I also think the car analogy holds some water - Open Source Software is like Ford releasing an unsafe car and telling the users to figure out how to make it road-worthy...
JCL can be converted to Perl scripts (or your favorite scripting language) without much pain. I suspect the most of the conversion could automated.
EBCDIC and ASCII conversion has been around for ages, but figuring out which are the character fields could be a pain, as could the big-endian/little-endian conversion on the binary fields.
Duh! You don't invoke COMPUTE for simple arithmatic, it wastes CPU cycles!
ADD 1 TO COBOL
will suffice, you dont need a GIVING clause unless the result is going elsewhere. Use of a period rather depends on context...
Object Orientation was only invented to make our job more mysterious;-)

good to see someone in this thread knows what they are talking about! As far development halting on this product - so what, where I work they still use Delphi 3 for alot of work. I know moving to a later version would be a PITA, because I've done some work with Delphi 6 and some behaviour had changed (due to you Kylix buggers I believe:)
All employees will be sent to the RMS Political Re-education camp. No, there are no toilets, and they will have to provide their own food for the duration.
Prisoners^H^H^H Trainees will not released^H^H^H certified until they can: a) recite the entire contents of the "Cathedral & the Bazaar" from memory b) chant in unison "death to the capitalist running dogs of Richmond!"c) consistently spell Micro$oft correctly d) correctly indentify all relevent acronyms and software dependencies of our glorious OS
Upon completion, all sucessful devotees^H^H^H comrades^H^H^H candidates will be issued with the collected thoughts of RMS, which they must keep close to their hearts.
Long live our glorious Leader^H^H^H Operating System!
I nosed around the site but couldn't find anything about what is fixed, only blurb about new features.
The last version I tried was useless to me as the refresh button just gets the version from the proxy server, not the website. Is this fixed? Or have they only added new features?

Heh, I've written my own - for Windows. Only useful for COBOL though (flame on!). But it does have a navigable treeview - why no one else has thought of this for when you're wading through a few thousand lines of code is beyond me.
{flamebait} if VIM is the best editor available for Linux it could be a while before its ready for the mainstream{/flamebait}
Seriously, I use both vi & emacs when I have to, but I know IBM had better editors on mainframes 15 years ago, and Windows has plenty of good free editors available. Whats taking you guys so long? Having to memorise keyboard commands is not an intuitive interface.
UK keyboards piss me off - switching @ and " positions compared to the US layout. Of course plenty of software and websites "know" that shift-2 is the @, just to add to the fun.
gaah - the only movie where they killed off the star 2/3 thru the movie - that boat was cool. If they had killed of Costner instead I wouldn't have minded at all...

You po' Merkins miss out on the great Steve Bell, still going strong in the Guardian (though unfortunately not on their website). Look out for his "If..." and older "Maggie's Farm" strips. It's a shame you've also missed out on his recent interpretations of Bush Jnr. - truly savage:-)
not really - they're both Murdoch rags. The same scumbag who owns Fox. The same scumbag who wants to put the BBC out of business. The same scumbag who wants everybody dumbed down to the point of believing the drivel he puts out. All the journalists who had any integrity at the Times fled like rats leaving a sinking ship when he took over. It is now comparable to USA Today. At least the Sun has boobs!

You are both wrong.
COMPUTE Y = X + 2
or
ADD 2 TO X GIVING Y
although the COMPUTE statement carries a bigger overhead, so should not be used for simple arithmatic.

I've heard many adjectives used about X windows, but this is the first polite one!
"free as in beer" is the same as "free as in money", silly.
It is not the same as "free as in not a slave". Where IE falls in all this I leave as an excercise for the reader...

For everything else I use PFE (again Windows).
P.S. long live Kibo!

Hell no, the windows key is a PITA, at least for FPS keyboarders. I like my old IBM keyboard.
For getting at the desktop, just created a shortcut to Explorer and assign it a keyboard shortcut like alt-ctrl-E, which you can't hit by accident.
