier that is for me to do as the fictional world becomes more convincing to my senses.
Most of us only have one or two TV programs we care enough about to bother recording them, if that. For a task that small, a regular old VCR does the trick.
Speak for yourself. Over the course of a week I have a minimum of 6 shows I want to watch, all of which are only played once a week and are usually brand spankin' new episodes. And that is only if I'm strained on time.. there are some others that I like to watch but I wouldn't bother planning around it if I had other things to do... which leads to the following question...
Personally, I make a conscious effort to limit my TV watching time. It's all too easy to sit back and get passively entertained by television nonsense, and suddenly realize you've wasted hour after hour, accomplishing nothing.
In an attempt not to sound rude as I'm genuinely curious, what is it about passive entertainment that is such a bad thing in your mind? Why is it that you and many many others hear feel a need to be accomplishing something every waking minute? Is it some form of obsessive compulsiveness? Have you even thought that have that checked out? Is it a symptom of what is commonly referred to as being a workaholic? I mean... I get plenty of stuff done a day. I attend multiple classes. I have a rather time consuming job. I study and do homework. Heck I even find time to fit some personal projects in there. Even on top of that I still make sure I got enough time to catch a few hours of TV every couple of days. Why should I have to work for my well (imho) deserved entertainment and relaxation time?
As far as I know my brain hasn't drizzled out of my ears, and I seem to be getting smarter as I haul my ass through school. TV hasn't made me want to kill anyone (yet). I haven't developed any social disorders because of excessive TV watching. About the only thing that has happened is I've thoroughly enjoyed some very well told stories over the years and look foreward to enjoying more. TV is no different to me than a bunch of friends sitting around swapping stories. In fact I don't enjoy watching TV near as much by myself as I do watching in the company of others.
So seriously... what's the big deal?
Now as far as TiVo goes.. I know exactly why I do not own one. First off I'm technically adept enough to record and manage my collection from my computer with high quality captures. With a TiVo the inability to transfer files from it to other systems without messing with the box is extremely disappointing. The lack of space without a hack and only having mpeg2 capability is also highly disappointing (An Xcard with component out playing Divx's looks REALLY good). For shows I do not have to archive I have a WinTV-PVR by hauppauge which does a fine job for record now, watch later, and delete type TV. A TiVo would do nothing but limit my options. And seeing as I am not the casual user and TV watched that most effects sales of TiVo units I dare not speak for that segment of the population.
Or you could make it really simple and realize 15,000 is 150% more than 10,000. Therefore 300 is 150% more than 200.

This guy was simply bringing up a suggestion for a nice distro closely related to LFS yet easier to use in certain ways. He wasn't putting down other distros. He wasn't demanding you use gentoo. He didn't "storm out and preach." I don't see how it was misguided considering the close relation between gentoo and LFS.
It appears to me that gentoo in general hits a nerve with you. If someone came out and posted "GENTOO RULeS EVERYTHING ELSE SUCKS@!##@!#" then I'd be right there with you. However you're not. Lighten up. Believe or not, not everyone has heard of gentoo yet.
I'm looking forward to the day I can plug my USB MP3 player [frontierlabs.com] in and the OS automatically detects it, mounts it and allows me to use it... without having to hit the command line.
I've been able to do this for quite a while.. altho my distro is custom built it was quite easy to do.. so I would hop eit'd be in the more popular mainstream distros.

A correct multithreaded program is HARD!!!!! Anybody who thinks otherwise is an idiot.
