This scares me... when politics modifies actual scientific data. You, as a scientist or statistician (in/some/ capacity) have an obligation to the data. Society based of flawed data will itself be flawed. Having crazy young girls at 14 birthing kids has ramifications for families, for health care providers, for schools.
Lets start with prenatal care. I heard zero (0) gain - from a Hopkins Ph.D.
Also, the last chart I saw on least number of problems was at age 14, with excellent rates until about 22, where it begins to climb appreciably, then takes off in late 30s to 40s. Which may very well match your data, but the incredibly low rate at 14 was very surprising to myself and I would have though you'd mention it if you saw it.
Just some more data... Their could be geographical bias in those numbers.
How does this "promote the useful arts and sciences"?
I'd love to see this go to court. At no point does the government have a right to have its own intellectual property, and protection. (This does not include "classified information" which does not fall under "intellectual property" laws.)
There was no hand waving, I just didn't bother to name them all. For factors that influence surface temperatures, here are some, but I still won't name all of them:
Orbital location (to sun)
Axial Orientation (to sun)
Solar output (from sun)
Oceanic circulations - currents
Oceanic oscilations - Pacific Multidecadal, El Nino, La Nina, Alantic Multi-decadal.
Albedo feed-backs from all prior conditions.
So there are six right there, not even taking into account atmospheric gasses.
We are having a record cold year/winter because the PDO has shifted to cool, and solar radiation and activity are at an all-time low. Given the degree of the cold snap, it still shows that those multi-decadal cycles have far more influence on our surface temps than do atmospheric gasses.
We live on the surface, not in the clouds like the Jetsons.
Um, no. Not in the US. If a unit had a failure leading to death, the family would sue, the hospital, and the equipment manufacturer for multiple millions each.
See, we've moved past just being happy to be alive. We now need to have someone else be responsible for providing for our existence too. That's how good it is here in America!
You do know that the CO2 forcing that is "proven" only occurs in closed systems with uniform CO2 distribution?
You do know that the Earth is not a closed system, and CO2 is not uniform throughout the atmosphere. Read the recent NASA AIRS satellite paper that describes two hemispheres with completely different carbon cycles and distributions.
Having non-uniform distribution means there are escape routes OUT of the Earth's atmosphere, and remember the Earth isn't a closed sytem because we radiate heat out constantly, but most of the time there are 12 hours a day where we radiate more than we absorb.
Given that we have multi-decadal weather patterns, and the sun itself (where we get all the damn heat to start with) is on a 11-year pattern, and with the data we have, we cannot yet break our temperature down into what cycle is responsible for what amount of temperature variation.
Part of the "problem" (bias against) western medicine is when using western medicine, you engage a huge apparatus. You have you doctor, which may or may not order scientific and painful tests. You have testing labs that take time to get results, you have to deal with your insurance company.
Next, usually for the types of problems which people engage holistic medicine for is of the minor (at first) variety. People don't worry about chen/shen balancing if they have a compound fracture, but they'll go is there is a minor chronic problem. The idea here is that something small thew their system out of whack, and it'll take only a proportional response to restore it. Unfortunately, problems develop and continue to, unless fixed.
Finally, most herbal solutions can be bought and prepared in the home. Its a comforting idea that you can cure yourself. It keeps you feeling in control, that you're doing something. And what you're doing is relatively easy, usually a tea. Contrast that with the traditional delivery method of an I.V. of western medicine.
I have to admit western medicine to me seems forced and cold. There is an attractive, warm side to natural therapies. But you can bet that I'll rely on science every time. But for those (not us slashdotters) who haven't seen and appreciate the miracles of science, western medicine seems like just as much magic and voodoo as holistic medicine, but with a colder, more expensive experience.
I struggle to understand the counter perspective, but I think it has something to do with survival. You can choose the path of easiest survival - the least effort, or you can choose the path that might be harder for you. Given the conditions in rural China, it seems that any internet access at all is a luxury.
We have our own problems here in the states though. We constantly don't abide by our Constitution, preferring to look the other way for an easier time. Like Obama citizenship was never tested. Also 3 senators are being appointed to the senate without meeting minimum age requirements. We tax rather than cut back. Our problem is not with the control of information, but rather what we choose to listen to.
I might actually like not having more than one view. It'll avoid the annoying cognitive dissonance. It'll keep me ignorantly and blissfully happy, not knowing what we're doing is wrong. Its easier to close our mind than pursue the truth.
I had the industry standard "scratch test". If you are noy familir, here's how it works: You are injected with saline just under the skin. You are injected with histamine just under the skin. If the results of those two controls are normal (meaning that the histamine reacted and the saline didn't) then you proceed with the rest of the injections. You get 5 sets of each test at increasing concentrations. You wait 15 minutes between sets and note the reaction. You then are sent home with a sheet where you note any delayed reactions.
Yes and No. In a normal functioning system you are correct. Allergies to human proteins would be incompatible with human life. And indeed this happens with autoimmune diseases like lupus and arthritis. However, those aren't allergies.
While there are large overlaps in proteins, different species make different proteins. These are most often what make up allergies because in a normally functioning immune system it does not make antibodies to is own body chemistry. Allergies are learned responses. This is why people can eat something new (like a kiwi fruit) once and not die, but can become allergic. The immune system has learned to target those kiwi proteins.
Well, as you point out, its legal status is in question.
First there is no constitutional amendment banning it in all of the United States. What you have then is an illegal enforcement effort by the feds. The federal government is limited (in theory) by the constitution. Here, they can only claim jurisdiction over the first sale INTO the United States and interstate commerce. In theory, any substance originating in-state and consumed in-state never enters federal jurisdiction.
This is where our income tax comes into play. The federal government empowered with our tax dollars threatens to pull the plug on funding, (usually transportation funds) meaning the state caves. This of course violates state sovereignty, but it is what it is.
Then there is the tax window in D.C. Marijuana has a tax on it. Without the tax stamp, you are in possession of essentially smuggled goods. But if you think you'll just go there and py the tax and be in the clear with the feds, you're wrong. No one mans the window, so it is impossible to get the stamps for it.
Finally, you have the alcohol and tobacco lobby thinking they'll loose big if its ever legalized.
As for what is legalized. I was thinking about this on the way into work today. Anything that grows naturally and is non-addictive. This to my knowledge means the wacky tabacky, peyote, and shrooms. Opiates are addicting, and anything else is manufactured (cocaine, crystal meth, etc).
Helminthic therapy is the intentional infection of a person with a parasite. The parasite mitigates the immune response of the immune system. The idea is to choose a helminth (parasite) that 1) can't replicate in the body and 2) won't have any adverse side effects. Luckily there are two such species of parasite. These worms live in in the intestine and are well-tolerated by most individuals.
The effects of these buggers is reduces asthma, allergies, arthritis, and other issue from over-active immune systems.
The idea is that the human immune system evolved with these parasites, so they are factored into a balanced immune system. Clean societies don't have these, so the immune system overreacts, thus causing problems.
I plan to get it, (for my food allergies) but it is not yet accepted by western medicine.
PS. I am allergic to beef, chicken, egg (egg is used for the flu shot), all shellfish, corn, rye barley... the list goes on. I can't even drink beer, unless it is a special sorghum beer.
Relative Humidity is a measurement, where all things remaining constant except temperature, as the temperature goes up, the relative humidity goes down. The "blazing sun" thus "dries the air". Though I do recommend reading the "misconceptions" section of the aforementioned article.
Indeed it is. Possession id 9/10ths of the law. However, there are people who would leverage physical or other peculiar aspects. The need the government to give everyone equal protection arises, else you have anarchy.
Even though the parent is joking, yours is no comparison.
Before entering into any contract you need to see if the contract is likely to be honored. This is called due diligence. I'm tired of this culture of victimization. No one is going to look out for you. You are responsible for yourself. The government is there only to provide protection of your property. The individuals aggrieved by the company have a right for their case to be heard in court. However, doing due diligence to minimize the likelihood of getting there is your responsibility. While legally entitled, you cannot be irresponsible in everything you do and go crying to the government. It is just not an effective strategy. It'll cost you money and time, an neither are in large supply.
The idea of a "crime" dates back to the time when kings went looking to get involved in the affairs of others. He inserted himself into every suit claiming that the controversy disturbed his peace and extracted a fine. Eventually crimes against the state by themselves were recognized, where you didn't need any actual harm to prosecute.

Being college educated (B.S. Comp Sci) and with all my generally insightful comments, I add my college experiences to the pool. Using my input therefore, is advantaging yourself at my expense (because I paid for college myself - no loans, took me 7 years though). Therefore, I am instituting the following policy:

Are we defining "less" as by volume, or molecules?
If it is being compressed, no.
Actually this post from JPL contradicts your statement.
It is NOT La Nina.

Your duty is to the data.
Um I heard completely different.

It seems odd that scientists now claim that something (matter) is creating from fluctuations in the nothing (vacuum).
Previously, the audacity was only had by bankers creating value from no-documentation mortgage-backed securities.

Has anyone else gotten a birthday reminder on myspace, only to log in and find that no one is actually having a birthday?
Seems like a great way to drive up the hit count.
