    a good route for linux to go. With the massive amounts of data that a DVD can hold, you can present a typical desktop user with one single 'cd' they just pop in their drive, and give them a whole linux distro, a X desktop suite of your choice (gnome or whatever, not trying to start a religious war), and a full suite of applications (staroffice, mozilla, etc etc.).

    They can take it for a spin as long or as little as they like, and if they want to, install it on next boot. Keep their settings and everything in a UMSDOS (sp?) partition or something, or some sort of big fat file that sits on their windows drive....

    i really should keep these ideas to myself...

    I dont get these cable companies. They offer digital cable and cable modem in the condos directly across the street from me, but yet our condo, which is only a year older, doesnt have it offered.. Why do I think they have it and not us? The developers probably paid for it... It's all about who has the money these days, customer service doesnt exist...

    on cnn.com...cops confiscated something like 1500 fake 'protective sunglasses' for watching the exlipse made with, get this, tea bags. 'Street Kids' are credited with the crimes. I bet they chop your eyes balls out for something like that over there...who knows. anyways:

    The next version of IIS (which ships with Microsoft Corp.'s Whistler project) uses several ideas introduced by Tux, including the kernel-space design.

    So we'll bash OpenSource all to hell, but yet we'll steal the standards and ideas adopted by Open Source applications. Is this their idea of 'embrace and extend'... ? I may just be uptight, but this pisses me off....

    I f'ing hope not. Sorry to be so blunt, but they have totally put a bad taste in my mouth. We have gone through 2 agents to sell our still unsold house. One of them we literally didnt hear from for months, the other hardly does her job, and recently asked my sick with kidney stones gf to wait on the balcony in 90+ heat while she shows the house.....dolts

    this is why we have things like the JFCOM (joint forces command) and joint-this and joint-that. We identify the cell sites, call up our friends in the navy and lob a few cruise missles at them, then roll in the planes. When your launchin a strike on a target, you dont go 'lets send just our 117's'. its usually a large scale project that takes lots of planning... if there is a threat, its nuetralized first

    Fountain is probably right. I know from experience that the military, which requires mission critical applications, is still depending on Motif and even in some cases (yuck) OpenLook. There probably are some companies out there that are capable of looking ahead of the curve, but as far as being tried and true, Motif is the best route.

    of course, probably going to start a holy war with that statement

    How about some cold hard facts.
    The russians have developed the next generation to follow the su-27. It is capable of doing the equivalent of stopping in mid air, and turning around in little space. Ive seen it on video. Guess who has some of these babies on order, china
    The f-15 (our most superior fighter) will be obsolete in 5 years acording to the us air force. And guess what, our ex president turned down further funding for the Joint strike fighter...the next generation of aircraft.
    it takes 15 years on average to develop a new aircraft (from conceptualization to flight testing to production). Then tack on a couple more years for fufilling all the production orders. So do the math. in 5 years, we'll be obsolete. how bad is it going to get 10 years after that. dumbass

    ...as the policy a company i may or may not work for has on software. Freeware is not allowed to be installed on any company computers because it may violate certain COPYWRITES. Wtf!?!? Free software may violate a copywrite? Its free.... makes you wonder how disallusioned these corporate and government types are. Do they even know what they are talking about when they try to lay down policy?

    Lets go back a couple years. Suppose they voted at microsoft for the CEO....Instead of some genious named Bill they voted for Hank the mail guy cause he's more popular. Where would MS be today. What if oracle picked that cute secretary instead of larry ellison, would Oracle be the #1 dbase around or would we still be using Foxpro (shudder). its a simple matter of this....the strong survive...the weak wither and die. If we vote for somebody to lead a project, your takin a gamble and possibly shutting out a prospectively good person for the job..... Infighting != good. Having a true leader jump in, not being voted in, and leading a project is really what makes history....

    as a kid i was a huge space fan. Im always fascianted to look at pictures of stuff in space. I used to just flip endlessly through astronomy magazines and books just looking at the cool galaxies and stuff. what saddens me though, is how little interest society has on the space program these days. These people are literally risking life and limb in the name of bettering society. Many common day items are spun off from the space program. I feel like im the only one watching the lift offs of the space shuttle. I hope the populace regains its interest in the space program, it'ld seem like such a waste if they didnt

    great. Ive always wanted a book on svgalib, but that was like 4 years ago. Is anybody even supporting svgalib? I dont use it because only X supports my graphics card. If the guy wanted to make a decent effort to write a book, I think a GTK or QT manual would be much more timely.
    I can see where this would be useful though, maybe coding apps for older machines, and possibly make some cheap embedded stuff (kiosks, etc etc.). But does any applications still rely upon svgalib ?

    we have all this information piling up about carnivore, all these reports coming in from the media, all this awareness, but yet, who , besides the EFF and EPIC etc are doing anything to challenge it ?. I think we all need a wake up call. This is a major violation of our privacy, and if we let them get away with this, they wont stop after that.

    This seems to work for our national secrets, how about corporate ones : As far as networks are concerned, have a physically seperate network for sharing of sensitive data. Use strong encryption of all files and use removeable hard drives. Lock the drives and other documents in GSA approved safes. Laptops can be stored in the same way, in the safe. Use sign in sheets for asset tracking and for when the safe is opened. Install keypads on doors to secured rooms. You could even go so far as do background checks on your employees before you allow them access to sensitive material. the list really does go on and on.

    like flamebait but its not meant to be, but doesnt it seem like SUN is trying really really hard to get into the liking of the OSS community. If so, I ask you this.....Why bother? Sun is an icon already, much like 'IBM Compatible' pc. They dont have to do much more to impress us, what is compelling them to go out of their way to kiss up to the OSS community? (ie staroffice, solaris etc etc.) is it possible sun is in financial trouble?

    but as much as i dont like the guy, he needs to be given credit where its due. He has the balls to stand up to the MPAA and fight for the rights of all DeCSS users. Plus he's taken on the SS, the FBI, the court system, etc etc. Part of me thinks of him as a media whore, but yet he still has done alot to contribute to the electronic community and protect us from the bass-ackwards view that the media and society has on 'hackers'.

    its always been on military computers. As I look at my monitor right now, I see a big fat sticker that says 'consent to monitoring, use of this computer constitutes consent to monitoring at all times ' etc etc etc. I dont see what the big deal is. Its the same principal in the corporate world as in the military.... you have access to potentially damaging material (if it gets in the hands of the wrong person). If your doing anything to put your org at risk, well then you lose your rights to 'privacy'. also, its _their_ equipment. Thats why I never send personal email from my work box. as far as Web surfing, etc, dont go to any sites that may not shine in yoru favor. use common sense.... ...

    Excuse me? pass the blame game? No sir, I believe in giving credit where its due, but also pointing out the BS that 'the man', 'big biz', or whatever pulls. In fact, I dont think i yell loud enough. Sorry, but when it comes to the little guy vs the multi-billion dollar corporation, I take the side of the little guy. There is no such thing as corporate loyalty any more, there is no such thing as customer service any more, and we are all basically marked as mindless drones who'll buy or believe anything. I will not bite my tounge. brad nowell said it best "the day that i die is the day that i shut my mouth and put down my guitar".....
