But is his level of giving admirable and beyond the average. Absolutely.
Only in the pure $$$ sense. And I do think it is great that he does it. But there is a difference between that, and saying that it is a sacrifice for him to do so. THAT is the point I am arguing, and people always forget that.
It is VERY counterproductive for people like you to piss on the philanthropists work. Imagine if Bill Gates sees that sort of sentiment in the world and says: "If people are going to criticize me no matter what I do, fuck em, I'll keep the money."
Hmm. Then that wouldn't make it genuine philanthropy now, would it?
It was not the amount that mattered, but the attitude and the self-sacrafice. And from this distance who can judge those factors about Bill Gates or Steve Jobs?
It isn't about judging, there are certain facts here. I'll use Gates as an example. He has made no financial sacrifices. WHAT?! But he has given millions upon millions to charity - maybe billions!
About 5 years ago, I did a rough calculation on his net worth. If he gave $1 million away, it was the equivalent of someone worth $100,000 giving away $5. And this didn't account for the fact that both live in the same world, where things cost the same... e.g. if Gates gave away 3/4 of everything he owned, he could still live incredibly comfortably. Someone who makes $50k/year cannot.
And let's remember, Bill Gates named his foundation after himself and his wife. Yes, it is his and he founded it, but it speaks to the level of his altruism (or lack therof). Bill Gates doesn't have to give any of his money away IMO. But when someone goes on and on about how great he is because of his charity, I tell them they are full of shit. He has made no sacrifice to do so.
And he is but one example, there are many others. Why is this even a news story? There are probably people much more deserving of your awe and respect right in your own community.
I am not convinced that global warming exists. I mean, by our recorded temperatures, the earth's temperature has risen 3 degrees in the last couple of hundred years. So what? I mean, how accurate could they have been in their ability to measure temperature back then, they were still shitting in the woods.
It's like all things linux. It works, but it takes time and energy to get it to that stage. He really should have researched before buying.
Which doesn't always work. I bought a card that was supposed to be supported. I struggled with it for a couple of weeks. I *finally* found out that I had a new version of the same model card, and it wasn't supported. Since I bought it as a bundle deal with the router, I just said "f it" and reinstalled Win2k on the laptop.
Oh right, I forgot, you people in the USA are the only ones who work for a living. All of us here in Europe...
get to take 3 months off for holiday.:)
OK, maybe not all of you. But you seem to have a better grasp on that than we do here in the states. I, on the other hand, had my boss tell me to take off the time I needed when my daughter was born. Two days after she was born, he was telling me I needed to get back into the office.
I think it is funny when people here make fun of the French for not working a lot, taking long vacations, etc. Sounds to me like they have it all figured out.
I work in sales. The more that I can understand our products, the better of a salesman I can be.
Not to mention all the meals, drinks, swag, gifts, bribes, etc that you probably get. Oh, and the commission, for selling things that don't exist. Oh, and for promising ridiculous things to the clients that cause many people to work extra hours to deliver it.
I support any decision that will put the final nail in the coffin of baseball.
Way to go, MLB. Kill off your last remaining set of fans. You officially lost me in the 1994 strike, but my interest was on the decline anyway at that point.
Seriously, I think that fantasy leagues are the only thing keeping baseball alive now. I have no clue why they are so popular, and I personally just don't get the whole fantasy league thing. But how can MLB NOT get it?
You mean like how Windows XP before and after Service Pack 2 are lumped together (firewall, security, etc)? Or how Windows 95, 98, and XP are lumped together (system stability, BSOD)?
All are products of one company. The others are not. Period.
I'm no Microsoft apologist, but it takes a certain combination of arrogance and ignorance to assume that your side is absolutely right, and the other side is absolutely wrong (both in terms of opinions, and how the opinions are presented). Everyone has a valid point to make. All that matters is how the points are interpreted.
And you are a shining example of that combination. I took no sides, merely pointed out that it was unfair to lump together products from different companies.
Unless you can honestly claim to give a larger percentage of your salary to charity than bill gates has, then I encourage you to please enjoy a hearty slice of shut the hell up.
I *can* claim that. You probably can too. I ran the numbers a couple of years ago, and here is what I came up with. If you have a net worth of $100,000 then 4 of your dollars is equivalent percentage wise with $1 million of Bill Gates' dollars.
So he donates $20 million a year? If you donate $80, you are on par percentage wise. But here is the kicker - Bill and I live in the same world. He could give away HALF of everything he owns, and still live extremely comfortably. I could not. So even if you look at percentages, it isn't quite the same.
Should he be commended for donating that much money? Sure, that money will go to good causes. (But let's remember, he did name his foundation after him and his wife. So his intentions weren't necessarily "pure".)
Bill Gates has donated more money than I will ever see in my lifetime. But make no mistake about it, he has made no sacrifices to do so, and he is by no means generous.
Exactly. Accusations. He doesn't really know what he's talking about...and his article speaks for itself in that context. He really comes off like a fanatic, but I would say: you have an "open source PC." I do too. Mine works. Lots of peoples' do.
Actually, I have had many of the same feelings, and I have been using Linux since Redhat 5.1. I use it at work, and at home, and it still frustrates me to this very day. But I love it, and will continue to use it. I guess I can't really explain why. To be fair - Windows and every Mac ever produced is frustrating as well, just in different ways.
Well, it's not necessarily a good idea, for two reasons.
a) It will mean higher prices.
b) It will mean fewer choices.
You forgot one..
c) It will suck
Think of this: there are channels out there that built their viewer-base through popularity. (FoodTV, Discovery) How did they get popular? People could tune in and check it out because they already had the channel. How will that work if people only get certain channels? Will there be a preview option? How do you know if any of the other channels are interesting? What if a channel kind of gets out of "focus" for you? I thought I would love having the Speed channel, but it is mostly crap now - NASCAR, American Chopper knockoffs, NASCAR. blech. I am glad I have it because I can catch something interesting every once in a while, but if I had to choose whether or not to pay for it, I probably wouldn't.
I have been channel-surfing or have seen something in the guide that made me stop and watch it, sometimes on a channel I would never watch. Sometimes I am in the mood to watch a dog show! But I don't think I'd pay for Animal Planet. But I guess I am not "normal". I don't have 30 different shows that I follow religiously. If I miss a show that I do like - oh well. One thing I wish they would do is if you buy a channel, they give you a free re-run channel so you can catch things you miss.
But the big point that some people are missing is that you probably will still be able to buy your tier channel packages, they will most likely just add on the ala carte channels as an option. And probably a relatively expensive one too. If the cable companies don't want you to use this option, they will make sure that you don't. I do think it is a great idea, in theory. But I think that the media companies will make sure that it isn't so attractive. They can then comply with the gov (who they are clearly in bed with) and still keep doing what they are doing.
Try going through 500 +150kb jpg/gif files and ~10 +1mb flashes _per hour_.
Have you tried Irfanview? Seriously, it is an image viewer, that is what it is coded to do. Firefox is coded to be a web browswer (duh) which just happens to include viewing images. Irfanview is one of those rare, amazing, free programs for Windows that really has no equal. Use it, you'll love it.
You can mount a remote filesystem in KDE without using NFS, ftp, rsync, Samba etc
Just enter in Konqueror fish://user@yourdomain.com (yes that is fish) and you will be asked for your ssh password. Your remote files appear in Konqueror & you can then copy/paste etc to your local filesystem.
OK, now this f'n rocks. There have been many times where I didn't want to set up a mount in order to get files from one computer to another. I usually just use scp, but sometimes it would be easier to just SEE what I need. This is awesome. I use the shell all day, but sometimes using a gui file manager is easier. This helps immensely.
I have to say, this is one of the better articles I have seen in a while on Slashdot. I don't agree with some people's assessments or suggestions, but all it takes is 1 or 2 tips. Fish is definitely one of them. Now I actually have a reason to use konqueror.:)
a lot of the bigger bands today make their money through other means, not record sales. record sales means popularity, nothing more, nothing less.
Well, it can mean royalties. And it depends on if you are talking about musicians, performers, or writers. Songwriters get money when their songs do well. Think of the song Torn performed by Natalie Imbruglia. It was a cover song made to fit popular radio. But the original band that did it didn't complain, because they were getting songwriting royalties. (BTW, the original song, of which there are several versions, is much better IMO)
The principle of common courtesy requires us to describe Sony's actions using Sony's preferred term ("theft"). It's like using the preferred terminology of the group's members to refer to an ethnic group (e.g. "Inuit" rather than "Eskimo").
Methinks you give the story submitter / "editors" way too much credit for putting any thought into these stories.:) I was lambasting the/. crowd for not jumping to the "it isn't THEFT" argument (which I agree with).
It's certainly unusual and unexpected in such a short period of time, but it ought not be surprising that some people may have immune systems that can fight the HIV virus. It's evolution in action. [snip] -- Jesus saved me from my past. He can save you as well. Don't you mean intelligent design in action?
If people can plug in their latset gizmo and have it work 7 times out of 10 then they are happy enough. For most people the computer at work is reasonably well locked down and works 95% of the time. The home machine is a toy, if it fails they can't play for a while and I know many who are happy to assume that, like a lot of consumer electronics, when it stops working you go a get a new one (even if it stopped because it was shot through with viruses and bugs). Most people have too much other stuff to consume their time to care about quality of the underlying technology/infrastructure/design/geology...
What you said is true, today. Tomorrow, it won't be. It's a toy? Don't care about the quality of the underlying techonology? If MS works in the "today", they are screwed. They are so huge, it takes them forever to react to what is going on today, let alone see what is going on in the near future. That is why they will fall. They ALL fall eventually.
Right now, there are millions and millions of people who can avoid using computers and the internet because they are scared of them, because they aren't familiar with them. That will change. Do you realize that in 50 (give or take) years there won't be anyone alive in the industrialized world who grew up not knowing about computers and the internet? (I'll be 85 and hopefullly still here) Kids won't know a world where cellphones and the internet didn't exist. Just as I grew up with televisions, but my parents didn't. The way they grew up with automobiles, but their parents didn't. The way they grew up with telephones, but their parents didn't. It is a shift in the mindset of the populace. The true quality of technology will have to improve, because it will be part of everyone's daily lives. Microsoft is short sighted, IMO. They forgot long ago about technology, and are solely concerned about making money. Period. It will be their downfall, because the demands of technology are only going to increase. I just hope I am alive to see it. I'll be the old coot listening to MP3s while everyone else is... well, listening to whatever will be the hot technology of the day.
Because it seems to only effect Linux and BSD systems (With a different worm). Other systems running PHP are not effected. So yes it is a linux worm. Like many of the Windows worms are not Windows Worms, but IE or OutLook Worms.
So wait, you are saying that the worm brings Linux and BSD systems into existence? That is amazing, and quite cool if you ask me!
Ohhhh, you meant "affect", not "effect". Someone attempting to be pedantic should choose their words carefully.
Photoshop is actually very easy to use, if you understand the basics of selecting, masking, and layering.
* Select an area you want to affect, apply a change.
* Mask areas you do not want to change - at different opacities, if necessary.
* Layer changes to create different effects as desired.
Photoshop is a professional's tool. Aperture is a professional's tool. Framemaker is a professional's tool.
I have never used Photoshop. I don't have the money to buy it, and I don't want to pirate it. I use the GIMP. No, this isn't a rah-rah session for the GIMP, I am sure there are others that will do that. (it frustrates the HELL out of me at times). But I used to do photo editing using xpaint back in the mid-90s. Did some stuff that still holds up today. But I have somewhat of a talent in art, which really really helps. Attention to detail, understanding perspective, light, color. Photoshop can't teach you these things. If you don't have an eye for it, you'll spend hundreds of dollars on software that you can't use.
Get Irfanview and Picasa2. They should take care of 90% of your needs. I still use them, because they do things quickly and easily. If only Irfanview ran on Linux. Best program ever.

But in general, are the people happy? Lots of countries have high unemployment rates. That is not an indicator of if people are happy or not.

So Linux, Unix, and MacOS X are all lumped together? Doesn't quite seem ... fair.
Psst. Nothing on any of your hard drives is permanent.
This sarcastic (yet true) comment, of course, pretty much ensures that I will have a hard drive failure in the near future. :)
This is visionary? Sounds an awful lot like verification and validation to me.
Having worked in QA for 12 years, I would say that by today's software standards, that is visionary to some degree.
I *can* claim that. You probably can too. I ran the numbers a couple of years ago, and here is what I came up with. If you have a net worth of $100,000 then 4 of your dollars is equivalent percentage wise with $1 million of Bill Gates' dollars.
