  1. Inticing on MPAA vs. Television · · Score: 2, Insightful

Whenever someone comes out with new technology to prevent piracy, all it does is spur interest in trying to get by it. For instance, the "protected CDs" that could be gotten around with a marker. If they are serious about it, they need to implement the technology without letting the world know first, that way there will at least be a slow down before people realize it and get around it. It's always just a matter of time.

Put one of these on a wall and then show the image of a door or passage and watch as the unsuspecting people walk right into it.

But more seriously, maybe something like this could be a replacement for windows (the things made of glass, not the OS). If there are cameras on the outside, this could just show the image on the wall. Make places more secure anyway, if there are no windows for people to break in through. I think that this would be able to succeed over current TVs because from the way it sounds, you can make some very large surfaces with it.

I don't think so. Nothing is deleted: if you want to read the raw, uncut Slashdot, simply set your threshold to -1 and go crazy! This system is simply a method for us to try to work together to categorize the thousands of comments that are posted each day in such a way that we can benefit from the wisdom contained in the discussions. It's in there! It just takes some work to find it.

If my memory of science serves me right, which it could very possibly not, one of the earliest periodic tables had many gaps. They were just assuming that there would be elements to fill in those empty spots, and amazingly (for that early of science), they were correct.

  14. Re:You can make money? on Can Newspapers Save Local Music? · · Score: 1

The point is that filesharing isn't evil, as the RIAA seems to try to make it sound. An another point, imagine you had two pieces of software, one shareware, and one freeware. Now, the shareware version does nothing but constantly bug you with messages telling you to register and give them money, but the freeware version does exactly shareware version does, but doesn't bug you with "register me" messages. Which would you rather give money to?

  16. You can make money? on Can Newspapers Save Local Music? · · Score: 2, Interesting

"You mean," I ask, "you guys sell CDs through your Web site, and play concerts, and don't have a major record contract, and you manage to make a living as full-time musicians?"

"Yes, we're making a living, Cliff says. "We're all full-time musicians."

What's this? You can share your music AND make money. And I thought the RIAA was telling the truth. But really, I think that song-sharing is a great idea. A lot of times, I'll download the music just to see if I'd like to buy the CD; and more often then not, I do. Also, I think that it makes the artists look very favorable when they actually let you download their music, so you are more apt to want to support them over a group who tries to destroy and user with a ripped, illegal version of their song.

Actually, at the Wal-Mart where I live, they do sell some Computers. HPs if I remember correctly. Not sure of the OS (or lack-thereof), but I'd guess Windows.

as a result, people still have to buy a windows/mac PC ... and get online to order, hunh?

Now they can double their profit, sell you a computer so you can buy a computer.
