Liunux may have it's complexities, but that is part of what makes it great. My only problem is when people turn these complexities into some sort of failing and/or overstate them (Copying a CD in Linux is not one of those complex things). I use Linux because of its complexity... if you want simple click 'n go use Windows.

I never understood part of the "communities" goal to "spread the linux gospel" to the windows based "heathens." I find Jehovas Witnesses annoying enough as it is... Linux is what it is, don't give any heed to those who think it's the second coming. It's not for everyone, and never will be.

Please bear with me as I'll admit up front I haven't RTFA. However I'm only responding to your specific remarks. First you mentioned that this Klawans guy created digital backups of these records. You then go on to say he's also sharing them on p2p networks. Now according to the summary of the article this is about defeating anti-piracy technologies (i.e. CSS) and not the actual act of copyright infringement (i.e. p2p).

Preserving the method of playing the original media, while important, would do very little good in preserving the media itself. I'm not sure how familiar with records you are, but they are not a very reliable archival medium. The very act of playing them wears them out a considerable amount. What good is archiving an album if you cannot play it back? Making a digital backup of such a medium only makes sense for long time archival and enjoyment of the content.

Now I'm confused as to what making a digital backup of a record has to do with circumvention of anti-piracy devices.. as as far as I can remember records don't have anything like that built into them. With that and the mention of p2p I'd dare say things got a little off topic... my main point was just the fact that records wear out quickly with repeated use...

The idea of the integer decoder being of less quality runs along the same lines as the difference between a radeon 9700's fpu pipeline or its predecessors integer core. There's problems with precision when using fixed point numbers. I'm not even sure the integer decoder WOULD use fixed point numbers, but it makes sense. I'm also too ignorant about either codec to know wether or not fixed point precision is enough for either... this is the question that I believe the original poster and I would like answered.

Sometimes right clicking cuts-and-pastes; othertimes it doesn't.

Hmm ya.. right clicking has never cut os pasted anything for me before... perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the middle mouse button pastes, and the simple act of highlighting copies. This works everywhere too... uncanny how it works eh? If you are speaking of the inconsitancies say between desktop environments such as gnome and kde well... they extend the basic X clipboard in different ways. Gnome and KDE are two different systems, and if you mix them you'll get inconsistant behavior... it's the way these things work. You want consistancy... choose one and stick to it. Besides KDE and Gnome copy and paste are starting to work together lately.

Hopefully the main development team will work on getting a solid API in place..

Who? You mean the kernel developers? The XFree86 developers perhaps? Perhaps GNU (they do make glibc and gcc)? Maybe the KDE/Gnome teams... You're post is kind of awkward... I'm having a hard time telling if you are intentionally trying to be funny or really don't have a clue.

Not even your reveered windows has an all inclusive API. They have GDI, DirectX, etc. etc. Different API's for each job and they usually don't communicate much with eachother either. So I must ask...

Now don't get me wrong I understand as well as anyone divx, like mp3, is primarily used for piracy on the web. Now of course a statement like that usually gets a ton of flames in reply as ppl scream and shout "where's your proof?!" People seem to get very defensive when you point out the reality of situations. However just load up pretty much any public p2p network (i.e. kazaa) and look around for 10 seconds, and you get the idea ;).

However, I rip my own CD's to mp3 (god what I'd give for portable ogg players and for my Audiotron to support ogg). I record my own tv shows (i.e. I don't even download those... 'cept for buffy svcd's from usenet.. and even then I only get the ones that haven't been released on DVD, and purchase the boxed sets as they do). I don't rip DVD's as that kills quality... I just copy the DVD's and decrypt them for backup purposes, and to be able to play the dvd's straight to the hard disk. However it can be pretty expensive getting enough space to copy season boxed set of X show after another :). I've never used CloneCD or no-CD/fix SafeDisc hacks as I know how to take care of a CD and own my games.

Bah.. I should really just stop talking now. I just wanted to point out people like me do exist, and this set top divx4 player is just what I've been asking for. Now all I ask for is ogg vorbis playback support and a tv tuner card with hardware divx4 encoding.

P.S. I also use divx for home recordings.

Unfortunately I don't have the time nor inclination to write a book explaning my viewpoint on this wonderful new age to you, however you do have a valid concern with security. Science and technology is becoming more and more complicated the more we discover and learn. It cannot be avoided and should not. People will just have to become better prepared to handle it. Security may be harder and more complex in such a setup, but that does not mean it is impossible. If you ask me not trying to take advantage of new ideas and technologies on the basis of it becoming harder or more complex is just wrong. ... and stop from integrating applications deep down into the core.

The integration you speak of in KDE is a side effect of a bigger issue. KDE is very intelligently designed in that it does something very well most projects either don't do at all or make a half assed try it. It is modularized. It's like a big set of legos that you can put together in a variety of ways to make something cool. It also allows one to very easily "integrate" as you put it. I.E. this "kroupware" (god I hope they change that name) project is basically taking the components of the several PIM applications and putting them together in a different way. Which is pretty easily thanks to KDE's incredibly modular nature.
