  2. Linux for Government OS on New Antitrust Complaint Filed Against Microsoft · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well, IMHO, haveing the governments OS be Open Source is a good thing. The government is the single largest consumer of goods and services in the country, for almost every country you can think of. Since the the purpose of government should be something along the lines of "...promote the general welfare...", I believe that all non-classified government software projects should be public domain of the country involved. Open Source supports this, and closed source prevents it.

  15. Re:Seeing as you're already drugging your kid... on Dealing with ADHD and Other Problems in Young Children? · · Score: 2, Insightful
Yes, methylphenidate is not terribly different than methamphetamine. To "normal" people. In ADHD children and adults, it actually has the opposite effect. If your child gets more hyperactive on Ritalin, then he/she does not have ADHD. There are a number of other possibilities, with similar appearances. In this case, the poster has seen a dramatic improvement with Ritaln, so he probably has correct diagnosis, and is helping his child.

That said, yes... I have ADHD, as well. I was not diagnosed as a child, and never had the opporunity to try any kind of durg therapy until I became an adult.
Methylphenidate helps me. A lot. I am able to concentrate, and maintain focus in a way that is totally alien to my normal mindset. Because of that, I only take it when I need it. When I have a very pressing deadline, or a very hectic schedule, and cannot afford to lose time to my mind's diversions.

Perhaps if I had been on Ritalin since I was first tested at the age of 6, then I would want it regularly. Right now, when I'm on Ritalin I feel like a different human being. At times, that's exactly what I need, but other times, I just want to be myself. Often, when I am using methylphenidate at work, I stop taking it on weekends.

If you have a child who may have ADHD, be careful. Be sure of the diagnosis. If Ritalin helps, then see if the child likes it. Some children would rather be on medication than feel like their brain is going out of control. Other's would rather deal with the consequences of ADHD than feel like their mind is in slow motion. In this instance, get the best advice you can get, but let your child join in the decision process.

Consult a physician about any change in your child's medications. Some doctor's believe that not keeping a continual dosage can be harmful.

    Good Luck.

  22. Plot, and a little more. on War of Honor · · Score: 3, Interesting

For those so inclined, here's a general synopsis of the plot (the series not just this book, but the CD includes the whole series, anyway).
Honor Harrington is a (space) naval officer in the Royal Manticoran Navy. She starts as a captain, later she's an admiral. The situation is a space-age re-writing of European history during the age of classic (water) naval battles. For the guy who mentioned Horatio Hornblower, you hit the nail on the head. Honor proves her own strategic brilliance, courage, honor(pun definitely intended by the original author), loyalty and sense of duty, mostly against overwhleming odds and underskilled opponents. A few skillful opponents are thrown in for proof that she's not just lucky.
Mixed into this action premise is a truly glorious back story of political intrigue and class conflict. The entire series can be taken as a diatribe against the policies of a welfare state if you want, but it's well concealed, and, in general, well thought out. Throw in a healthy spatter of the harsh realities of war and treachery, and mix well.
I had actually thought of doing a review of this novel myself, but I'm glad I was beaten to it. As the author says, the book is worth it, even if only for the CD. I'll add that as a political statement, buying this book/CD combination to try to encourage it in future publications is also worht it, even if you never read a word. But you'll be missing out if you don't.
