Even though your AC, I'll still respond because these are valid points for anyone considering Linux.

Games, I can not dispute that. My kids love the Sim type games and various others. I have 2 other computers in the house that can run W2K for games, and they have a PS1, PS2 and a Dreamcast that they use for games. The Linux desktops are in thier rooms and heavily used, they play games elsewhere.

No usable software - I'll take that as a troll comment. Other then the lack of games, they have everything they need. Browsing the web, listening to mp3's or watching divx movies from my Samba server, an office package, GAIM and even plugging in their MP3 players and memory cards from the digital camera. It works and it works fine for this. I get the added benefit of not having to constantly remove spyware and adding software, updates and changing configurations from a remote SSH connection.

Unfamiliar interface - Compared to what? The change from 98 or W2K --> XP is not much different then moving over to a Linux desktop. I truely believe this is the biggest non issue when switching to something other then MS. They've used Knoppix, Fedora, Lindows, Lycoris, Mandrake, Win98, W2K and XP and have never had a problem finding out how any of them worked. I believe that whole "unfamiliar" concept is blown way out of proportion.

A Linux desktop is not Windows. I am not MS free and I don't plan to be, I use them both. I am not going to use or pay for MS on every machine when I do not need it on every machine.

I'm all for choice but I was not at all impressed with Lindows compared to other desktop based Linux distibutions. I bought $199 Walmart PC's for my kids this christmas. One with Lindows and one with Lycoris. Lindows was usable and it worked without problems but the click-n-run selection was too limited. I tried several non Lindows repositories and regular old packages but eventually I got frustrated and started over with Mandrake. Although not required, I feel the money I could have spent on a Lindows subscription was much better spent on a Mandrake membership.

Off topic but when I went there, I paid by a Visa check card. Over a period of two months, I had two more charges for various amounts from the same place. According to the Visa fraud department, they determined the number was entered manually and not by swiping the card (no shit, I still have the card in my wallet). Micron bought out Dominion Semiconductor, a joint Toshiba-IBM memory fab plant in Manassas, VA in early 2002. As time went on, production went down, work on a second process lab was all but halted and the plant effectively stopped production early in 2003 (I had a family member that worked there). In the same time frame, they also cut production in their main plant in Idaho. The goal at was to also buy or merge with cash strapped Hynix in Korea but that was shot down by the Korean government. I believe their goal was either to move production out of the US or to buy who they could and join forces with those they could not. In that time frame, memory prices were extremely low, companies were failing and Micron saw a chance to gobble up the competition. The gamble failed when the Hynix buy fell through. Interestingly enough, they applied for and have recieved government funds related to memory dumping.
They had a goal of getting memory prices to a certain level and could not do it with competitors.

No. MP3 encoders have to decide what to get rid of and what to keep based on your desired bitrate and settings. They use a psycho acoustic, frequency cutoff, and can join channels based on frequency range[1]. Each mp3 compressor has a different model it follows to achive the smaller file, some are percieved better then others.

    [1]
Lower frequencies are harder for a person to determine the location of the source. This is the basis for home theaters with one subwoofer running in mono placed anywhere nearby. You do not really need a left and right subwoofer and placement is not as important from an imaging perspective (although placement can efffect the speakers frequency response). You can save space in compression of lower frequencies by combining certain lower frequencies from both channels into one center channel. The low frequency analysis is just a small portion of of the audio spectrum and for good compression, the ranges are treated differently for different reasons.

I have no opinion on using weight as the reference. My point was using gas consumption seems to makes more sense then mileage driven. The bottom line is the tax money collected is spent one way or another. If you think getting rid of a gasoline tax is going to put more money in your pocket, you are crazy. The tax on something else will go up to make up the difference. Money spent by a government has to equal money collected by the people no matter how you look at it. The only way you will ever pocket anything is if money spent goes down. Getting rid of a gas tax is not going to do that. That is why some states have a high income tax rate but a low sales tax but others have no sales tax, others have property tax on vehicles but a low property tax on your real property, some pay high registration fees but lower gas taxes, some pay a school tax and others pay a wage tax but some do not pay those or pay low property tax. You get my point? It all evens out in the end regardless of what you call the tax it.

    Back to the gas tax..
You can in theory, get gas for non automotive use and not pay the tax in some areas. The problem is the price would not end up being much lower because regular gas stations make money in volume as they sell thousands of gallons, are streamlined for filling cars and have a lot of competetion. Opening up a corner store for filing lawn mowers would not be cost effective. I worked at a major hub airport on the east coast. We had a filing station on the airport for the airline support vehicles. The regular unleaded and diesel fuel was bought by the airline without the motor vehicle tax attached.

I know nothing about the history behind that effort but isn't that the purpose of a gasoline tax? The more you travel, the more gas you buy and therefore pay more taxes? That system leans harder on those that get less MPG but I also read a study referenced on /. many moons ago that showed as weight per axle of a vehicle increased, the damage it does to the asphalt goes up by a much larger factor. In fact, you could infer that same thing based an Oregon state study (Google cache)

With that in mind, a gas tax would seems like the best choice.
