    I am in the process of opening a retail store, and I'm writing my own POS. I'm not using Linux. Why? The sheer complexity. I'm writing a very simple VB app against an Oracle back end, using the COM object supplied by the scanner companies. W2K is rock solid. Linux may be solid too, but there's nothing as simple, and as easy to modify as a well-written VB app for the front end. I certainly don't want to write some cryptic C app!

    PBS used to be taxpayer/government funded. Sometime in the last 5 years or so, the gov't stopped most of it's support or public TV. Public TV in the US is largely in the process of dying. Without gov't handouts, it's impossible to scrounge up enough money from begging to support a television station. PBS has got more and more ads every single day.

    Stupid fucking admins... there's a tool available for W2K boxes that checks to make sure all security patches have been applied to all server software up to the minute. All you gotta do is run it! It works great. Dumb fuckers.

    No, I'm not saying just capitulate to everything... it's just that unless it REALLY means something to you, and you can actually have any kind of impact whatsoever... what's the point? I don't care what happens to MS. I'm not a lawyer, I'm not writing actual OS code, and I'm not a CEO of a competing company. I'll use whatever works for me, and get on to more important things in my life. I mean, if the big Linux/MS thing really *is* your life, then by all means, enjoy. I just don't honestly believe that as an individual who uses one of them, I can't really have any impact, and even in the long term for my life, it really doesn't matter what OS I happen to be using.

    Again, here's another example of a myopic view of the world. Most people don't know what Linux is, never mind use it, never mind play DVD's with it. Buy a Playstation for $200, put a movie in, and get on with the rest of your life.

    But the fact is that a large part of Slashdotters are either college kids or uber-geeks that quite honestly, have nothing better to do. I think that you're view is pretty typical... once you grow up and get a "life", then this stuff gets put in perspective for most people. This is pretty irrelevant in th e grand scheme of things. Shit, it's just software. Who, outside of this little community actually cares? I mean, shit, we're not talking about saving the planet from terrorism here. It's just software. The world will go on just fine regardless of who "wins" assuming that one "side" will actuall "win". Life goes on.

    A tresspass comes about when you notify someone else that they cannot use your private property. Their email system is definately private property. Same in real property. It's not illegal for Jehova's Witnesses to come on your property to try to indoctrinate you, but if you tell them "if you come back again, then you'll be tresspassing", if they come back again, you call the sheriff and have them thrown off the land. That's not a civil action, but a legal action. You could get a restraining roder against them, but suing them isn't really possible unless they've casued you harm. You *can* have the offenders thrown in jail, though. If this moron was told by Intel not to use their email system anymore, then he's tresspassing by continuing to use it. He should be thrown in jail for tresspassing.

    It's simple. Get rid of the land line. Cell phones are cheaper and easier. Telemarketers don't have cell phone numbers. Of course, if you use your land line for dial-up like I do, we just removed all of our telephones in the house. No telemarketers. Simple.

    That's not the point. The point is that it's a dumb name. It's childish. Nobody, other than uber geeks, is going to buy a product named "Lindows".

    You obviously don't know what "monopoly" means:

    Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service

    My point is that it's impossible for Microsoft to be a monopoly at the same time that Linux is successful.

    I'm asking the Slashdot populace: which is it, then? I'm really curious as to what most people think.

    The denizens of Slashdot declare that MS's monopoly is wrong. At the same time, MS is dead, and Linux has taken over.
    Funny, I thought that the definition of a monopoly is NO competition.
    So which is it kids? Is there a monopoly, in which case Linux is an abject failure, or is Linux a success, in which case there really is no monopoly?

    So then, what, should Microsoft be advertising Linux? Give me a fucking break. Software is a business. Linux can't compete because it's not run as a business. The "choice" is out there. The fact that nobody wants to "choose" Linux certainly isn't Microsoft's fault.

    From the article: Red Hat chief technology officer Michael Tiemann said computer makers had rebuffed his attempts in recent years to pre-install the Linux operating system on their machines because they feared Microsoft's response.
    I don't think this is a valid argument from the manufacturers. If Dell or Gateway or Compaq started preloading Linux on their machines, what is microsoft going to do? Say, "OK, we aren't selling windows licenses to Dell anymore." I don't think so. Especially since that is where they get their huge user base


    Dell DID sell boxes with Linux on them. But you know what... NOBODY BOUGHT THEM! Choice has nothing to do with it. There IS choice. The simple fact is that MS's products meet the needs of most of the people out there at a reasonable price.
