Which merely proves you didn't didn't read my post:
these things are to a point where the $70 card is good enough for average gaming needs.
The MXs may be alot slower at the benchmarks, but so what? For the average gamer they'll still be plenty fast. That's like saying "Look at the numbers, you'd be stupid to get a Corvette, the Porsche 911 is way faster", when all I need to do is get to work in the morning.
People can keep shelling out $300 for the latest Geforce, good for them, but that's 6 PS2 games for me.:)
Methinks that it wouldn't be trivial to continue to pipe the results in a terse format as well.
For L-K and releases a terse format is appropriate, but I think that keeping the longer ones around somewhere can help some of us newbies understand what the heck is going on in there.
As an example, look at the recent dust-up with favicons. They were put in, caused regressions in the code that weren't fixed for weeks, and never really worked very well. Now, they are mostly turned off by default, but in the process wasted at least some effort that would have been placed elsewhere. All this for a feature, that as far as I can tell is mostly eye-candy with very little, if any useability benefits to the user.
I think the favicon in the url is aesthetically pleasing only, but the favicons in tabs becomes really usefull when you have lots of the open. Almost to the point where I can't live without them.
And with favicons in the personal toolbar, you can rename your bookmarks to nothing, and you can cram about 30 or so of your favorite sites on one toolbar, each with their own icon. It makes my browsing easier, and it looks damn cool.
I'll probably get flamed for this - but I installed 2.4.17 from Red Hat's Rawhide distro (find it on rmpfind.net) and it worked like a champ.
rpm -Uvh kernel-2.4.17-athlon.rpm or whatever it was and rebooted. I'm sure everyone will chime in on how 'evil' it is to install a kernel by rpm, but for my typical desktop box, it's no big deal.
I think you'd need to get the new modutils package, but i don't recall.
I guess the higher-ups at HP have been listening to Perens and Co. Good for them.
I hope that HP truly supports Mandrakesoft for a push on the desktop. It's one thing to sayt this at Linuxworld with all the Linux geeks in attendance, let's hope they follow through.
They can start by funding some open source fonts for X. Then they can take all those tons of highly experienced and smart HP-UX and Tru64 guys and dedicate them to kernel development and testing. Throwing a few people at Mozilla wouldn't hurt either. While they're at it, they can help fund KDE/GNOME and hire some people out of the community.
I think that's the parent poster's point. If people would slow down and think about how difficult it is to manage and maintain a project of this size, they would realize that a little patience with Linus' development process is the best solution.
Before everyone flames Linus for his dislike of CVS and other management tools....
From Kernel Trap:
His general point is summarized with this statement, "One 'patch penguin' scales no better than I do. In fact, I will claim that most of them scale a whole lot worse". He goes on to explain this statement quite thoroughly, adding: " In short: don't try to come up with a 'patch penguin'. Instead try to help existing maintainers, or maybe help grow new ones. THAT is the way to scalability".
Say what you want about Linus' attitude - Having a kernel lieutenant probably wouldn't help either. Either way, there's only so much one person can do.
Agreed, IMO the RIM Blackberry has by far the most intuitive interface on any handheld out there. I know and use Graffiti, but that little keyboard is very nice.
I guess that's why I'm drooling waiting for the Handspring Treo with a similar keypad...
Agreed, this is a huge advantage that the linux desktop has that no one seems to mention. In Linux, apps don't generally take over my mime types, install spyware, or my personal favorite, insist on putting "neatpp" in C:\progra~1\company name\neatapp\neatapp.exe.
Sometimes I sit there and tell myself, "Good thing your company puts all its products in a folder named after your company, that way I can easily manage the multitude of apps that you guys provide." After a while, my Program files looks like a freaking billboard....
I HATE software that does this. Especially when 90% of windows applications believe that they deserve and absolutely must have an icon in the system tray. Even better is when they don't put the icon in the startup folder, so you have to go Registry hunting. Anything by Real does this. "By closing MemoryLeakLauncher Plus, you could lose some of the great features of the Real Player." Fuck off and die Real.
The Linux desktop may not have some of the "great applications" that you see in windows, but I have yet to see a linux app that maximizes its install, hiding my taskbar with that dumb blue screen, and insisting on stealing focus. This is the desktop that people think we should emulate? No thanks.
I own quite a few Loki titles myself. This sucks. At least the open source SDL will live on in someway, so all their effort will not be totally wasted.
At the same time, I wish they would have diversified some of the titles that they offered. One can only play so many Quake knockoffs....
methinks this will not be an instant success though, at least in the short term.
Let's say MS puts our UltimateTV for Xbox, or whatever it will be called. It will still require some sort of addon hardware to get PVR functionality out of the Xbox, unless they have thought about that already and the Xbox can be software upgraded to make it a PVR. (Anyone know for sure?) At the minimum, I would guess at least another/bigger hardrive.
Either way, hardware expansion for consoles have never proved succesful (that Nintendo Robot, SegaCD, Sega32X), so I would guess they are merging UTV and Xbox into one uber box instead of extending the Xbox. Either way, Joe Consumer needs to buy a new box.
Well, when I saw the Subaru MP3 or whatever they call their latest model with a factory mp3 player at the North American International Autoshow I wondered - MP3 has a mindshare that people equate to digital audio.
When I asked if there was going to be a Subaru OGG, the guy looked at me funny.
This is the kind of barrier that ogg needs to get around.
yes there is. If you browse a CD using audiodlave, you see both an mp3 and ogg folder. You set the settings in the K control panel (or whatever its called), and never have to mess with it again.
If you do both the ogg and mp3 directories, its a good way to compare both of the formats head to head.
Asking a girl to marry you on Slashdot, and having her reply on Slashdot.
:)
I don't know if this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen, or one of the most pathetic.
Good luck guys!

How are they stealing from the community? Granted, their drivers are closed-source, but they're not stealing anything.
That's why I like nvidia's MX line of Geforces. I mean, these things are to a point where the $70 card is good enough for average gaming needs.
...
Now that the Geforce4 is out, I guess I can start looking at the cheaper Geforce3's
Looks like I spoke to soon, looks like they will be maintained at http://linux.bkbits.net

You could say the same thing about Windows shareware software - 95% of it is crippleware, nagware, spyware, or just plain sucks too.
Neither operating system has a monopoly on crappy end-user software.
rather than actually copying your fingerprints (although that might be possible too!)
:)
Or, "they" can just do it this easy way, hunt you down and cut your finger off...

Some of us do understand. I've got apt-get update and upgrade in my crontab, which emails the results to me every night at 12:00am.
... but it is possible to do - maybe an install time option for this would work.
That means 'Aunt Tilly' never even has to even update her box, ever.
Granted the typical 'desktop user' wouldn't know how to do this

Mr. Gates sent a video with congratulations that teased, "I just want you to know that I can write slicker and tighter code than John."
This is the funniest thing Bill Gates has EVER said.

Am I asking for too much?

The best are the PHBs in that commercial, something like:
"If he's so good, how come he only plays for peanuts?"
"Because he loves the game."
Heh.
IIRC, Unisys also had a piece of software called the Master Control Program.

Anyone have more details on the specifics on the software? Sounds like a modified distro already set up to go with webmin to me.

What will we do? We've already talked about this rumour enough to fill a Karma Canyon, now what hell are we supposed to talk about?
....
Surely not discuss regular news, back to unfounded, ridiculous rumors we go
