  1. Re:Different perspective on Intel: No Rush to 64-bit Desktop · · Score: 1

How's this for a different perspective: Bloat can be good (talking about memory use here).

There are always engineering/design tradoffs. One tradeoff has always been keeping the memory footprint small vs. speed.

Wouln't it be nice if Photoshop didn't have to rely on a scratch disk for operations.

Wouldn't it be nice for Photoshop and other apps to be able to keep more levels of "undo" in RAM instead of having to cache intermediate steps on a drive or not having them available at all.

Your browser could cache more data in RAM instead of on the drive.

There are many ways that additonal address space can be used to benefit the user. If a developer elects to use those resourses to make their application faster, more robust, more portable, easier to maintain, or save development resources, isn't that a good thing?

  2. Re:Bandwidth on Intel: No Rush to 64-bit Desktop · · Score: 1

First a question, is that bandwidth guaranteed? For video capture you don't want any dropped frames.

For processing video there are operations that are limited by how fast you can read in the file, not by real-time bandwidth.

As for needing >4 GB RAM, wouldn't it be nice to perform operations and view the results without having to buffer to a drive (which can slow the process) in the event you want to undo it anyway?

Of course I'm just an amature making home-movies nobody else wants to see into home-DVDs and VCDs that pretty much nobody else wants to see.

It could communicate with your SPOT Socks (SPOcks?) to determine your current weight and display it along with how much its gone up or down since the last time you were in the refrigerator.

Being our friend who takes care of us, MS will of course have added code so the magnet will tell the refrigerator to lock the door if our current weight is above the last recorded weight. Locking out growing kids will be fixed in a later release.

While I'm standing there waiting to lose weight, I can buy and sell stocks based on the reliable info displayed on the refrigerator maget, because I know microelectronics receiving data via RF work so flawlessly when glued to the back of a big magnet.

The beachball problem is typically an application problem, not an OS problem. For example, I'll bet you have no problem switching to and using another app, but as soon as you switch back to "that app", you see tha ball again.

The reason? That app has a process that hasn't finished and can't do anything else until its done. Usually happens with apps that run in a single thread. The OS is just nice enough to throw up the beach ball to let you know that app is busy because the application wasn't written to handle anything else until its done.
