1. Most people are educated AND materialistic. As food is not an issue here, they could easily choose (remember we have birth control) to have twenty kids per couple and let them leave a simple life, but as we are educated and know about exponential growth we don't, and as we are materialistic, we know we have to choose between TVs, computers, two cars and a 200m home and the 20 kids, so we choose the former, and have 1.5 kids per couple.
2. A few people are more well-off (this could be described as earning more than one must spend and spare, so to include less rich people who value kids more than stuff) and will breed at rates not very high (because of the materialism) but still higher than sustainability rate. I grant you that the overall rate is still rather low ( 2.1), eventhough it is going up. The fact remains they are not contributing positively to relieve the overpopulation problem.
Suppose we had enough food (with enough logistics and no corruption) to feed the planet. What do you think people no longer starving would do ? They would just breed a couple more kids until food reserves are overspent again, as do more well off families in the West.
There is no fundamental difference between the First World spending more fuel than it can afford, and the Third World breeding more people than it can afford. And I have stopped long time ago to believe that having the First World finance the future Third World's starvation is the way to go. The only fixable problems of the Third World should be solved not with unsustainable developement but with better organisation and ending corruption (which is what we should do in the First World too).
IANACD (Chip Designer), but a significant part of the cost in chip design is solving RF interferences, signal quality decrease after it has passed x gates. There is no actual need to do this design twice. Furthermore, not having to mux and demux, encode and decode data between the cpu core and the gpu might make them much more efficient.
Furthermore, every gpu nvidia or ati makes has currently to be tested for compatibility with a large range of cpus. If each gpu core has only one matching cpu, integration gets much easier.
So these are not criminal but civil lawsuits. I know you can't legally take an insurance to protect you from the consequences of your crimes, but what about civil lawsuits/settlements ?
Oh you mean the Linux that runs every windows app seamlessly ('just by using wine'). The one where running up to date drivers, seeing flash or running java applets is just a matter of downloading and manually installing binaries that were compiled especially for your distro, because having it there out of the box was a violation of the integrator's highly moral standards ?
Just a small question regarding wine from an European. Is wine that expensive in the US ? It seems to me that besides not being legally accessible to 21- ers, it is bloody expensive.
So how much costs a drinkable bottle (4-5 here)? How much for a good bottle (12-17)? how much for one at a restaurant (20-50) ? I am not talking about "1985 was a fantastic year" here, just recent years wines.
This is not fud, this is the user experience I have on a fucking existing piece of hardware running windows mobile 5. Like I told you, we (the carriers in Belgium) don't modify the phones further than some cosmetic branding, as there is no incentive. The fucking phones could be bought without the clamping in independent stores.
My carrier is me and my colleagues, and the only things I would complain about is the insulting salary.
Windows Mobile sucks. It is a very bad OS. Integration and ergonomics are just not there, neither is interactivity and real time. To give a few examples: * no possibility to press just once to send an SMS. One has to tap at least 4 times to get there. * When calling a missed call phone number, expect the OS to ask you if the phone number is correctly spelt (sucker, it's YOUR input!) * Voice and SMS logic are separate. No easy options to text a voice contact (redial/missed call/busy call), or to call an SMS contact * No easy way to shut down an application after use, it will just keep running, even if resources are low, until killed or explicitly exited * Sometimes, answering a call to kill a loud ringtone is impossible, because some random unrelated window was open * SMSes are randomly deleted. * Eventhough SMSes are displayed on top of the screen at reception, you have to explicitly open them to have them marked as read. Same goes for the otherwise very boring delivery receipts * Activesync over Bluetooth has to be triggered manually, and is abysmally slow. Over USB it is only usably slow, eventhough 30secs seems like a lot of time when there is no time * minor, but no MP3 ringtones * after dialing, the soft keypad is automatically minimized, which is very bad for IVRs
I could go on for hours. A $50 Nokia provides a better user experience for phone services than the 500$ HTC P3300 that I in fact decided to sell after a month of use. (I have a very decent nokia N70 which I just needed to refurbish for further use)
Disclaimer: I work at a mobile operator. Our rates are rather high compared to the competition, but in Belgium is is explicitly forbidden to SIMlock. I love that. Because SIMlocking is forbidden, there are no subsidised phones (it is actually even forbidden to sell a SIM card with a phone, our legal department took care of getting this banned as the competition did a better job at it), which means people have to buy them from retail at full price, which means feature are rarely blocked.
Even if we paid Indians $1 an hour, at a rate of even 100 transistors per hour, this would cost $2m to make one of them and this is not counting material. How many government agencies can afford that ?
The day wikipedia dies will be like those days when the most popular P2P service of the day gets shut down by the MAFIAA: they get replaced by better ones, quite quicklier than if slowing fading into irrelevance. Wikipedia is not an end, it's a means.
If you want (shallow) people to find you attractive, you should not settle for less than a Ferrari. But you don't. Because you cannot afford it. So you take compromises.
It should be the same for assault tanks like SUVs: the planet really cannot afford them. So people should take compromises.
Would the family be more comfortable in an SUV than in an MPV? Problably, not taking into account the money that could have been spent better on housing or education. Would daily (or even holiday-) travel be unbearable in an MPV / station wagon ? No. I know. Our parents didn't need them and they had standards of living very comparable to the current ones. Heck, I went up and down France at least five times on the backseat of a Renault 4.
You should probably not put an adult on these retractable seats (I've been on one and it's not ideal), but for kids it's OK. The room for the seventh seat is usable for for what you want.
I wouldn't recommend going on a camping trip with 6 passengers with one, but then again I wouldn't recommend buying a car because of a two weeks camping holiday.
Why does the dad have to come with them to the Walmart ? If the dad is available, he should be babysitting his kids while the mom goes shopping. Besides, there are very safe compact MPVs available with retractable seats, allowing up to five kids in the back.
I'll give you a counter example: I am a paraglider pilot. We generally manage to squeeze FOUR adults, plus FOUR huge bags. They are really huge, you could carry a person in them. And that's in a station wagon. Make it easily SIX in a minivan.
Driving hundreds of kilometers in the station wagons is not uncommon as we are from a flat country and need hills to take off.
And I have not started yet about the assault tank structure of SUVs. Give me a break; as paraglider pilots, WE are driving in muddy, hilly terrain. And we are happy with our station wagons or superminis for all it matters. An SUV is not needed, especially with leather seats.
Ironically, as paraglider pilots, we are well aware that driving 500km for generally nothing, potentially a 5 minutes flight and exceptionally a 3 hour cross country flight is not the summum of fuel efficiency. But at least we are not going there with a road monster that could be better used by the soccer mom who needs it for her groceries.
Don't make it a bad thing for the family with 4 kids to drive an SUV because they need the space, make it bad that no one seems interested in solutions to powering these vehicles differently.
You don't need a 2 tons SUV for that. A 800kg station wagon would do. Did YOUR mother need a 2 tons SUV ? Did she have lower living standards ? Probably not even...
I see two things happening in the West.

Like for the OLPC, I'll gladly pay $200 for mine if it subsidizes a poor billionaire's
Obligatory "Windows Vista will now download in less than 2 days" post
So these are not criminal but civil lawsuits. I know you can't legally take an insurance to protect you from the consequences of your crimes, but what about civil lawsuits/settlements ?
So, when is the PIAA (Pirate Industry Association of America) going to sue p2p networks ?

No, God played a trick on you, it made it look like it is 25m years old to challenge you faith.

An average audiophile will find a FLAC tune worse than the equivalent CD.
