In addition to this, you also must sign a contract with the console maker to abide by their rules of distribution.
You can't, or should I say it would be very hard to, develop a game for a console without purchasing the required documentation and testing hardware. And console manufacturers love to keep a tight lock on this stuff. Every once in a while a dev kit will show up on eBay and the manufacturers pretty much lose their minds.
They have pretty much rendered it almost impossible to program for their consoles as a hobbyist or small business.
It's about control. Control of what you can and cannot do online. First they may start filtering out movies and music, but when do they start filtering out thoughts and ideas or anything else that goes against the mainstream. Before we know it, we have another Great Firewall of China, except on a much wider scale.
Sure encryption helps, but they will simply throttle bandwidth for encrypted channels. Who's going to hold these carriers accountable. Oh your Tor isn't working? Must be a problem with the program, we aren't doing anything on our end. Riiiight.
If this all goes down I'm taking bet on when people will revert back to good old fashioned modems and bulletin board systems for sharing information. With the pervasiveness of cell networks, I'm surprised theres still not a thriving 'underground' aside from whats online.
MySpace does no sort of valid name, age, or date of birth verification. Hell you can go on there now with an existing profile and change your last name as many times as you wish. Mine is Weibowitz, at least as far as myspace is concerned. I just did that to keep annoying spam bots from bugging me.
Regardless, if a boogie man wants to sign up for myspace and go about doing some e-Stalking, this exercise in "security" theater won't stop them. I suspect myspace even probably knows this and is just going through the measures to shut the states AG's up.

you broke the first rule of computer warranties. if your stuff breaks, remove any 3rd party hardware that you possibly can out of it, lest the manufacturer tries to blame the 3rd party for the 'failure'

And the funny thing is, a lot of people wind up blaming Windows on problems that were really being caused by faulty hardware. In the early days of win 95, I noticed a lot of times that Windows was really unstable due to low end and sometimes bad hardware. Granted, windows is hyper sensitive to crap hardware and could of been made a little more fault tolerant, but a lot of times h/w failures gets blamed on the OS...
