As one of your "end users" I would like to give you some praise. Following the guidance in your documentation (and elsewhere), I did not include the standard GNOME packages in my Slack install. Instead I downloaded the dropline installer and executed.

"It just works." The tweaks you've made to the default desktop (i.e. the icons, even the wallpaper) are sweet. The interface is really consistent, and everything (i.e. menu options, etc.) is in the right place.

    Just wanted to say thanks!

Mod parent up some more, because this is exactly what happens in situations like these. The Feds have near infinite resources, at least in relation to yours. While you take out a second mortgage on your house to pay bail, legal fees, etc., all the Feds have to do is deficit spend.

Unless you have wads of cash, can defend yourself (not sure if you can even do this anymore in certain circumstances), or have a fetish for prison life, you would take the deal too.

They know that they can take your property (computers, domains, etc.) without your doing anything about it, because the power relations are so heavily in their favor. This is, of course, before your guilt or innocence has been determined. The sad (and frightening) part is that such practices constitute only the first wave of the fun and games to come (i.e. Patriot II and its successors).

A BIOS password only works if the attacker doesn't want you to know your system was compromised. If the attacker has no qualms about stealing your box, a simple removal of the motherboard battery (or something similar) will clear CMOS and eliminate the password. All this is, of course, not the point.

Physical security is a necessity, and this security often involves a policy that applies to the entire environment surrounding your computer systems, including such things as garbage compacting and making sure the pizza guy stays at the receptionist's desk.

For argument's sake, let's say you've set a BIOS password and whatnot. What stops a sophisticated attacker from attaching a hardware key logger (some device that goes between the keyboard cable and the keyboard port on the back of your computer) or hiding a small hub and computer combo somewhere near the target to do a little promiscuous sniffing (yes these are determined attackers, like industrial spies)?

BTW, in addition to your precautions, you should also disable netboot and boot via USB device.

The whole point of the complaint is that Microsoft has been and is working hard to prevent alternatives.

You know, when I go to Dell's web site, I can configure a machine. Popup menus allow me to choose various configuration options. Guess what choices I get for Operating System? Let's not even bring up Free software. Let's just compare to, say a DVD player. The choice is DVD or No DVD. How about Windows or No OS? Shipping a CD hardware diagnostic would be the extent of the "support" they would have to provide. Just as they now say, insert the Windows CD to reformat and reinstall -- click. They could say -- insert the Diagnostic CD to proove that the hardware works perfectly -- click.

There are hordes of online vendors that will sell you a box sans OS. Many of these computers are superior (in components and in overall build) to the PC that Dell will sell you. Many are also less expensive. These days you can even walk into CompUSA and leave with a "fresh" PC and a copy of RedHat. No need to touch a Microsoft product!

Sure, Dell won't sell you a PC without Windows, due to an obvious relationship with Microsoft, but Dell is hardly the only distributor of computers.

You have a choice! Just because your fellow computer buyers are either ignorant of the alternatives or otherwise displeased with them does not mean that they are forced to use Windows!

If Linux came preinstalled on the average consumer Dell, Dell would be fielding numerous support calls each day to the tune of: "My husband bought a new sound card, and the computer says I must rebuild the kernel." Imagine the support tech leading the poor user through xconfig, menuconfig, or *shudders* config.

The worst thing for Linux would be a side-by-side comparison with Windows (or OS X) in the homes of average computer users. Word of mouth would spread quickly, prejudices would be formed, and Linux would be forever taboo on the desktop.

    ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

in the empty box that appears, then click Apply and restart your PC. We found that this helped clean up game jerkiness because it reduces the background file swapping that causes video hiccups and pauses."

This tip was for XP, by the way. I tried this on my machine (512MB), and the swapping that started during UT2K3 sessions has stopped. Maybe it will work for you.

Sorry, but it sounds like you haven't installed Windows XP. The days of 5 restarts and floppy-disk-drivers are mostly gone.

Installing Win XP was a breeze on a DIY box with a new mobo, CPU, and graphics card (other components were only relatively new). The install did not need any babysitting, and the only halt was for input during the "Activation" phase.

I've run Slackware 7 through 9 beta (current), and never really found it difficult to install. Very straightforward and minimal. We won't talk about PhatLinux, X, and Trident cards.

Comparatively, Windows, in all its previous incarnations, has presented various "issues" during the install. Intel NIC? "Sorry, where's your driver disk?" Logitech USB Mouse? "This restart was brought to you buy Plug-and-Play."

XP was, however, painless to install. Politics of "Activation" aside, I found it easier than all the above. YMMV
