Ok, not to be a nit-pick, but man knew the world was round even long ago (hopefully not in a galaxy far away as this would indicate we were transplanted by flying saucers). The Greeks pretty much *knew* the Earth was round. Even before Columbus the notion that the Earth was flat was not as prevelant as most people believed (actually most people probably never considered it).

Anyway, the neatest proof the Earth is curved was done by some ancient Greek guy who's name I can't recall. Anyway, there was this well that on a certain day didn't cast any shadow (ie the sun was directly overhead). So he measured the angle of the sun where he was, and then triangulating concluded the Earth was curved (it would be logical that the Earth was also round, but not proven conclusively). Of course someone will say that without knowing the distance of the sun this wouldn't be possible, however if one took further readings in other spots they would discover inconsistencies.

Just to clarify, diamond is not the most stable form of carbon at 1 atmosphere and room temperature. At higher temperature/pressures it is more stable (otherwise it wouldn't freakin' form ;0)

Anyway, your friend would be correct, under normal conditions diamonds will eventually turn into carbon (of course there's just the small detail of taking a short eternity to happen).

Anyway, I'm not sure (I'm too lazy to look it up, if its even in any of the reference materials to begin with) but Buckyballs may be the most stable form of carbon. The molecular structure is almost as strong as diamond as well. Which would be why carbon nanotubes would actually be feasible to build a space elevator btw (hrm, wonder if that means diamond would work as well... *shudder* thats all we need, DeBeers owning the moon!)

um... if a program is licensed under the GPL, you can't do whatever you want. You can only do whatever you want as long as you don't violate the GPL. Which means you can't do some things you might want to do... So if you want to do them, you can't do anything you want.

So yes, I'm even more right than I thought (but I did think I was that right... ) So maybe you're just wrong?? But you're right, you don't have to release GPL programs (big issue with online chess servers).

Hrm, I believe I shouldn't post comments at 3AM judging by what I've just written... of course why I was bored enough to respond to the orginal troll is beyond me... I think I'll go play some chess on FICS (www.freechess.org).

    Ok, I'll bite.

I didn't actually manage to get through the whole thing (about the first ten points), but basically they all seemed to deal with how the GPL could infect your software and impose certain responsibilities on you. Of course almost all of these points only affect you only if you actually develop your own inhouse programs. Horror of horrors, you can't "borrow" the code and do with it whatever you want ala BSD. I'd like to know how many companies use Windows source in their programs ;0)

Basically, this just creates FUD in the minds of business execs who don't understand software licenses to begin with. Most just pay for the software and use it as is. Very few would even think to ask if they could modify the program themselves! So this whole thing can be safely ignored by them (well, when they pirate the software by using it on home computers they'd have to remember not to copy the source, otherwise they're not breaking any laws!)

So unless we actually modify the software we run to begin with (and I assume since this is an MS doc, they're trying to get you to use MS products), how would using a GPL program be any different for the majority of users? For the minority who still write their own stuff, they should darn well be familiar with software licenses already!

Anyway, it has everything that made me love SG:SG1, of course I've heard that one of the producers left because the suits wanted more gun fights and whatnot, but I haven't seen it yet (at least the plot and character devel, are still there). So, I'm holding out hope.

Sucks you can't see Farscape, that is a good show (although sci-fi has this habit of cancelling shows I like, I'm sorry but I-MAN just ruled) and maybe I'm in a minority, but I actually like Enterprise. Yes, it does have some blatantly obvious sexual suggestions, but it dosn't dictate the show.

If they can replace him with a believable character all well and good. However, ratings have been dropping steadily. It is possible to replace a character, but it makes it that much harder to bring back the viewers that left. So that puts all the more pressure on. A miracle is what they need.

That said, execs aren't idiots (well not total idiots). Even they should be able to figure out their meddling is hurting the show. So its entirely possible Daniel will be reincarnated using some mysterious alien artifact at the beginning of the season. Of course thats assuming the suits want it saved...

This goes a bit deeper than just not waiting for titles to appear on linux. I do have two loki games (Quake 3 and Heroes of Might and Magic III) however all the other games I have purchased do not have linux versions. I could undoubtably run some of these games through wine, but this really defeats the purpose if you want games written for linux.

That said, Neverwinter Nights, which I am eagerly awaiting, will have a linux version which I do plan to purchase. Maybe Linux is catching up after all.

No, the problem is not that we won't pay, the problem is that most people still have a win9x partition to play games on and we don't want to wait a few months for a linux version.

Also despite great strides in the desktop area I still think of my linux boxen as development platforms or servers, I don't play games on them, I program and do real work. Putting mere games on them would be demeaning to them!

  18. ICC history on 4th Computer Chess Tournament · · Score: 5, Interesting

It pains me that on a site dedicated to open source that we should entirely ignore the history if ICC. Once there was the Internet Chess Server (ICS) which was free, source could be obtained and all. Then one of the people maintaining the server decided to make it propietary and charge for membership. Of course a splinter group decided they wanted a truly free server and that became the Free Internet Chess Server (www.freechess.org), however their lofty ideals came to an end when they saw others using their ideas and not giving back to the community (GPL does not stipulate you must distribute your software) and since then the version of the server software available to download as not been updated.

Now I don't mean to rant about percieved evils, whats done is done, but for a site dedicated to open source I believe this must be mentioned.
